There won’t be any state football rankings this week so now is a great time to tell the story of how those weekly rankings started and highlight all the final state rankings we’ve done to this point. Cal-Hi Sports is the most reliable and credible source for California state rankings. We publish a weekly Top 25-50 in five sports and offer rankings by various regions and CIF Divisions. Our rankings will return next week and in the future we’ll do them for as many seasons as humanly possible.

In 1969, Nelson Tennis decided to refuse a job transfer to Los Angeles and began attending football games at Nevada Union of Grass Valley, his alma mater, on a near weekly basis. An intense interest in high school football followed and Nelson soon realized he could apply the detail-oriented, research-driven concepts of chemistry toward the collection of high school football data.

When Nelson’s nephew, Mark Tennis, was himself attending high school in Sacramento in the mid-1970s, he would ask Mark to look up information for him at the California state library. In 1974, Nelson sat at his desk and wrote up a list of the high schools in California history with the longest football winning streaks.

His hobby soon spread to collecting information from other sports and in 1975, with Mark’s help, Nelson was asked by the Sacramento Bee to write up a collection of state football rankings. He did and made up the name, “Cal-Hi Sports,” to go along with those rankings.

There is no need to go into a deeper history on the origins of Cal-Hi Sports. You can find that info by CLICKING HERE. Just know that for over a decade Nelson wasn’t paid a dime for his efforts. Nobody is going to make hundreds of thousands of dollars looking up state records or doing weekly rankings. It makes a living, but Mark and his small team have a passion for it and honor Nelson by making it easy for coaches, fans and players to chronicle California high school sports’ great teams and players.

Instead of trying to rush out a scarecrow version of the weekly rankings or do a feature on an individual, we figured this is a good time to remind our readers they can view all of our previous final rankings over the years in our primary five sports. Check out the links below or simply hover over the tab on the blue navigation bar named “Rankings” and click on the dropdown “Team Rankings.” All of our final state rankings in our five core sports, plus many supplemental ones as well, are listed. We invite you to check them all out.

Keep in mind, we also have exclusive California state records on the website (as drop-downs under the “Record Book” tab) and all-state teams (under the “All-State” tab) available to view and research.

On May 23, 2004, 67-year-old Nelson Tennis died due to complications of bladder cancer. It’s hard to believe he left us over 20 years ago.

In his honor, today we highlight all our archived final state rankings in five sports and other neat supplemental features. We continue to add various honor squads and in recent years, we added retroactive all-state teams in boys basketball and football. This week we’ll announce even more retroactive teams so be on the lookout.
