The online Cal-Hi Sports Record Book & Almanac: Chronicling over 110 years of California high school sports.
As a chemistry major at San Jose State in the mid-1950’s, Nelson Tennis thought his future endeavors revolved around the world of science, but all he seemed to talk about was sports, especially California high school sports.
By the early 1970s, he found himself doing research in a library microfilm room, instead of doing research in a science laboratory! His passion became more than just a hobby and aided by his father Gilbert Tennis and nephew Mark Tennis, Nelson founded Cal-Hi Sports in 1975.
The Tennis’ have used their proven grass-roots research and reporting methods to rank teams since 1975 and name All-State selections in California since 1979. All of these records, rankings, and honor squads are listed in the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book and Almanac, which was last published as a 352-page seventh edition in 2009.
On May 23, 2004, Nelson Tennis died due to complications of bladder cancer. He was 67 years old.
The Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book is Nelson’s vision and life’s work. Basketball state records are now available to view and research online here at CalHiSports.com!
