Ms. Basketball State POY Finalists
Just like the boys, it’s also down to six who can be considered finalists for a prestigious honor that lists winners back to 1972. Unlike the boys, though, it’s two seniors making the cut with four juniors. This year’s Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year will be announced on Monday, April 13.
New Honor: State Defensive POY
We are adding a new statewide yearly honor to our parade of them at this time of the year and it will salute the most outstanding defensive player of the year in the state. The first honoree is defensive back Iman “Biggie” Marshall of Long Beach Poly. And since Iman comes from a school that’s […]
Jake Browning: Mr. Football 2014
The Folsom QB turned in arguably the greatest season by any QB in state history, which frankly made it quite difficult to even consider anyone else. He joins the all-time state list that goes back for more than 100 years.
More State Football Players of the Year
Check inside this post for the honorees who have been chosen among juniors, sophomores, medium schools and small schools. One league in the Bay Area has nabbed two of these four player of the year selections.
State Athlete of Year: Nick Nevills
It’s a close call between the three-time CIF heavyweight wrestling champ (who also starred in football) and the electrifying Adoree’ Jackson of Gardena Serra (for football and track), but unfortunately for Jackson we’ll never know how he would have done at his final CIF state track meet.
More State Boys Athletes of Year
Among those earning top state honors are Joe DeMers of College Park, Sean McGrew of St. John Bosco, Drew Anderson from Miramonte of Orinda and Nifae Lealao of Capital Christian. Anderson also gains first-ever State Three-Sport Athlete of the Year selection.
State Girls Athlete of Year: Kyla Ross
Since the prerequisite for this honor is for the athlete to simply attend a California high school (not compete for one of its teams), the all-around silver medalist from last October’s World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and a leader of USA national team becomes too much for any other girl to beat.
More State Girls Athletes of Year
We are doing one change this year and that’s making it a requirement for each divisional state athlete of the year to have competed for their school. Among those earning top state honors are Arianna Washington of Long Beach Poly, Abbey Weitzeil of Saugus and Courtney Corrin of Harvard-Westlake. We also are starting a new […]
Magical night for Aaron Gordon
The 2012 and 2013 Mr. Basketball State Player of the Year goes fourth overall in the NBA Draft to Orlando, but no other players from California were chosen until the second round. We have details plus list of every player from current CCS school who has ever been picked (none ever higher than Gordon this […]
Mr. Baseball 2014: Brady Aiken
Wow, what a close call this year’s selection was for State Player of the Year in baseball. A great group of finalists basically came down to the best pitching prospect in the nation and the best hitting prospect in the nation who both had very strong senior seasons. If we ever did Co-Players of the […]
