Wednesday, Jan. 9 (Girls)
Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 54, Del Oro (Loomis) 49

This was an important matchup in the Sierra Foothill League from mid-week and saw the Trojans sink four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to overcome the Golden Eagles. Although Oak Ridge lost two days later to Whitney of Rocklin and fell to 13-6, the Trojans notched this key win against the Golden Eagles (who won two days later and improved to 16-3) with a 19-7 advantage in the final period. Sophie Olson connected on two of the four 3-pointers while both Teagan Brown and Erica Ingram canned one each. Olson and Ingram both finished with 13 points. Del Oro, which outscored Oak Ridge 13-6 in the third quarter, was led by sophomore Madison Parry with 18 points. Jenna Duley added 13 points.

Thursday, Jan. 10 (Boys)
Weston Ranch (Stockton) 61, Central Catholic (Modesto) 56

Visiting Central Catholic played very much a team that really didn’t want to see its 23-game Valley Oak League win streak come to an end. Even though Weston Ranch entered as one of the hottest teams in Northern California, up to No. 20 in the Cal-Hi Sports State Top 20 and still riding high from winning the Modesto Christian Holiday Classic, the Raiders battled back from a 48-35 deficit at the end of the third quarter and had the game tied at 56-56 with just over one minute left. Donjae’ Lindsey, who led all scorers with 22 points mainly due to some hot shooting in the second quarter, made a free throw to give the Cougars (16-1) the lead. Their defense then clamped down on the Raiders by forcing a couple of turnovers and more free throws in the final seconds accounted for the final margin. Gavin Wilburn, Weston Ranch’s highly regarded junior, didn’t score in the first half and was 0-for-4 on free throws. He had 11 in the second half and made 5-of-6 free throws. Devin Small also reached double-figures for Weston Ranch with 13 points. Central Catholic (12-7) received a strong outing from sophomore center Myles Clayton, who scored 20 points and gave Weston Ranch trouble on the inside all night long. Guard Justin Traina also hit for 18 points for the Raiders.
