There are three new teams in this week’s boys basketball State Top 25, one each from the CIF Central, San Diego and Southern Sections. Many teams took a loss last week but a lot of those teams also weren’t at full strength. The rankings also reflect the volatile nature of the season with the backdrop of COVID-19, as there’s been some cancellations and many games where star players are unavailable. It’s caused some tricky movement outside the first four teams, which remain unbeaten.

Note About CIF Regional Championships: In the week prior to the last rankings, the CIF announced the reinstatement of regional championships after the section championships conclude on June 12. That wasn’t unexpected and something we mentioned in our State Top 25 rankings that was likely going to happen. The unexpected part was the regionals will take place in Southern California only. This year, with only two of the six Northern California sections offering playoffs, NorCal will not have regional championships. The CIF SoCal regional championships, which will include the CIF Central Section, will be complete by June 19.
For the second consecutive year, there also will not be any CIF state championships.
Last season, current state No. 1 Sierra Canyon won the SoCal Open Division title, but the very next day the sports world shut down and the CIF state championships were never played. The NorCal Open title game was never played because of a COVID-19-related delay in the regional bracket. So for the second consecutive year, NorCal will not have an on-court regional champion.
