Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard: Santa Margarita topped

Tyler Swortfiguer (left) and Josh McCreath are senior leaders at Ripon, one of the state’s top small school teams, which stayed unbeaten by winning a big game Friday 42-7 at home over Hilmar.

Orange County is the epicenter of this week’s surprises as No. 2 Santa Margarita and No. 7 Tesoro fall. Bellarmine’s OT win over Serra on Saturday is added.

Here is a look at scores through Saturday night, Oct. 13 compiled by assistant editor Paul Muyskens with comments by editor Mark Tennis. Go to our Twitter page @CalHiSports for info on games we have attended. Go to our Facebook page for more updates.

1. DE LA SALLE (CONCORD) 7-0
Defeated Amador Valley (Pleasanton) 52-24. The Spartans will host 6-1 Monte Vista (Danville) next Friday and based on the last two weeks it could be an upset possibility.

2. SANTA MARGARITA (RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA) 6-1
Lost to No. 13 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 24-7. Not having Johnny Stanton at quarterback caught up with the Eagles against Mater Dei’s very strong defense (same one that held Narbonne to 18).

3. VISTA MURRIETA (MURRIETA) 7-0
Defeated Great Oak (Temecula) 65-14. Will it be Broncos or Narbonne moving up to No. 2 next week? Could be a tough call and we welcome comments below.

4. NARBONNE (HARBOR CITY) 7-0
Defeated Banning (Wilmington) 54-7. Narbonne’s case to be No. 2 obviously is that it owns a win over same Mater Dei squad that just beat Santa Margarita.

5. MISSION VIEJO 7-0
Defeated San Clemente 45-7. Coach Bob Johnson’s team appears to be getting better and better each week.

6. ST. BONAVENTURE (VENTURA) 6-1
Did not play. Team should end regular season 9-1.

7. TESORO (RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA) 6-1
Lost to No. 21 El Toro (Lake Forest) 41-31. This result wasn’t that surprising given El Toro’s passing game and that Tesoro has had some close calls.

8. ELK GROVE 7-0
Defeated Grant (Sacramento) 24-0. Grant may now miss the playoffs for the first time in 22 years.

9. CENTENNIAL (CORONA) 6-1
Defeated Norco 38-37. Rigo Luna connected on 30-yard field goal with three seconds remaining.

10. ALEMANY (MISSION HILLS) 7-1
Defeated Bishop Amat (La Puente) 56-37. Alemany still has chance to go unbeaten in Serra League for the third straight season.

11. ST. JOHN BOSCO (BELLFLOWER) 7-0*
Defeated JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 44-41 (OT). Closeness of this score may prevent Braves from moving up in next week’s rankings.

12. UPLAND 7-0
Defeated Glendora 47-26. Solid win for Highlanders.

13. MATER DEI (SANTA ANA) 6-1
Defeated No. 2 Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 24-7. Rollo’s boys topped the Eagles last year, too. This one should jump them into the top five. Even though Stanton played vs. St. Bonaventure and didn’t play vs. MD it will be tough to go against the common opponent factor between those two teams.

14. CHAPARRAL (TEMECULA) 6-1
Defeated Temecula Valley (Temecula) 42-6. Good win for Chappy, but may have to drop in the rankings because the loss to Tesoro now doesn’t look as good.

15. OCEANSIDE 6-1
Defeated Vista 44-0. It went to a running clock for most of the second half.

16. FRANKLIN (ELK GROVE) 7-0
Defeated Davis 72-7. The Wildcats will play Elk Grove next week in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 for the Sacramento area.

17. CRESPI (ENCINO) 7-1
Lost to Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 40-34 (4 OT). These Serra League games are like coin flips, which we sure hope can be avoided this year to decide CIFSS playoff berths.

18. CENTRAL (FRESNO) 6-1
Lost to Clovis 15-12. Given that El Toro (team that Clovis has only loss to) just beat No. 7 Tesoro, this win could put Clovis at No. 1 in the CIF Central Section next week (although unbeaten Clovis North has a case as well).

19. FOLSOM 7-0
Defeated Jesuit (Sacramento) 56-35 on Saturday. Bulldogs aiming for showdown on Nov. 2 vs. Pleasant Grove for league crown.

20. LOMPOC 7-0
Defeated Santa Maria 49-0. State’s longest current win streak stretches to 27 games.

21. EL TORO (LAKE FOREST) 8-0
Defeated No. 7 Tesoro (Rancho SM) 41-31. It may now come down to El Toro vs. Mission Viejo for South Coast League title, but Mission still has to play Tesoro as well as Chargers.

22. BELLARMINE (SAN JOSE) 5-1
Before the Bells played No. 25 Serra (San Mateo) on Saturday we believed that they should not have been ranked behind any other CCS teams until they actually lose to a CCS team. That still hasn’t happened since 2010 after a 35-34 overtime win over the Padres.

23. HART (NEWHALL) 6-1
Defeated Golden Valley (Santa Clarita) 56-14. Since Hart’s loss was to Tesoro, like Chaparral, it may have to drop a spot or two next week.

24. EDISON (HUNTINGTON BEACH) 6-1
Defeated Los Alamitos 24-14. This win probably will end up being the difference in the Chargers winning the Sunset League title.

25. SERRA (SAN MATEO) 5-1
A few weeks ago, the Padres went for a potential game-winning two-point conversion against Buhach Colony and converted. On Saturday, they tried again in overtime against Bellarmine and were denied in a 35-34 loss.
