We don’t have all of the byes from last week but it’s still one more week for us doing a scoreboard on the final leg of a 12-day family trip. Thankful that cruise ship internet works well. Big winners of the night were those in the first week of the Trinity League — St. John Bosco, Mater Dei and Santa Margarita — plus NorCal No. 1 De La Salle topping unbeaten San Diego Section powerhouse Cathedral Catholic. Rancho Cucamonga, Chaparral, Folsom & Mission Hills also all won key contests.

Note: We hope you enjoy this free post on CalHiSports.com. The next State TOP 50 Football Rankings will be completed on Monday. We’ll have insights and breakdowns based on 47 years of going to Friday night games with an overview of the state’s top teams and what’s coming up that just can’t be matched. Each new set of rankings will be for Gold Club members only. The late Friday/Weekend Scoreboards will continue to be free posts and will provide snippets of info, comments and more. We will only be doing scoreboards this year on weeks in which we aren’t going to a game.

(Rankings based on previous State Top 50 plus results from last week)
(Through reported results of Friday, Oct. 3)

1. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 6-0
Defeated No. 18 JSerra (SJ Capistrano) 70-21. Carson Clark raced for an 80-yard TD on a short pass from Koa Malauu’ulu in the first quarter that got the rout going.

2. Centennial (Corona) 5-1
Defeated Roosevelt (Eastvale) 62-20 on Thursday night. It was totally appropriate that head coach Matt Logan received a lot of media attention throughout Southern California and through presentations at the game on the occasion of his 300th career win. He became just the 15th in state history to reach the milestone. The last was Simi Valley’s Jim Benkert two years ago. Logan also should move up to 12th on the all-time state list by the end of this season. Robert Garrett from Crenshaw of Los Angeles may get to 300 by the end of this season. It doesn’t look like Modesto Central Catholic’s Roger Canepa will get there until one more season after this one.

3. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 5-1*
Defeated No. 10 Lutheran (Orange) 25-10. The Monarchs were only ahead 10-3 going to the fourth quarter but made the plays down the stretch to create some separation.

4. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 6-0
Defeated No. 25 Serra (Gardena) 30-0. This might not have been a 70-point win like you might see from Bosco or Centennial, but Serra had just 21 yards rushing and no pass completions against the Trailblazers’ defense. Sorry to see the teams didn’t shake hands afterwards. Sorry to see the Sierra Canyon players do a mass fake cramps play and sorry to see some of the Serra coaches overreact to it.

5. Mission Viejo 5-1
Defeated state top 30 Long Beach Poly, 56-7. The Diablos pushed that bad taste of losing a game in Tennessee two weeks ago completely out of their mouths.

6. Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 4-2
Defeated No. 11 Servite (Anaheim), 17-7. The Eagles defense was solid & offense did enough with Trace Johnson TD pass to Jayden Crowder, Deuce Smith TD run and field goal by Tyler Weigand.

7. De La Salle (Concord) 6-0
Defeated No. 9 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 35-14. QB Brayden Knight set up a pair of scores with two long runs and the Spartan defense held down the Dons. DLS is quite, quite likely not going to lose now for the rest of the regular season and through the CIF North Coast Section playoffs. In other words, after this one it’s very good odds the Spartans will be in the CIF Open Division state final once again in December.

8. Lincoln (San Diego) 5-1
Did not play. The Hornets are on a bye this week. They will play their first CIF San Diego Section opponent and start their league schedule next week vs La Jolla.

9. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 5-1
LOST to No. 7 De La Salle (Concord) 35-14. A TD run by Honor Fa’alave-Johnson in the third quarter cut the Spartans’ lead to 28-14, but that was it. We don’t know the details yet, but several players for the Dons went down with injuries.

10. Lutheran (Orange) 3-3
LOST to No. 3 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 25-10. Freshman QB Ezra Brown, younger brother of Mater Dei 2023 Mr. Football State Player of the Year Elijah Brown, threw a TD pass for the Lancers but they were down 25-3 at the time. MD scored twice early in the fourth quarter to break open a 10-3 contest.

11. Servite (Anaheim) 4-2
LOST to No. 6 Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 17-7. Only TD for Friars on 24-yard TD run by QB Kale Murphy that tied the score at 7-7. They were blanked in the second half.

12. Folsom 5-1
Defeated No. 21 Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 28-9. The Bulldogs were in some trouble at halftime, trailing 9-7 on their home field. They ruled the second half, however, and strengthened their grip on the top ranking for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section.

13. Los Alamitos 7-0
Did not play. The Griffins completed the non-league portion of their schedule last week with a win vs Calabasas. They are on a bye this week and actually won’t play again until Oct. 16 vs Huntington Beach Edison in their Alpha League opener.

14. La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) 5-1
LOST to No. 15 Mission Hills (San Marcos) 35-34. There’s a reason we put LCC and Mission Hills right next to other in our rankings and they played right down to the wire. Quinn Roth fired a touchdown pass for the Mavericks with 32 seconds left, but they went for two and were stopped.

