Stone-Cold Defense: 9th Zero In A Row

Yes, we are getting out the state record book and will have to make some changes after Stone Ridge Christian of Merced posts its ninth consecutive shutout win. The team already has tied one state record and has a chance to end with 13.

It began with a 60-0 win over Delta of Clarksburg after two games against bigger schools to start the season, but since then no offense has been able to score (or any TDs of any kind for that matter) against Stone Ridge Christian of Merced.

The Knights of head coach Arthur De Jager blanked their ninth straight opponent last Friday with a 68-0 victory over Millenium of Tracy in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division VII playoffs.
Record Book
It’s the second time that Millenium has been shut out in the streak and the Knights will play another team they’ve blanked in the streak, Big Valley Christian of Modesto, in this week’s SJS D7 championship. After that may come a play-in game for the CIF Northern California regional bowl, then a regional bowl game and then a CIF state bowl game.

During the streak, Stone Ridge Christian has scored 496 points compared to zero for the opposition. The team’s only loss came in its second game 35-28 to Ripon Christian (which just lost to Hilmar in the SJS D6 playoffs) after a season-opening 40-34 triumph in overtime over El Capitan of Merced.

Linebacker Austin Rees, who leads the team with 160 tackles, and defensive end Mark Hooker, who has 23 sacks, have been the two top individuals off of that defense.

Stone Ridge has already tied the state record for most consecutive shutout wins within a season, set in 1928 by Chico. The Knights couldn’t get to the state record for most consecutive shutouts of 15 until next season, but could break the record of most consecutive shutouts within a season set in 1898 by Los Angeles High. The Romans were unscored on in 1898 in 10 games including a 6-0 win over USC and a 0-0 tie with USC.
