CIF Central Sec: Segura family values

Here’s some record updates and highlights of top players & teams from the recent week as reported to us from CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett of Fresno. Bob has done phenomenal work on behalf of CIF Central Section schools, athletes and coaches for more than 40 years.

FOOTBALL

Quarterback Alex Aguilar of Shafter had a career night by passing & running in 55-35 win over Arvin. Aguilar passed for 437 yards on 20 of 35 and had four touchdowns and ran for 132 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns for a whopping 569 total yards and seven TDs accounted for in the game. He’s already been named the NorCal Offensive Player of the Week by CalHiSports.com.

Imanol Arredondo of Caruthers also had a career high by rushing for 260 yards on 15 carries and scoring three touchdowns, one going for 93 yards, in a 58-27 win over Farmersville. Quarterback Victor Castrejon led Farmersville by passing for 323 yards on 21 of 35 with three touchdowns passing and one rushing. He did throw four interceptions, however.

David Alcantar of Tulare Western scored five touchdowns in a 44-7 win over Fresno High. Alcantar rushed for 111 yards on 18 carries for four touchdowns and had five receptions for 84 yards and one score.

Senior quarterback Sean Chambersof Kerman has carried the team all season, and last week he rushed for 207 yards on eight carries and scored two touchdowns on runs of 28 & 53 yards in a 64-3 over Dos Palos. Teammate Chris Acosta had a outstanding game as well by scoring four touchdowns on runs 22, 10, 77 & 14 yards.

Erick Segura of Mendota, a three year player on the varsity team, rushed for a game high of 214 yards on 24 carries and scored two touchdowns in a 22-12 win over Minarets. Erick is younger brother of Edgar Segura, a former all-state small schools standout at Mendota who rushed for more than 8,000 yards in his career and scored 137 touchdowns.
