NEW State TOP 25 Girls BB Rankings

The playoffs begin in the CIF Southern Section this weekend and while we want to try and mirror the Open Division seedings in the CIF Southern Section our rankings are not seedings and we use a completely different set of criteria that has less emphasis on some factors the Southern Section and other sections for that matter use in their playoff seeding formulas. Why would anyone change rankings based on anything other than on-the-court results anyway? The one adjustment we will make is we will move the Southern Section Open teams ahead of teams in Division I for now.

Note About Regional Championships: Now that the word has come down from the CIF state office that it will hold Southern Regional playoffs in girls basketball but none in the Northern Region, this year’s race to conclude this hopefully once-in-a-lifetime late spring season is beginning to come into focus. The NorCal regionals aren’t going to be held since the region’s two largest sections, the Sac-Joaquin and North Coast, opted not to have section playoffs. The NCS originally voted it down 43-3, but even after the CIF floated the idea of regional playoffs that would only involve teams coming from section playoffs, sources told us the NCS still didn’t consider a re-vote.

We’re not sure of the particulars of the Sac-Joaquin Section but one top coach from the NCS wanted to know why teams could not be chosen from an at-large selection, and another top coach in the CCS was wondering why they were shut out even though they are having section playoffs. The answers came from a press release by the CIF state office in which Executive Director Ron Nocetti explained that teams seeded for regional playoffs have to come from section playoffs based on the CIF bylaws, and he further stated that there not enough sections in the north having playoffs to seed a Northern Regional bracket.

While teams in the south will have at least a regional title to shoot for, the NorCal teams are not only getting a lot less games than SoCal teams, but other than a league championship there’s nothing else to shoot for.

Another Note: Trying to mix and match with some teams like Bonita Vista playing 23 games and moving on to section and CIF Southern Regional playoffs, while other teams even in Southern California have only played half that many games, and NorCal teams playing even less games, is extremely difficult. However, heading into the CIF Southern Section playoffs, we’ve established this week’s snapshot of where we stand right now. As for newcomers, we had several NorCal teams potentially worthy of a spot, but they have only played under 10 games and most have been in their league, so placing them was difficult, but they still could come in after other ranked teams have concluded the regular season this week. In the end, we brought in one newcomer, the “other” team from Fresno that’s been knocking on the door the past few weeks.
