NEW State TOP 25 Boys BB Rankings

San Marcos players and fans celebrate final regular season record. If the Knights win Wednesday (it won’t be easy vs. Cathedral Catholic), they would be 26-0 and likely facing 29-0 Torrey Pines of San Diego in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division final. Photo: @KnightsSm / Twitter.com.

We have some real change this week with pool play complete in the CIF Southern Section Open Division and the final set between top-ranked Sierra Canyon and No. 3 Centennial of Corona. San Diego Section Open Division favorite Torrey Pines is still sandwiched in between. We have three newcomers this week after some upsets in the lower division Southern Section playoffs with the favorites still rolling in the Central Section, L.A. City Section and Central Coast Section.

Note About CIF Regional Championships: The CIF recently announced the reinstatement of regional championships after the section championships conclude on June 12. That wasn’t unexpected and something we mentioned in our State Top 25 rankings that was likely going to happen. The unexpected part was the regionals will take place in Southern California only. This year, with only two of the six Northern California sections offering playoffs, NorCal will not have regional championships. The CIF SoCal regional championships, which will include the CIF Central Section, will be complete by June 19.

For the second consecutive year, there also will not be any CIF state championships.

Last season, current state No. 1 Sierra Canyon won the SoCal Open Division title, but the very next day the sports world shut down and the CIF state championships were never played. The NorCal Open title game was never played because of a COVID-19-related delay in the regional bracket. So for the second consecutive year, NorCal will not have an on-court regional champion.
