It’s another SEC-style night in the CIF Southern Section’s Trinity League as No. 1 St. John Bosco wins 49-44, No. 3 Mater Dei wins 20-17 and No. 17 Santa Margarita wins 42-41. The night’s biggest upset, meanwhile, comes in the CIF Central Section where No. 1 Edison falls to Sanger.

1. ST. JOHN BOSCO (BELLFLOWER) 6-1
In a second half that seemed like another score happened before you could tweet about the last one, the Braves held on to defeat No. 8 JSerra of San Juan Capistrano 49-44 at Orange Coast College. Leading 42-38, Bosco went to a trick play when Sean McGrew took a fake punt and went 70 yards for a touchdown to make it a two-score game with 1:56 remaining. McGrew ended the night with five touchdowns and helped Bosco rally from a 24-14 deficit in the first half.

2. DE LA SALLE (CONCORD) 7-0
Did not play. Spartans have a bye week before facing No. 16 Foothill (Pleasanton) next week.

3. MATER DEI (SANTA ANA) 6-1
Putting together a drive when they needed it the most, Jack Lowary led the Monarchs down the field and Brandon LaMarche ran it in from eight yards out with 1:26 remaining in a 20-17 win over No. 7 Servite.

4. FOLSOM 7-0
Did not play. The Bulldogs have a bye week before facing Rocklin next week.

5. CENTENNIAL (CORONA) 5-2
Junior RB J.J. Taylor had another big night rushing the ball for the Huskies as they defeated Roosevelt of Eastvale 46-10. Centennial faces Santiago of Corona next week with Santiago QB Blake Barnett coming in after a 495-yard night.

6. OCEANSIDE 7-0
According to our source at the game, the Pirates weren’t as sharp on Friday as they normally are but they still did enough for a 42-21 win over Torrey Pines of San Diego. They are clearly the class of the field at this point if you look at teams from outside of the CIFSS Pac-Five Division especially since Fresno Edison is no longer unbeaten.

7. SERVITE (ANAHEIM) 4-3
One defensive stop away from the win over No. 3 Mater Dei of Santa Ana, the Friars gave up the lead with just over a minute remaining and a hobbled Travis Waller tried to lead them back but his Hail Mary as time expired was knocked away in the end zone, giving the Friars a 20-17 loss. All three teams that Servite has lost to remain higher-ranked.

8. JSERRA (SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO) 6-1
The Lions had the lead at halftime and looked like they were going to get the ball back with a chance to drive down and win the game before a fake punt did them in a 49-44 loss to No. 1 St. John Bosco. They still scored late but didn’t get the onside kick.

9. LONG BEACH POLY (LONG BEACH) 7-1
People were turned away at the gate for the sold out game against Lakewood but it wasn’t much a game. Josh Love tied a school record with seven touchdown passes and Iman Marshall was on the receiving end of four of them as the Jackrabbits defeated the Lancers 49-7.

10. GRANT (SACRAMENTO) 7-0
Despite allowing a season-high 29 points, the Pacers outscored Monterey Trail of Elk Grove 40-14 in the second half for the 54-29 road win over the Mustangs.

11. (15) EDISON (FRESNO) 6-1
Not only is the Tigers’ 15-14 loss to Sanger not good for the Tigers but for the rest of the CIF Central Section as well when it comes a potential selection for the CIF DI South Bowl Game. We’ll go into more details about that later next week in our Cal-Hi Sports State Bowl Game Rankings.

12. BAKERSFIELD 6-1
It wasn’t pretty but the Drillers defeated Frontier of Bakersfield 19-7. Curtis Hampton had an interception return for a touchdown with 1:38 remaining to end the Titans’ upset hopes. BHS head coach Paul Golla also won his 100th game.

13. CHINO HILLS 5-2
Trailing by six points midway through the fourth quarter, an attempted fake punt went horribly wrong and along with their struggles to protect their QB the Huskies ended up losing 28-16 to Upland. The Huskies allowed their QB to be sacked nine times on the night. After this result, we won’t feel compelled to rank Chino Hills higher than Bishop Amat anymore due to a head-to-head win and we would have moved up Tesoro as well but Tesoro lost to Mission Viejo.

14. LUTHERAN (ORANGE) 4-3
It might be another restless night for the Lancers after they had a 41-21 lead over No. 17 Santa Margarita after three quarters but ended up losing 42-41 after a 4th down touchdown run with just 18 seconds remaining. They lost last week 28-25 to Servite of Anaheim and it doesn’t get any easier as they will face No. 1 St. John Bosco of Bellflower next.