15. Mission Hills (San Marcos) 6-0
Defeated No. 14 La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) 35-34. Troy Huhn scored on a QB plunge with 4:34 left for the lead and then the defense had a two-point conversion stop in the final seconds for the win. The win may move up the Grizzlies to No. 2 in next San Diego Section rankings.

16. Archbishop Riordan (San Francisco) 5-0
Defeated Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco) 56-30. Mike Mitchell Jr. passed for 338 yards and four TDs, according to journalist Ethan Kassel. The Crusaders also retained the Stanfel Cup trophy.

17. Damien (La Verne) 5-1
LOST to state top 40 team Rancho Cucamonga 24-22. The Spartans almost rallied for a big win (trailed 24-9 in second half) and scored on a Hail Mary pass by Isaiah Arriaza that made it 24-22. They couldn’t convert on a two-point play, however, that would have tied the score.

18. JSerra (SJ Capistrano) 3-2
LOST to No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 70-21. The onslaught by the Braves on both side of the ball was too much. JSerra is likely going to have a hard time winning a game this season in the Trinity League so its final ranking will be based on how the three teams they beat earlier fare later on.

19. Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) 5-1
Defeated Norco, 55-45. Norco is a team that entered 5-0 and once played Murrieta Valley in a 77-76 game. This game wasn’t that, but it had the earmarks of it in the early going. RB Jeremiah Watson rushed for 254 yards and five TDs, according to Eric-Paul Johnson of the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

20. Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 5-1
LOST to state top 40 team Chaparral (Temecula) 28-20. Bryson Beaver tossed a 35-yard TD pass to Cash Bryant late in the fourth quarter, but the Broncos never got the ball back to try for game-tying score.

21. Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 4-2
LOST to No. 12 Folsom, 28-9. Don’t let the score fool you. Head coach Casey Taylor’s crew had a 9-7 lead against the Bulldogs at halftime.

22. San Juan Hills (SJ Capistrano) 4-2
LOST to Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 33-10. CdM was 5-0 coming in, but most in Orange County did not think this score would come in.

23. Leuzinger (Lawndale) 4-1*
Defeated Inglewood 43-32. Journey Tonga had a 25-yard TD run and two-point conversion with 1:47 left for the clinching points. This marked the first win by the Olympians over Inglewood since 1999 and it is the first league loss for Inglewood since 2018.

24. Pittsburg 4-1
Defeated Los Gatos 30-27. The Pirates would have been No. 24 in the state if we had done a full TOP 50 ranking this week. They won in dramatic fashion vs Los Gatos on a 39-yard field goal with 7:03 left by Luis Rodriguez and then a 43-yard field goal by Rodriguez with 18.9 seconds left. Pitt’s only loss is to No. 16 Riordan, 42-35.

25. Serra (Gardena) 3-3
LOST to No. 4 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 30-0. There was nothing the Cavs could do against the Trailblazers’ offense. They will remain a team to watch for the CIFSS D2 playoffs and could still get a second-place finish in the Mission League.

HOW SOME OTHER TEAMS RANKED FROM
NO. 25 TO NO. 50 TWO WEEKS AGO FARED

30. Manteca 6-0
Defeated Sierra (Manteca) 74-7. This is the team remember that beat Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa 40-7 to start its season.

35. Central East (Fresno) 5-1
Defeated Clovis North (Fresno) 56-13. Anybody out there rank Clovis North at 5-0 ahead of these guys, who had a loss to Grant of Sacramento? It sure wasn’t us.

37. Chaparral (Temecula) 3-3
Defeated No. 20 Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 28-20. Dane Weber tossed a pair of TD passes in the third quarter to break a 14-14 tie and finished with three TD passes and one TD run in the win. The Pumas have done well after 0-2 start with a win over Rancho Cucamonga and a respectable 36-21 loss to Mission Viejo to go now with this win vs Vista Murrieta.

40. Pacifica (Oxnard) 5-0*
Defeated Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 17-13. Big win to start Marmonte League play for the Tritons, who survived what looked like on film a Davon Benjamin 105-yard pick six TD for Oaks Christian.

41. Rancho Cucamonga 2-4
Defeated No. 17 Damien (La Verne) 24-22. This win may end up being the difference in the Cougars winning the Baseline League title. Their losses are to Murrieta Valley (by just two), Orange Lutheran, Chaparral and Corona Centennial.

BUBBLE TEAMS FROM TOP 50 FROM TWO WEEKS AGO MOST LIKELY TO MOVE IN

California (San Ramon) 6-0
Defeated Livermore 44-20. The Grizzlies followed up their big win from the previous week vs McClymonds of Oakland with another strong outing.

Clovis West (Fresno) 5-1
Defeated Clovis East (Clovis) 28-21. Clovis East was No. 45 two weeks ago. Only loss for Golden Eagles has been to Huntington Beach Edison.

Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 6-0
Defeated No. 22 San Juan Hills (SJ Capistrano) 33-10. QB Brady Annett was reported with four TD passes in a statement win for the Sea Kings.
