CIF Central Sec: Vball coach 800 wins

Here’s some record updates and highlights of top coaches, players & teams from the past week as reported to us from CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett of Fresno. Bob has done phenomenal work on behalf of CIF Central Section schools, athletes and coaches for more than 40 years.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Congratulations to coach Roy Verduzco of Bullard High (Fresno) in reaching 800 career wins on April 19 against Madera South in a five-set thriller. Coach Verduzco has been coaching boys volleyball for the last 35 years. all at Bullard and has won 29 league championships and seven section titles over that span with a record of 800-201. Note: We checked our files for any coaches in boys volleyball that might have more than 800 wins and couldn’t find one. Mike Cook from Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach had more wins than Verduzco when the last printed state record book was done in 2008, but he stopped coaching the Mustangs’ varsity teams after 2009. Dan Glenn from Newport Harbor (Newport Beach) probably has more than 800 wins for boys and girls volleyball combined since his coaching career began in 1982, but no totals have been reported.

BASEBALL

Bishop Union’s Lorenzo Parra became the 10th player in section history to have 10 RBI in one game. In a 31-1 win over Kern Valley of Lake Isabella back on April 10, Lorenzo also hit for the cycle and went 5-for-6 at the plate with two doubles, one triple, one homer & scored four times.

SOFTBALL

Porterville Monache standout Jessica Castillo set a school record by hitting three home runs, scored five times and had four RBI in a 16-11 win over Kingsburg on Saturday April 21. Teammate Chloe Rivas also had an outstanding game by hitting three doubles and went 3-for-4 at the plate in a 7-2 win over Lemoore. Rivas continued to have a hot bat (4-for-4) with two triples, a double and five RBI in a 16-0 win over Porterville. In the same game, Chloe was the winning pitcher with 15 strikeouts.

Senior Erin Askins, a captain at Tehachapi, set a school record with eight RBI and was perfect at the plate (4-for-4) in a 17-3 win vs. Golden Valley of Bakersfield. She also hit for the cycle with a double, triple & home run.

Kayla Bowen of Fresno Edison hit two home runs and had a game high of six RBI while going 4-for-4 at the plate and was the winning pitcher in a 18-0 over San Joaquin Memorial. Bowen earlier this week was named the Cal-Hi Sports NorCal Player of the Week.

Josie Simas of Hanford West had a career day with six RBI and went 3-for-4 at the plate in a 7-2 win over Lemoore.

Finally, Alexis Russell of Bakersfield Christian had a career high with six RBI and was 3-for-4 at the plate, including a triple, in her team’s 19-0 win over Arvin.

Dear Bob Barnett – I was told that the Bakersfield High School Driller Football Team now has 800 football victories since February 22, 1893 – It was following their 37 – 30 victory over Centennial High School last Friday night, March 26 – Do you know anything about that?

Bob doesn’t count forfeits either and also doesn’t see the comments on our site.
As mentioned before, by our totals, it’s not 800 yet.
