NEW State TOP 35 Baseball Rankings

These five seniors have helped the program at San Joaquin Memorial of Fresno (No. 10 in state this week) get to heights that didn’t seem possible with all of those powerhouse Clovis Unified schools close by. Congrats to Zach Fuson, Anthony Giannetta, Josh Castro, Eddie Saldivar and Tanner Sagouspe. Photo: @SJMhardball / Twitter.com.

There were no upsets in the first round of the CIF Southern Section D1 or D2 playoffs, but what might happen later this week in the second round and quarterfinals? Due to that, plus the other CIF section playoffs just getting started this week, the biggest changes in this week’s rankings were from San Joaquin Memorial’s 2-1 series win over Fresno Bullard in a matchup of top 11 teams. Buchanan of Clovis, San Marcos and Archbishop Mitty also all wrapped up top seeds for their major division section playoffs. This week’s highest newcomer is Arcadia with a big move coming from Bishop Amat of La Puente (No. 31 to No. 25).

Note About CIF Regional Playoffs: It was announced recently that the CIF will be hosting a one-week Southern California regional playoff for baseball that will be held from June 19 to June 26. This was the year, remember, that the CIF was going to have both NorCal and SoCal regionals in baseball and then CIF state finals in several divisions. There has not been baseball playoffs in California beyond the CIF section levels since 1922. Even though NorCal regional playoffs aren’t happening, this is still a big deal that SoCal regionals are taking place. We don’t know, of course, which schools will opt out of going on beyond the section playoffs and we don’t know how many players will be skipping out on the rest of this strange, later than usual high school season to concentrate only on other events. As with everything else COVID-19 related, we will just have to wait and see. For the record, the CIF sections that will be advancing teams into the SoCal regional playoffs will be the Southern, San Diego, L.A. City and Central Sections. In normal years in other sports, Central Section teams can be placed by the CIF into either the NorCal or SoCal regional brackets.
