Sac-Joaquin Top 5: FB-Baseball best

We are happy to announce that for the fifth straight year the CalHiSports.com web site and Cal-Hi Sports will be part of the weekly Final Quarter high school football show on Friday nights on the FOX 40 station in Sacramento.

On last week’s show, we revealed our list for the Top 5 players from the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section who played football at a section school but then went on to achieve greatness in baseball. Here is what that countdown revealed:

(These are all guys who went into baseball who also played football in the SJS)
(And this is based on what they’ve done later on)

1. C.C. Sabathia (Vallejo)
State Athlete of the Year for senior year 1997-98 and could be a Hall of Fame pitcher. He was a top pass-rushing defensive end in football.

2. Dusty Baker (Del Campo, Fair Oaks)
Longtime great player in the majors before he became a manager was inaugural member of Sac-Joaquin Section Hall of Fame. When starred at Del Campo as a football running back in late 1960s, he was referred to in articles as John Baker.

3. Jermaine Dye (Will C. Wood, Vacaville)
MVP of 2005 World Series for the Chicago White Sox. You may be hearing about his son who is coming up as a football player at Cathedral Catholic (San Diego).

4. Aaron Judge (Linden)
Hit 52 homers this year, but still a rookie so we’ll leave some room for him to move up on these types of lists for the coming years. He was mainly a TD pass-catching tight end in football.

5. Bill Buckner (Napa)
He wouldn’t want to be reminded of famous World Series moment, but Buckner is still regarded as one of the greatest all-around athletes to ever come from the Napa Valley.

Polls also will once again be conducted on the FOX 40 website for the Papa Murphy’s Fan Favorite Game of the Week. The 30-minute show is twice a long as any other Friday night high school football show in the Sacramento market.

Watch this week’s show Friday at 11 p.m. for all the local highlights, plus the next Top 5 from CalHiSports.com, which will be a look at the top five scoring totals for two teams in one game in section history. The show will include highlights from all of the biggest games in the region, including the Fan Favorite game of the week. Thanks to host Jim Crandell and the FOX 40 team for once again letting Cal-Hi Sports be part of this year’s show.

Regarding Bill Buckner, Napa High did not enter the SJS until 1976

So I guess they should kick him out of the SJS Hall of Fame then. If the SJS itself considers him for such an honor, us putting him on a list is okay too.
