State Medium Schools Player of the Year Riley Wickum of Sutter and State Small Schools Player of the Year Natalie Gleason from Capistrano Valley Christian of San Juan Capistrano headline this year’s Cal-Hi Sports All-State Softball Teams for medium and small schools.
Wickum, who led Sutter to a 30-1 season and who has signed with Cal-State Northridge, was on the small schools all-state first team last year. Her team played in the CIF NorCal D3 playoffs this time, however, and also was moved up for other competitive equity reasons. It didn’t matter as she was previously selected as medium schools player of the year. She also was joined on the all-state medium schools first team by teammate Ella Jolley.
Gleason was among the state home run leaders with 18 for a 28-2 team that won the CIF Southern Section D7 title and then lost in the CIF SoCal D5 playoffs. She will play next at Grand Canyon University.
Another team moving up from small schools from 2021 was Marin Catholic of Kentfield. The Wildcats were not moved all the way up to large schools like others that were in the CIF North Coast Section D2 playoffs (Benicia, Livermore) but couldn’t be small any more. Similar to Sutter, however, it didn’t matter as Marin County Player of the Year Rose Malen and speedy outfielder Sammy Horn both earned first team honors. Malen’s big pitching rival in Marin County, Sadie Leonard from Redwood of Larkspur, also is on first team medium schools and for her it’s for the second straight season.
One team that stayed in small schools was East Nicolaus of Nicolaus, which has been in a lower division in the CIF Northern Section than Sutter. The Spartans have two players who are first team small schools — Remmington Hewitt and Meika Lauppe — plus another on second team (Jerzie Brown). Lauppe also already has been all-state underclass.
With the all-state underclass teams already released, some players on medium and small already were placed higher than others among those who were not seniors last season. Another aspect of these teams to consider is that it is not player rankings (which is common in recruiting). There has to be a minimum number of players at each position (examples at least two catchers and at least three outfielders).
Final Note: Other than a few exceptions, schools that were eligible to be in the Cal-Hi Sports Division IV or Division V state rankings are considered small. Most softball teams that were D2 were considered large except for a few. Those that were in Division III and a few that were in D4 are medium. In our system, some schools with large enrollments in lower playoff divisions are just too big to be small schools. There is no all-state large schools team, but there is a third team added to the overall teams in which only players from large schools are eligible.
