It was a magical moment to be inside the gym at St. Joseph High in Santa Maria last February when senior Tounde Yessoufou of the Knights was able to become the new all-time career scoring leader for California high school boys hoops.
Most everyone there also were aware, though, that Tounde may not be holding the record for a very long time.
At one point during the post-game celebration after St. Joseph got a win against Weston Ranch of Stockton in a game that Yessoufou scored 29 points (right about at his career average since the 2021-22 season), a phone call came in from previous record holder DeMarcus Nelson, the former Duke star who had 3,462 points during a four-year career at Vallejo and ended in 2004 at Sheldon of Sacramento. Nelson also was featured in a video during the post-game ceremony and there was a plaque with a certificate from Cal-Hi Sports presented to Tounde as the new record holder. He continued to play through the CIF SoCal Open Division playoffs and ended up putting the new record at 3,659 points.
Plans have already been made for a new certificate as current Inglewood High senior Jason Crowe Jr. is more than well on his way to breaking Yessoufou’s record. Jason, who plays for his father Jason Crowe Sr. as head coach, made the switch to Inglewood along with his father as head coach after he played as a freshman and sophomore at Lynwood. He got a great start to become the eventual scoring king with more than 1,000 points in his frosh season and will begin this season with 3,331 career points.
We were there when DeMarcus broke that record in 2004 at the old Arco Arena in Sacramento in a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoff game. Fans wore t-shirts with the new record total emblazoned on it. We were there for Tounde breaking it and we will have something similar for Jason Jr. Yessoufou is now playing at Baylor.
Crowe Jr. scored 1,084 points in 29 games in his sophomore year at Lynwood. Last season at Inglewood the young man who has committed to Missouri for college had 952 points in 27 games. His current career total of 3,331 points already is sixth in state history. He only needs 26 points to break the CIF Southern Section record of 3,356 set in 2019 by Jarod Lucas from Los Altos of Hacienda Heights and then just three more points to move up to No. 3 on the state list, a spot currently held by Darnell Robinson from Emery of Emeryville (1990-1993).

More New Record Book Entries from 2024-25 Season
Timmy Anderson (Blair, Pasadena)
We’re listing Timmy in the record book for now as from Blair (where he played the last three seasons) but for the upcoming season the dynamite point guard will be at Pasadena High. Anderson already is on the all-time state list for career scoring with 2,502 points in three seasons with one more to go.
Alijah Arenas (Chatsworth)
The son of NBA standout Gilbert Arenas reclassified before last season so that it became his senior and final season for the Chancellors after three years. With a senior year this season, he likely would have ended his career No. 2 in state history behind Jason Crowe Jr. Instead, Arenas had 3,002 points in 97 games. He stands currently at No. 14 in state history and No. 1 among players who are from the CIF L.A. City Section. We’re so glad he didn’t suffer more injuries from a car crash he had just a few weeks after his season ended. Alijah is playing this season at USC.

Antranik Balian (Pilibos, Los Angeles)
One of the best outings that Balian had last season was against Chatsworth and Arenas’ team. He had a breakout season that helped him get to 2,940 points for his career. The current player at Pepperdine moved up to 17th on the all-time state list.
Brandon Benjamin (Canyon, Anaheim)
He was the Orange County Player of the Year as a sophomore at Canyon, then went to Mater Dei for one season before coming back to Canyon and finishing up his career with his friends. Benjamin totaled 2,505 points for his three years at Canyon and one at Mater Dei, which was more than enough to get on to the all-time state list. It takes 2,300 career points to be on that list.
Jake Hall (Carlsbad)
The four-year standout for the Lancers who graduated last spring wrapped up his career with 3,106 points in 131 games. He now stands at No. 11 in state history for career points and No. 2 in the CIF San Diego Section. Hall is now playing at New Mexico.
Tyler Harris (Downey)
The senior for the Vikings last season was reported with making 170 of 186 free throws. That’s a 91.0 percent mark and is now No. 3 on the all-time state list.
Chris Jones (Santa Rosa Academy, Menifee)
This senior from last season had a big night with 14 steals in a 87-33 win vs Nuview Bridge Academy of Nuevo. He also had more than 1,000 points during his career.
Nick Khatchikian (Mesrobian, Pico Rivera)
When Nick scored 102 points in a 119-25 win against Waverly of Los Angeles last January, it made news throughout the basketball world. It broke the single game state record of 100 points held by Tigran Gregoryan from the same school. While the point total was eye-opening, so were the details of the game in which Khatchikian set the new record. Waverly had no points in the first quarter. Nick had 40 and it was all of Mesrobian’s points. Waverly also had no points in the first half. Nick already had 79 and Waverly was behind 79-0. Nick’s twin brother Dylan also set a new state record by being credited with 35 assists in the same game.
Johnathan Lupercio (Santa Maria)
He set the state record for most three-pointers in a season as a junior in the 2023-24 season by making 187 of them. Johnathan had 149 as a senior last season for another top 10 total. He ended his career with 411 made threes in 87 games (didn’t have any as a freshman), which is seventh in state history.
Conor Maguire (International, San Francisco)
About three weeks before Maguire led International to the CIF D5 state championship, he sank 14 three-pointers and score 63 points in a 100-55 victory vs Drew of San Francisco. While the 63 points just missed a state record listing by one point, the 14 three-pointers did not.

Devin Moody from Manual Arts had a 64-point game last season and he averaged more than 33. Photo: Benjamin Royer / X.com.
Devin Moody (Manual Arts, Los Angeles)
We added several other 64-point games we found to the all-time state list after Devin had 64 points for the Toilers in a 97-34 victory against Garfield of L.A.
Damyen Tamayo (Coalinga)
The magic number for Damayen to get his name into the book was 17, which is the number of three-pointers he made during an 83-23 win against Firebaugh. Tamayo is now listed in a tie for fourth on the all-time state list and his 17 three-pointers set a new CIF Central Section record.
Cayim White (Inglewood)
Senior teammate of Jason Crowe Jr. got the green light to shoot threes in a 90-51 win early last January over Santa Monica. Cayim made 13 of them and scored 39 points.
Jerren White (Citrus Hill, Perris)
Here’s a junior guard for the upcoming season who has had his name put into the state records. For Jerren, it’s about picking up steals. He averaged 6.2 steals per game last season for a total of 206 in 33 games. That total put him into the book. White had a season high of 12 steals in a loss to Canyon Springs and averaged 10.8 points per game.
Note: A player to watch coming up on the lists for career rebounds and career blocked shots is Class of 2026 center Connor Sheridan of small school Portola (way up in Northern California). Connor starts his senior season with 1,315 career rebounds and 340 career blocks.
