NEW Girls BB State Top 20

It wasn’t easy for state No. 8 Salesian of Richmond in the NCS D3 final. The Pride had to top another state-ranked foe, Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa. Photo: Willie Eashman.

We do and always have done the Cal-Hi Sports state rankings (more than 35 years) independent to whatever seemingly yearly changing system the CIF uses to do its regional playoff seedings. After seeing some of the placements this time, one can only hope they will get the kinks out of a system that needs fixing. That having been said we were prepared to bring in some new teams and drop some teams out of the State Top 20 based on the Open Division selections and we have this week with Bishop O’Dowd and Mt. Miguel. The 16 Open Division teams are now pretty much locked into the State Top 20 for the rest of the season with a few exceptions, but not necessarily in the top 16 depending upon which team wins the CIF Division I title.
