SINGLE GAME PASSING

The only two QBs from last season to throw for eight or more TDs in one game and gain an all-time state listing were both from the CIF San Diego Section.

One of them, Zach Benitez from Granite Hills of El Cajon, had eight TD passes for the Eagles in their wild and wacky 90-46 victory over Grossmont of El Cajon. Benitez will be in his third year of starting at Granite Hills this season and two years ago was the State Freshman Player of the Year. He also completed 26 of 41 passes in the game for 371 yards, but none of those totals made it into the book. Grossmont’s Thomas Donovan, who had more than one prolific start as a senior, also made the state record book by passing for 515 yards with six TDs in a losing effort.

The other was senior Brodie Stump of San Diego Kearny. Stump had other huge outings for yardage that were much higher, but in a 60-0 win against O’Farrell Charter he had nine touchdown passes. That also set a new CIF San Diego Section record and moved him into a tie for third on the all-time state list. Stump also had 428 yards passing in that game. Brodie’s season high for one game was 481 yards passing with six TDs in a 56-41 win against Canyon Hills.

Junior Alexander Lundsberg from Canyon of Anaheim also had more than one crazy outing and he was on a team that gave up a ton of points and only won three times. The game he had in which he passed 74 times (only one off the state record), completed 43 passes (broke his own school record of 39 set earlier in the season) and had 491 yards (makes the all-time list) came in a 63-35 loss to El Toro. Lundsberg, younger brother of previous record-setting Canyon QB Christian Lundsberg, also had a 487-yard passing outing in a 71-54 loss to Sonora of La Habra.

Another junior making the all-time state single-game list for last season was Bryson Beaver of Vista Murrieta. He had an outing of 25 completions in 39 attempts for 491 yards and five TDs but it came in a 57-55 loss to Murrieta Valley. It turns out that was a glimpse into a great spring for him. Beaver had an impressive workout at the Elite 11 regional tryout in May up in Northern California, which earned him an invite to the prestigious Elite 11 Finals held in June in Manhattan Beach. Bryson recently committed to the University of Oregon.

SINGLE GAME RUSHING & RECEIVING

A quarterback known for rushing the football, David Sandy from Jordan of Los Angeles, had the highest single-game total from last season with 421 yards on 23 carries and he scored five times but it came in a CIF L.A. City Section playoff loss of 58-34 to Arleta High.

While Sandy has graduated, the only other player from last season to rush for enough yards in one game to make it into the state record list was junior Luke Schager of Orland. He broke a 70-year-old school record and almost broke the CIF Northern Section record when he ran for 417 yards on 28 carries and scored four TDs to lead the Trojans past Pierce of Arbuckle, 42-6, in a playoff game.

It takes 18 catches, 285 yards and five TD catches for a receiver to gain a listing in the all-time state records and the only player from last season to hit all five benchmarks in one game was Kolbe Bufardeci of Willits. The senior standout ended with 19 catches for 354 yards and five TDs in a 46-39 win over Clear Lake of Lakeport. QB Corey Rockey also had 470 yards passing in the same game.

Catching five TD passes in one game also is becoming a bit more common. We didn’t have anyone with six from last season, but several had five. In addition to Bufardeci of Willits, Josh Gonzalez of Escondido did it twice (once vs Escondido Charter and once vs. Steele Canyon). Others with five were Drew Washington from Mary Star of San Pedro and Ezelle Buchanan from Mt. Miguel of Spring Valley.

MORE SINGLE GAME RECORD UPDATES

As the career of Jayden Daniels continues to blossom in the NFL, it’s going to be extra special for high school quarterbacks to be able to join him on the all-time state lists for total offense. There were three who did that during the 2024 season for most yards in a game. Madera’s Joel Arellano had the most with 606 yards in a 56-49 win against Kennedy of Delano. Joel had 551 yards passing, 55 rushing and he also kicked eight PATs. Ethan LaSecla, who like Arellano was a senior, had 305 yards rushing and 276 passing for 591 yards in a 48-41 loss to Brentwood of Los Angeles. The third was Seth Shigg of Culver City, who had 307 yards passing and 239 rushing in a 38-25 win vs Capistrano Valley of Mission Viejo in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Two punt returners, meanwhile, going into the book are Jahmir Torres from King-Drew (Los Angeles) and Silas Christiansen from Rancho Bernardo (San Diego). Jahmir, who is now a freshman at the University of New Mexico, tied a state record by returning three punts for TDs in a 42-0 win against Dymally. Silas, a junior who will be back this season for the Broncos, had a 99-yard punt return in a 42-12 win over Fallbrook. It hasn’t been added yet to the state record files, but Silas also had five kickoff return TDs for the season.

