The 42nd annual Cal-Hi Sports All-State Football Teams may be as late as they can be, but they were always going to be done. This year’s series of teams begins with a look at the best of the best among sophomores. Mater Dei and St. John Bosco are represented by two players, but the school with the best argument that it has the two best is Los Alamitos. Other schools with two are Folsom, Serra (Gardena), Alemany, Oaks Christian, Centennial (Corona) and Apple Valley.

State Sophomore Player of the Year Matayo Uiagalelei from St. John Bosco of Bellflower is joined as an all-state sophomore by Braves’ quarterback Pierce Clarkson. Although Clarkson wasn’t on first team, one would assume if he’s the starter at St. John Bosco for a full season as a senior that he’ll be right up with Matayo as a Mr. Football State Player of the Year candidate. The son of quarterback coaching legend Steve Clarkson (who was at San Jose State when we were beginning Cal-Hi Sports in San Jose in the early 1980s) shared the starting duties with junior Katin Houser this season, which limited his numbers in comparison to some of the others.
