More State Softball Players of the Year
Sophomores nab top honors for medium schools and small schools, but neither of them is the State Sophomore of the Year. Best for juniors and frosh, meanwhile, both go to the East Bay.
Mr. Baseball State POY Finalists
Since we count the CIF Central Section as the north, it’s four from the north and three from the south among those who could be State Player of the Year. One will be named no later than Tuesday, June 25.
Ms. Softball State POY Finalists
Three super sophomores just did too much and are all among this year’s final group of possible State Players of the Year. One will be named no later than Tuesday, June 25.
Mr. Basketball 2013: Aaron Gordon
State’s top honor goes to Archbishop Mitty of San Jose standout for the second consecutive year by a whisker over Mater Dei’s Stanley Johnson. Gordon is only the sixth two-time winner since 1956.
Ms. Basketball 2013: Kelsey Plum
It’s a difficult call between her and Jordin Canada, but the senior guard was impeccable against the toughest teams and in games her squad was unable to win. She’s the second Ms. Basketball from La Jolla Country Day and the fourth from the CIF San Diego Section.
More State Girls BB Players of the Year
Toughest choice other than overall was in Division I where a sophomore edged a senior. Other honorees from Bakersfield, Oakland and Chatsworth. Go inside here as well for best among juniors and freshmen.
Coaches Speak: State’s best raved about both Plum and Canada
As a new aspect to the selection process for Ms. Basketball, several of the state’s most successful coaches agreed to say publicly who they’d vote for. La Jolla Country Day’s biggest rival school also cast a vote.
Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year Finalists
A group of six girls are in line to be selected as the 2013 honoree by Cal-Hi Sports. The Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year list now goes back to 1972 with selected players from earlier years, and includes numerous WNBA superstars.
Mr. Football 2012: Michael Hutchings
Linebacker for the Spartans also turned heads on special teams and made big plays in the last three CIF Open Division state bowl games. He’s the fourth State Player of the Year from the school.