WINNING STREAKS, LOSING STREAKS

There were only two CIF state champions from last season that were undefeated, Mater Dei of Santa Ana (13-0) in the Open Division and Carmel (15-0) in D5-AA. It’s therefore quite easy to determine the state’s longest current win streak. MD also won the state title in 2023 and won its last six games. It has a current win streak of 19 games. Carmel lost in its playoff finale from the year before. It’s current win streak would stand at 15 games.

League winning streaks, on the other hand, can be more tricky. De La Salle of Concord officially played three league games last season and won them all to increase its state record league win streak to 114 games. The Spartans haven’t often been in a league but they haven’t lost a league game since 1989. One league win streak that was snapped last season was in the Moore League where Millikan of Long Beach had a 53-40 win over Long Beach Poly and broke the Jackrabbits’ win streak in that league at 81 games.

It’s also much more difficult to determine the state’s longest current losing streaks. It’s not just the losing itself but now there are more and more schools taking forfeits or cancelling their seasons altogether. And forfeits remember have never counted in the Cal-Hi Sports state records. It’s on-the-field results only.

Oroville of the CIF Northern Section has gone 0-10, 0-10, 0-10 and 0-8 for the past four seasons and lost its last three games in the pandemic 2021 spring season for a current 41-game slide. Some may see Workman from City of Industry with a 40-game losing streak, but one of those losses is a forfeit so for us it’s a 39-game streak. We also broke down Keppel of Alhambra with a current 35-game losing and Desert of Edwards at 34. Keppel already has losing streaks of 44, 40 and 37 in its history. Desert actually hasn’t won a game since an 8-man contest in 2018 ironically against an 8-man school that has been wildly successful in recent seasons (California School for the Deaf Riverside). The team then lost its last game of that season, went 0-9 in 2019, didn’t play in 2020-21, went 0-5 in 2021 fall, didn’t play in 2022 and then has been winless in 2023 and 2024. That’s a current 34-game losing streak.

One school that didn’t play last season, Western Sierra Collegiate Academy of Rocklin, will play this year (we think) with a 27-game losing streak. Another school that isn’t playing varsity this season is Lynbrook of San Jose. The Vikings have lost in their last 29 games.

TEAM SCORING RECORDS

Despite a big loss in the CIF D2-A state championship game to Palos Verdes (Palos Verdes Estates), the highest-scoring team in the state last season was Twelve Bridges of Lincoln. The Raging Rhinos scored 709 points in their 14-1 season. Head coach Chris Bean’s squad also averaged 50.1 points per game in the regular season.

All of the other teams that scored enough points to make it on to the all-time state list, which has been led by Folsom with 915 points in 16 games since the 2014 season, all played at least 14 games. Those were St. Vincent de Paul of Petaluma (693 points in 15 games), Carmel (687 points in 15 games), Sonora (657 points in 15 games), Folsom (638 points in 14 games) and Rio Hondo Prep of Arcadia (631 points in 15 games).

The biggest news in scoring state records last season, however, was for a school that couldn’t score at all in one of its games. That was when Escalon suffered a 27-0 loss to Woodland Christian. It broke one of the longest streaks in state history for a team that has scored at least once in a game. Escalon’s last shutout was in the 1998 season. The Cougars were looking to break the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section and NorCal record of scoring in 344 consecutive games set in 2013 by Nevada Union of Grass Valley. They came up short as the shutout loss to Woodland Christian ended their own streak at 332 games.

The two longest current streaks in the state for most consecutive games scoring are held by Mission Viejo at 362 and Corona Centennial at 355. The Diablos’ last shutout was in 1995. The Huskies were last blanked in 1998. Powerhouse St. John Bosco of Bellflower has not been shutout since 2006 and has a current streak of scoring at least once in 223 games. The Braves’ last loss to a shutout came in the 2006 season.
