It’s a new single-game scoring record for the city of Fresno as Roosevelt’s Bryson Williams rings up a 53-point outing. No wonder the locals are so excited he’s a Fresno State recruit. This week’s other honors have gone to San Jose, Oak Park and Valencia.

Note: For purposes of this feature, we are considering the CIF Central Section to be in the north.

To nominate a player for next week, email markjtennis@gmail.com by Monday at 12 noon and be sure to include a photo that we can use (which means it’s not from the local newspaper or from another web site).

It’s also a great time to sign up for our Gold Club to see all of our great content. The yearly rate has gone up, but you can now see all of our info, including state record book items for $9.99 covering three months. For details, CLICK HERE.

Bryson Williams (Roosevelt, Fresno) Sr.

He’s been averaging more than 30 points per game almost all season but the average continues to climb.

Williams opened last week with a 33 points in a 72-67 losing effort against Sunnyside of Fresno 72-67, but then came back in the second game of the week to set a new Fresno city record when he scored 53 points in a 83-65 victory at home against crosstown rival Fresno High.

According to CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett, Bryson passed a name of the past, Roscoe Pondexter of San Joaquin Memorial, who scored 52 points in 1971 for the previous Fresno city record.

Williams, who has committed to the hometown Fresno State Bulldogs, is averaging 34.3 points per game in 24 games so far this season.

Marisa Mondave (Piedmont Hills, San Jose) Sr.

A guard who played previously at St. Francis of Mountain View, Mondave has sparked the Pirates to a 7-1 record so far in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division after they started 3-7 in nonleague action.

Mondave was not eligible until January due to her transfer and has been an immediate hit. In a 57-53 overtime win last Friday over Branham of San Jose, Mondave connected on six 3-pointers and finished with 41 points.

At St. Francis last season, Mondave was the Lancers’ third-leading scorer. As a sophomore there, she also was the Prep2Prep WCAL Sophomore of the Year.

Riley Battin (Oak Park) Soph.

Making his mark in a big way as a freshmen last season with averages of 21.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, Battin’s numbers have continued to improve.

The 6-foot-8 sophomore power forward is currently averaging 23 points and 14 rebounds a game this season. Named to our All-State Freshmen team, he also moved up in our player rankings as he ended the year as our No. 3 player in our Class of ’18 player rankings for Gold Club members.

After seeing the team’s 11-game winning streak come to an end, Battin made sure a losing streak wouldn’t start when he scored a season-high 42 points and grabbed 17 rebounds during the Eagles’ 67-53 win over Royal of Simi Valley. He also had 27 points and eight rebounds during a 62-49 win over Camarillo.

Kayla Konrad (Valencia) Jr.

After averaging 15.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game last season and being named to our Cal-Hi Sports All-State Sophomore Team, she is having an even better season this year.

Despite the graduation loss of All-Santa Clarita Valley Player of the Year Talia Roth, the Vikings (with Konrad leading the way) are off to an even better start to the season at 17-4. The 6-foot junior forward is averaging 20.3 points and 11.6 rebounds after two big performances last week.

In a 54-46 victory vs. Hart of Newhall, Konrad was dominant with 30 points and 11 rebounds. She then had 23 points, seven rebounds and a season-high seven assists during a 76-42 win over West Ranch of Valencia.
