Sac-Joaquin Top 5: Nicknames

We are happy to say that for the sixth straight year the CalHiSports.com web site and Cal-Hi Sports is going to be part of the weekly Final Quarter high school football show on Friday nights on the FOX 40 station in Sacramento.

On last week’s fourth show for the 2018 season, we revealed our list for the Top 5 school nicknames not just for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section but also for the entire state. This was done also to promote a recent series of Twitter polls on our site in which fans were asked to vote for their favorite nicknames. Here is what that countdown revealed:

1. Lincoln Fighting Zebras
We love their logo, we love the person dressed as a Zebra for every game and we love “The Zoo,” which is the student rooting section. Lincoln gets this ranking also because it won two separate polls on the @CalHiSports twitter page so its fans love their mascot quite a bit as well.

2. Vintage Crushers (Napa)
Too bad they’re not in the Sac-Joaquin Section anymore. We ranked the Crushers recently as our favorite nickname in California, but they didn’t get out of the first round in the Twitter polls. It’s a perfect mascot for a school from the Napa Valley.

3. Bakersfield Drillers
Great nickname for great football school that reflects oil industry of Kern County. We’ll see the Drillers next week for their home game against Sierra Canyon.

4. Poly Parrots (Los Angeles)
Polly want a cracker. This is probably the best one from the L.A. City Section, which has a lot of them.

5. Coalinga Horned Toads
We don’t know if this Fresno area school has ever played the Bret Harte Bullfrogs from the Sac-Joaquin Section, but Horned Toads vs. Bullfrogs would sure be fun.

The 30-minute show is twice a long as any other Friday night high school football show in the Sacramento market and is returning to the Friday at 11 p.m. time slot.

Watch this week’s show Friday at 11 p.m. for all the local highlights, plus the next Top 5 from CalHiSports.com, which will be a look at the top five offensive linemen in the SJS. The show will include highlights from all of the biggest games in the region, including the Fan Favorite game of the week (Roseville at Woodcreek). Thanks to host Jim Crandell and the FOX 40 team for once again letting Cal-Hi Sports be part of this year’s show.
