Forward Stanley Johnson from Mater Dei of Santa Ana scored a team-high 25 points in his second appearance in the Under Armour Elite 24. It wasn’t enough, however, as team Bed Stuy couldn’t overcome large deficit to team Coney Island in 114-109 loss in a game played in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday evening.
Johnson shared team MVP honors with Emmanuel Mudiay, the nation’s top point guard who committed to SMU at halftime of the ESPNU telecast.
Hometown product Isaiah Whitehead from Lincoln of Brooklyn was the game’s high scorer with 26 points for the victors. He and Mudiay brought the crowd to its feet with some fine one-on-one battles that are the staple of New York streetball.
For Johnson, last season’s Cal-Hi Sports State Junior of the Year and unofficial runner-up for Mr. Basketball, his MVP performance capped a spectacular summer where he was also named MVP of the Pangos All-American Camp and shined at other elite camps and showcases.
The other Californian to participate in this year’s Under Armour Elite 24 was Ivan Rabb from Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland. Rabb, last year’s Cal-Hi Sports State Sophomore of the Year, finished with eight points and four rebounds for team Coney Island.
On Sunday morning, Rabb is expected to board a flight back to the San Francisco Bay area and land around 1 p.m. to play in the 2013 NorCal Clash. Associate editor Harold Abend will have a report from the event right here on the Cal-Hi Sports Insider Blog.
