Former Mater Dei of Santa Ana head coach and current Troy of Fullerton head coach Kevin Kiernan is usually the one chasing state records, but two of them that he has been apart of are likely going to be broken during the 2025-26 season.

Kiernan, who is the state’s all-time winningest head coach with 900 wins to start the current season, is back as the girls coach at Troy after he spent last season in his final year as the athletic director at Mater Dei. He was the girls coach of the Monarchs from 2008 through 2024 and before that was the head coach at Troy from 1997 to 2007.

Starting the season before Kiernan began at Troy in 1997 and continuing long after he left, the Warriors went 22-plus seasons without losing a league game. They broke the previous state record of 195 straight league wins (on-the-court) set in 2015 by St. Mary’s of Stockton and their streak lasted until the 2022 season when it finally ended at 219 games.

To begin this current season, it’s been since 2008 that Long Beach Poly and head coach Carl Buggs have lost in a Moore League game. It’s a current streak of 211 consecutive league wins. Looking at the Jackrabbits’ schedule, they have 12 league games set for this season. They would break Troy’s record of 219 with their ninth straight league win this season, which would be at home against Long Beach Wilson on January 26.

Kiernan’s years at Troy and those of other head coaches at the school, including Roger Anderson, also has led to the Warriors to a total of 29 consecutive league championships. That has been the state record for the last seven years but it was halted in the 2022 season. Lynwood High, under longtime head coach Ellis Barfield, has won 29 straight league titles with a streak that is still going. In some of the years, such as two and three years ago, the Knights had a league loss but they were co-champions and a co-championship has been counted in the record book as a league title. If Lynwood can get another league title this season, it would break Troy’s state record.

Other schools with current league championship streaks that are getting near the top of the all-time state list include Vanden of Fairfield with 25, Etiwanda with 25 and Clovis West of Fresno with 20.

More Team Record Additions/Updates

*There was a 90-65 win last season by Brentwood of Los Angeles over Crossroads of Santa Monica and in that game the two schools went for three-pointers early, often and until the final horn. Brentwood made 24 three-pointers and Crossroads made 21 and both totals are now on the all-time state list. Brentwood’s total of 24 also is now No. 2, trailing only the record total of 27 set in 2010 by Hanford in a 117-31 win vs Mt. Whitney of Visalia. Head coach Charles Solomon has had several teams at Brentwood very good at making threes and last year’s team was his best with a total of 410 in 36 games. That moved to No. 2 on the all-time state list, only behind the record total of 425 set in 2017 in 34 games by Bishop’s of La Jolla.

*Like the updated boys state records, we’ve added a new category listing the schools with the best records in the 2020s (including the pandemic season). It’s a close battle at the top and with the teams you’d think would be the usual suspects. Archbishop Mitty of San Jose is first at 164-15 even though Clovis West of Fresno has more wins (169-16) as does Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth (165-21) and Etiwanda (166-23).

*Clovis West continues to move up the list for teams with the most consecutive CIF section titles. The Golden Eagles won their 13th straight in the CIF Central Section last season under head coach Craig Campbell and with another one this season would break a tie with St. Mary’s of Stockton (13 in a row from 2008 to 2020) for No. 2 on the all-time list. The current record of 16 was set between 1993 and 2008 by Mission Prep of San Luis Obispo.

More New Record Book Entries from 2024-25 Season

Lauren Harris (Faith Christian, Yuba City)
The prolific small school scorer and three-point shooter who has committed to Long Beach State for college has already broken two state records and could get more. Harris’ state records are for career three-pointers and most three-pointers in a season. She reached an amazing 500 for her career to end last season. She eclipsed the previous state record of 486 set in 2022 by Jessica Grant from Mission Hills of San Marcos. Harris got that many for her career by making a state record of 191 last season. She moved past the previous record of 179 set the year before by superstar Kaleena Smith of Ontario Christian. Lauren also begins this season with 2,490 points in her career. The number to watch may be 3,168, which is the Sac-Joaquin Section record set in 2006 by Jacki Gemelos from St. Mary’s of Stockton. The state record of more than 4,000 is out of reach. Harris also gained additional state record listings for most season points (927) and making 12 three-pointers in a game vs Valley Christian of Roseville.

Torrence Harter (Sutter)
She was a shot-blocking and steal-generating big girl from a small school just a few miles to the west of Yuba City where Faith Christian and Lauren Harris play. Harter, a four-year starter for the Huskies, ended her career with 765 blocks, which is now No. 3 in state history, and 728 career steals, which also is fairly high on that list. Another Sutter player already on the list has been Erika Larsen, who had 647 career stealsfrom 2010 to 2013.

Samiah Holley (Rio Vista)
Here’s another returnee for this season along with Faith Christian’s Lauren Harris. Holley is a 5-foot-6 senior guard for the San Joaquin Delta school who is especially adept at getting steals. In fact, she had the most reported steals in the state last season and her total of 267 has been added to the single season state list.

Nyemah King (Lakewood)
We completed multiple state stat star writeups about King for the past four seasons. She capped her career at Lakewood with a career total of 2,640 points. The current freshman at Cal State Fullerton not only has been added to the all-time state list, but she set a record for players from the Moore League (same league as Long Beach Poly, Millikan and more).

Adrya Rajan (Fairmont Prep, Anaheim)
Her sweet shooting from the perimeter should be continuing this season as a senior for one of the top teams in Southern Californa. Rajan gained a state record book listing for making 12 three-pointers in a lopsided victory vs Avalon. She also moved to No. 7 for a single season with 157 made in 34 games.

Kate Schat (Cardinal Newman, Santa Rosa)
Cardinals’ head coach Monica Mertle had a lot of great things to say whenever Kate’s name came up over the last four seasons. She’s now at Santa Clara. The number for Schat that put her into our record book was making 358 three-pointers in her career.

Payton Sugar (Brentwood, Los Angeles)
As mentioned above, Brentwood was a big-time three-point shooting team last season. Sugar led the way as a senior with 134 in 36 games. She also ended her career with 352 over four years and that total also is now in the book.
