One of the schools with the best nicknames in the state, the Hollister Haybalers, now have a chance to end a season in their sport of softball with a overall No. 1 state ranking. They move to No. 1 this week after avenging two of their three losses last week and are top seed for the CIF NorCal D1 playoffs. Still very much alive, however, is previous No. 1 St. Francis (Mountain View), which can still win a second straight NorCal D1 title. Pacifica of Garden Grove, meanwhile, should root for one of the other teams to win the NorCal crown. This week’s newcomers include Ponderosa of Shingle Springs and California of San Ramon.
