In addition to Brady Aiken, statewide honors also are going out to Joe DeMers from College Park of Pleasant Hill (juniors), Mickey Moniak of La Costa Canyon (sophs), Tommy Palomera of Chatsworth (frosh), Chris Mathewson of Fontana Kaiser (medium schools) and Nico Hoerner of Oakland Head-Royce (small schools).

Ms. Softball 2014: Johanna Grauer
It’s not a huge shock that the 2012 State Sophomore of the Year and the 2013 State Junior of the Year gets the numero uno position among California prep softball players this season, but nonetheless it wasn’t a slam dunk choice, either.
Mr. Baseball State POY Finalists
This is one of the most impressive groups of elite players to be chosen as finalists for State Player of the Year we’ve ever had and have ever encountered in more than 100 years of research. Five of the nine finalists were chosen among the first 41 in last week’s MLB Draft.
Ms. Softball State POY Finalists
Two of nine that have been chosen among the finalists for this year’s top individual award in California prep softball (an honor that goes back to the 1970s) are from the same team. Four of the nine were absolutely scintillating in last weekend’s CIF Southern Section Division I and Division II finals.
Ms. Basketball 2014: Jordin Canada
The Windward of Los Angeles standout edges runner-up and NorCal’s top candidate, Mariya Moore, to gain state’s highest girls basketball honor. Canada joins all-time state list that goes back to 1972 and includes others such as Cheryl Miller, Lisa Leslie and Diana Taurasi.
More State Girls Players of the Year
We choose honorees for seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen and for each CIF division. Two girls – Katie Lou Samuelson and Sabrina Ionescu – actually both collect two separate honors.
Mr. Basketball 2014: Stanley Johnson
No surprise here, but it is now official as Mater Dei’s four-year standout joins all-time state list that extends back to 1905 and includes others such as Bill Sharman, Paul Silas, Bill Walton, Bill Cartwright, Jason Kidd, Paul Pierce, Tyson Chandler, Kawhi Leonard and Aaron Gordon.
More State Boys Players of the Year
We choose honorees for seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen and for each CIF division. Bishop O’Dowd’s Ivan Rabb actually is on top for two classifications while for the third straight year, the frosh honoree is from the San Fernando Valley.
State Player of the Year Finalists
Several of these boys and girls were in action during Wednesday night’s McDonald’s All-American Games in Chicago. This year’s Mr. Basketball and Ms. Basketball honorees will be announced next week.
