NEW State TOP 25 Boys BB Rankings

Etiwanda’s four seniors are saluted on their senior night. Marcus Green (23) had 37 points in big win over Ribet Academy that resulted in five-spot jump in this week’s State TOP 25 rankings from No. 9 to No. 4 Photo: @EtiwandaB / Twitter.com.

For another week, there is only one new team in the state boys hoops rankings, as the big news is the shakeup at the top because of the results so far in the ultra-competitive CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs. The No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 teams all lost on Friday, but read on to see why none of those results were really a surprise if you’ve been following our rankings since the advent of Open Division section and state playoff brackets eight years ago.

Note About CIF Regional Championships: The CIF recently announced the reinstatement of regional championships after the section championships conclude on June 12. That wasn’t unexpected and something we mentioned in our State Top 25 rankings that was likely going to happen. The unexpected part was the regionals will take place in Southern California only. This year, with only two of the six Northern California sections offering playoffs, NorCal will not have regional championships. The CIF SoCal regional championships, which will include the CIF Central Section, will be complete by June 19.

For the second consecutive year, there also will not be any CIF state championships.

Last season, current state No. 1 Sierra Canyon won the SoCal Open Division title, but the very next day the sports world shut down and the CIF state championships were never played. The NorCal Open title game was never played because of a COVID-19-related delay in the regional bracket. So for the second consecutive year, NorCal will not have an on-court regional champion.
