CIF Central Sec: Two milestone weeks

Here’s some record updates and highlights of top coaches, players & teams from the past two weeks as reported to us from CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett of Fresno. Bob has done phenomenal work on behalf of CIF Central Section schools, athletes and coaches for more than 40 years.

BOYS BASKETBALL

California City overtook Centennial of Bakersfield for section 3-point record. Centennial had 341 three-pointers for the season, but Cal City moved to 347 by making nine three-pointers in a 77-68 win over Corcoran in the Division 5 section title game. California City also tied McFarland in 1996 for a section record with 10 100-point games in the semi-finals in a 110-77 win over visiting Sierra of Tollhouse.

Senior Dameane Douglas and sophomore Jalen Green led San Joaquin Memorial of Fresno to the Division 2 section championship. In the semifinals against Redwood of Visalia in a 87-66 win, Green scored a game high of 31 points and Douglas had 19 points. Douglas scored 31 points and Green scored 22 points in a hard fought 71-66 win over Selma in the final.

Congratulations to head coach Tim Hurt of Kerman and his players for winning the first section championship at Kerman since 1955. The Lions defeated Bakersfield Christian 55-49 in the D4 section final.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mission Oak won two playoff games in the CIF Division 3 state bracket and was into the regional semifinals this week. Senior Rhegan Fernandes scored 16 points against Shafter in a 55-45 win. In the second game of the week, she scored a career high of 35 points and made six 3-pointers in a 72-63 win over Carson. Rhegan now has scored 1,699 career points, the third best in school history.

Clovis West and head coach Craig Campbell became the first team to win six consecutive section Championships after a 63-49 win over Clovis North and now has 18 section championships overall. The Golden Eagles were paced by Campbell’s daughter Madison, with 20 points and dead-eye Nikki Tom, who had 19 points.

Senior Ava Galpin from Immanuel of Reedley set a school record by pulling down 30 rebounds, which also tied her for fifth best in section history, and scored 20 points in a 47-44 over host Fresno High in a D3 section semifinal. Ava also scored 26 points and had 18 rebounds in the championship game in a 43-37 win over Golden Valley of Bakersfield.

Congratulations to head coach Rashaan Shehee of Bakersfield High and his players in winning that school’s first-ever section championship. The Drillers edged Mission Oak of Tulare 54-52 in the D2 section final.

BASEBALL

Issac DeLaRos of Caruthers had an early season outstanding game at the plate in a 20-4 win against Strathmore. Issac had six RBI with a homer and double.

SOFTBALL

Anabelle Carroll led Tehachapi to a 11-3 win over Garces of Bakersfield as she had five RBI with three hits, including a homer.

Finally, Raven Moore from Desert of Edwards smacked two home runs and had four RBI for the game in a 11-0 shutout win over Vasquez of Acton.
