State Football Players of the Week

Two of this week’s honorees are sophomore running back Jacory Coleman of Baldwin Park and senior quarterback Anson Hulme of Saratoga. Photos: bpbravesfootball / Instagram.com & Saratoga Falcon / Facebook.com.

This week’s journey begins at Baldwin Park in the San Gabriel Valley with a record-breaking rushing performance from a sophomore. That’s followed by stops at two schools in Orange County at Dana Point and Fullerton. In the north, after leading off with Los Gatos last week, it’s next for this week at nearby school Saratoga. We end our stops in the north in Stockton at the school near our home office and then at Kerman in the CIF Central Section.

Offensive Player of the Week

Jacory Coleman (Baldwin Park) Soph.

When Jacory exploded for what at first was reported as 450 yards rushing in a 44-34 win last Thursday vs South Hills of West Covina, a question was posed on social media whether it was a record for the San Gabriel Valley. A check of the CIF Southern Section record book didn’t provide the answer since its lists don’t go deep enough, but a check of the Cal-Hi Sports state record lists sure did.

Since that all-time state list includes every reported outing with 415 yards or more, longtime prep editor Fred Robledo of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune could see that Jacory’s total broke the local record of 427 yards set in 2015 by El Monte’s Roy Barajas. A further video check of Coleman’s totals showed him officially with 31 carries for 451 yards and four TDs. The 451-yard total tied the top mark for the Whittier area as well, which was set in 2019 by Whittier High’s Johnathan Arceneaux.

Coleman, who went for a 98-yard TD in the game to just miss tying the state record of 99 yards, had been more of a multi-purpose running back in previous games. He had not even had a 100-yard rushing game before but did have 85 yards and 83 yards with limited carries and he had 18 catches for 250 yards and nine touchdowns. Coleman also had two punt return TDs in one game vs Sierra Vista of Baldwin Park and another punt return TD vs West Covina.

Baldwin Park won its ninth straight game after suffering a rout to La Serna of Whittier in the first game. The Braves, though, didn’t have all of their players eligible yet.

Playing with cast on his right hand/wrist has not prevented Stephen Reda of Dana Hills from being a ball-hawk defender for the Dolphins. Photo: dhhs.football / Instagram.com.

Defensive Player of the Week

Stephen Reda (Dana Hills, Dana Point) Sr.

Reporting in the Orange County Register led us into checking out Reda. In the Dolphins’ 28-10 win last week against Troy of Fullerton, Stephen led the defense with 15 tackles plus he came up with an interception. That interception also was the sixth of the season for him, which is among the state leaders and tied the Dana Hills school record for most interceptions in a season. Plus, Reda had five interceptions last year and now has 12 for his career. That tied another school record.

In looking up more info about him, Reda has been shown in photos from recent games with a cast on his right hand/wrist. That makes the interception totals even more impressive. Stephen had his previous season high of 10 tackles in a close loss to unbeaten Huntington Beac earlier in the Delta League season. He had two interceptions in a 62-7 win on Aug. 28 vs Tesoro of Las Flores. The four-year starter and his teammates are playing Westlake of Westlake Village this week in the CIF Southern Section D4 playoffs. Westlake is the former school of current Dana Hills head coach Tony Henney.

Special Teams/Multi-Purpose Player of the Week

Cyrus Aviles (Fullerton) Sr.

This two-way starter for the Red Hawks (formerly Indians until this season) had a massive outing on offense in last week’s 38-34 victory over St. Margaret’s of San Juan Capistrano, but he also did enough on defense and has done a lot on defense throughout the season so that we were able to make him this week’s SoCal honoree in the multi-purpose category.

Aviles came through with 30 carries for 328 yards and five touchdowns in the win, which enabled Fullerton to complete a 5-0 run in the Kappa League. On defense, he had five tackles and a sack. He already has been named Orange County Register Player of the Week.

For the season, Cyrus has rushed for 1,585 yards and 16 touchdowns. On defense, he has amassed 65 tackles with 10.0 going for losses.

Special Teams/Multi-Purpose Player of the Week

Anson Hulme (Saratoga) Sr.

You can’t get much more multi-purpose than what Hulme did for the Falcons in their 26-22 win last week over Homestead of Cupertino. In a win for Saratoga that caused a three-way tie for first-place in the Peninsula Athletic League Lake Division standings, Anson completed 16 of 28 passes for 200 yards and one TD, rushed 15 times for 160 yards and two TDs and he had 10 tackles with a recovered fumble and a forced fumble while playing defense.

Hulme has been Saratoga’s quarterback since his freshman year. He also has been an all-league player at Saratoga on the basketball court and has been on the varsity volleyball teams since the ninth grade.

Entering this week’s game vs MacDonald of Santa Clara, Anson has 1,614 yards passing and 17 TDs in nine games. He also has 840 yards rushing and 15 more TDs he has accounted for. On defense, he has 57 tackles and six interceptions with one of those interceptions returns for a touchdown.

Offensive Player of the Week

Julian Perez (Lincoln, Stockton) Sr.

The Lincoln faithful have been excited in the last few weeks by some of the totals put up by Perez in the passing game and then last Sunday they saw recent graduate Jonah Coleman score what ended up as the game-winning touchdown for the Denver Broncos in a huge NFL win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

In last Friday’s 51-27 win over Lodi, Julian connected on 19 of 21 passes for 413 yards and four TDs. He added 27 yards rushing on four carries.

Two weeks ago, while it came in a 51-48 loss to Edison of Stockton, Perez set the San Joaquin County and southern Sac-Joaquin Section record for passing yards when he had 614 yards on 30 completions in 57 attempts. Reporter Dylan Ackermann of the Stockton Record covered the game and later confirmed that those totals were correct. Perez’s 614-yard total for one game also will go into the Cal-Hi Sports state records as a tie for ninth and will be No. 2 in section history behind the 689 yards that Jake Browning had for Folsom in his first game as the Bulldogs’ starter as a sophomore in 2010 vs Woodcreek of Roseville.

Perez heads into this week’s regular season finale vs St. Mary’s of Stockton with 2,777 yards passing and 27 TDs for the season. He’s also been the Lincoln full time starter since his sophomore season and has 7,639 yards for his career and 74 TDs. Julian’s yardage total already will be enough for a listing on the all-time state career yardage list.

Defensive Player of the Week

Seth Myers (Kerman) Sr.

It’s not exactly the same name as the longtime NBC talk show host and comedian, but Seth has been been racking up hits of a different sort over the past two seasons for the Lions.

In a 14-6 win last week over Washington Union of Easton, Myers was all over the field from his linebacker position and piled up a season-high 20 tackles. He also had 4.5 tackles for loss with one of those on a sack.

Myers previously had a high of 17 tackles, which came twice in back-to-back wins vs Madera and Central Valley Christian of Visalia. His season total of 131 tackles (with playoff games still to come) ranks among the reported leaders for the CIF Central Section. He also has 30.0 tackles for loss on the season, which is one of the top totals in the state.
