All-State Football Nominees (CIFSS)

Here is the second of three lists of players considered as nominees for the various 2023 season all-state football teams. These are all from the CIF Southern Section. This is the 46th consecutive year of Cal-Hi Sports all-state football teams. We welcome additional nominations to be sent in and apologize in advance for missing anyone. This is a very big state we have to cover.

FOR THE FIRST LIST COVERING CIF CENTRAL, L.A. CITY & SAN DIEGO SECTIONS IN SEPARATE POST, CLICK HERE.
THE FIRST LIST FOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA SECTIONS (NOT INCLUDING CENTRAL) ALSO WILL BE IN SEPARATE POST (still to come).

Note: We hope you enjoy this free post on Cal-Hi Sports.com. Cal-Hi Sports All-State Football content that will be for Gold Club members only include second, final list of nominees plus second team, third team overall and All-State Juniors & Sophomores plus list of most outstanding freshmen. The free posts will be first team overall and first team small schools and medium schools. If you also want to check out all of our rankings content, and all state record updates, you can check it out for just $3.99 to cover a one-month subscription. For info, CLICK HERE.

Please send any nomination with each athlete’s height, weight, position, year in school, significant statistics. Comparing a player not on the board yet to one who already is also can be very important toward eventual selection. Limit each nomination to one page please. Send to: markjtennis@gmail.com or text/call (209) 608-1317. Don’t assume we know all there is to know about a player on the list, either. Send us info to make sure all pertinent information is turned in and placed into our files.

All-State teams will be selected separately for sophomores and juniors. There also is an all-state honor roll for freshmen, but it’s not a team. Before the all-state first team overall, second team overall and third team is selected, there also will be separate teams for medium schools and small schools. All of these teams over the years are available to scan at any time for our Gold Club members. CLICK HERE.

Each team is comprised of 30 players — 11 on offense with a kicker and 11 on defense with a punter plus six that we call multi-purpose (allows QBs with rushing yards & those with offense & defense stats to get on). These are not recruiting lists (high school stats are considered) but college commitments are checked and of course can make a difference. For the nomination lists, injuries for a player listed after last season or a transfer can easily be missed. Those will be caught later on in the process or can be fixed for our updated, final list of nominees.

Special thanks for the work done on these nomination lists to Northern California correspondent Daniel Poulter. He’s a great follow on Twitter and did great work for us on our State Stat Star packages this season. Check him out at @DanielJPoulter.

All-State Football Patches for 2023 will again be handled this year by our friends at BillyTees.com. For more info about Cal-Hi Sports merchandise at BillyTees.com, CLICK HERE.

Haven’t looked at any all-league teams yet but will before doing final list and before actually doing any all-state teams.

I know Norcal is not out yet but seeing that they missed a few Socal guys I had to post. Hope they dont overlook that WR Jalen Scroggins from Aragon. He had so many big plays he was Averaging almost 30 yds a catch throughout the year! He was supposed to be a late Serra transfer but missed transfer date. They will wish they had him against Mater Dei this next game

23 nominations you did not mention the best o line in the Central Valley Clovis east Razo brothers. They are more then deserving they are the only players that play two ways in the trac and no one seems to notice. Some bullahit nominees

When you post on these kids make sure you check stats of the area in Northern California. They don’t do accurate nominations for those kids. I’ve seen several not on any All league team and they had better stats that are cited in by coaches groups out there. Be aware. Something sketchy going on with the small schools

We won’t look at all-league teams until later in the process. This is just the first step. Nominations lists will all be updated. Goal this year was simply to get the first run-throughs out before the state championship weekend instead of later as in previous years.

Please consider Angel Serrano for this list as well he led the rio hondo league in tackles this season with 94 tackles even though he missed a game if he would have played that game he would of had over 100 tackles on the season and he also had a 100+ rushing yard game as well

All of the Northern Cal /Small-Medium school All league kids are selected by coaches helping vote each other Guys in. I would check the stats. All league teams mean nothing. Lots of players with stats are being overlooked. Taking away from a ton of deserving kids if you ask me. Hope the way you guys select is based off the hard work these kids put in abs not who you know coach to coach. My nephew was 2nd in the section Rushing and was overlooked be sure these small area politics. Thank you ahead of time.

There’s no politics whatsoever. Read the intro. This is just the first step. Other players can be nominated and considered and will be added to a second list of nominees. We have 1,500 schools to cover and will always miss players on the first run-through.

I know you all work hard to figure your list out but please let me point out an obvious selection that was left out and would look strange if 1 of the best players in SoCal was left out:
    Shaun Torgeson – Senior OT – St.Bonaventure
    Portland State Commit
Part of the 1A State Chamionship runner-up team
    247Sports 3 Star
2x All League, Conference & County
2023 VC Linemen of the year
    2023 L.A. Times All-Star (24 players)

Who nominates these players? I definitely know a well deserved player, good grades, very humble and has showed up both ways, including special teams (Varsity all 4 years) who was overlooked. He actually made a one handed catch against James Logan, and made your Cal-hi play of the week as a sophomore. If the coaches make the nomination then shame on them.

You could have nominated yourself. But if it’s too late, it’s too late. We do the best we can and we know there are going to be some people pissed afterward. It’s the way high school sports has become.