15. WESTLAKE (WESTLAKE VILLAGE) 5-2
Malik Henry was back at QB for the Warriors and they needed him in a big way. They trailed 27-14 against Newbury Park on Friday night before scoring the game’s final 16 points for the 30-27 win. Kevin Robledo kicked three field goals, including the game-tying and game-winning kicks, to set a new state record for career field goals with 40. According to our own Cal-Hi Sports state record book, the previous state record of 39 was set by Upland’s Jake Van Ginkel from 2007 to 2010.

16. FOOTHILL (PLEASANTON) 7-0
Cal head coach Sonny Dykes and Oregon State’s Mike Riley were there and so were we as Cash Connolly’s 9-yard touchdown run turned out to be the game-winner in a 21-14 triumph over California of San Ramon. Foothill gets De La Salle next. For recap, CLICK HERE.

17. SANTA MARGARITA (RANCHO SM) 5-2
There were several exciting games that came down to the final seconds and the Eagles’ 42-41 win over No. 14 Lutheran of Orange was one of them. Santa Margarita trailed 41-21 after three quarters but K.J. Costello rushed for a touchdown and passed for a score to set the stage for his game-tying touchdown run on 4th down with 18 seconds remaining. Kyle Sweet’s extra point followed for the win. According to tweets, Costello passed for 495 yards.

18. SERRA (GARDENA) 5-2
Did not play. The Cavs have a bye before facing No. 20 Alemany (Mission Hills).

19. NOTRE DAME (SHERMAN OAKS) 5-2
Despite another sensational TD from C.J. Sanders, the Knights lost to No. 22 Crespi (Encino) 56-21. They also led 21-7 in the first half.

20. ALEMANY (MISSION HILLS) 6-1
The Warriors had to hold on for a 24-23 win over Loyola of Los Angeles. They had a 24-10 lead in the fourth quarter before giving up two touchdowns but the Cubs missed the tying extra-point with 2:28 remaining.

21. SERRA (SAN MATEO) 4-2
Head coach Patrick Walsh’s squad trailed 2-0 at halftime in a slugfest on Saturday against St. Francis of Mountain View but scored twice in the second half for a 14-2 win.

22. CRESPI (ENCINO) 6-1
Trailing 21-7, the Celts scored the game’s final 49 points in a shocking 56-21 win over No. 19 Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks. It had our good friend Evan Barnes tweeting “I sure didn’t see this coming.” Scoring on a fake field goal on the final play of the first half to take a 28-21 lead, the game ended with a running clock after Zari Leacock returned an interception 20 yards for the game’s final touchdown.

23. (NR) MILPITAS 6-0
Did not play. The Trojans have a bye this week before facing Wilcox of Santa Clara.

24. (NR) BISHOP AMAT (LA PUENTE) 5-3
According to Fred Robledo’s tweet, @SGVNSports, the Lancers’ 55-22 win over No. 25 Chaminade of West Hills got them a third straight league win for the first time since 2010. Damian Garcia had 272 yards and three touchdowns passing just in the first half.

25. (14) CHAMINADE (WEST HILLS) 5-3
Things were okay after one quarter as the Eagles led 8-7 but they ended up losing to No. 24 Bishop Amat of La Puente 55-22 after being outscored 28-7 in the second quarter.

I know you have been reluctant to put Cathedral in your top 25 due to their embarrassingly bad week 1 game against Folsom, but keep in mind that your #15 team was nearly beaten by a team that Cathedral beat by 2 tds… Maybe Folsom is just that good… IMO there should be three SD teams in your top 25 (Oceanside, Cathedral, and Helix)…

Westlake vs. Newbury Park just happened and will be considered, but Cathedral didn’t play Mater Dei and lose by just one, either. Of course, we’re reluctant to put Cathedral in there due to that one loss. Same goes for Jesuit in the north and others who’ve played and were clobbered by Folsom or De La Salle. Once Cathedral does go in, Helix will be right behind.

Fair enough… but I’m not sure your reference to Jesuit holds any water… they too were annihilated (worse) however the difference is that they have yet to beat anybody… I guess more will be known when Westlake plays Oaks and St. Bonnies

Time to seriously drop three loss teams(regardless of who they lost too).

No way. I think all six teams in the Trinity League are probably better than every team in the Bay Area other than DLS.

Not sure what the Bay Area has to do with continuing to prop a Servite team that is 14-12 under Gass. At some point it is logical to think top 25 teams in CA have to win. You held on to Chaminade waaaay too long too.

Serra gave DLS a much better game than Servite. Serra would fair very well in the TL- they actually play quality defense.

DLS was still using its back-up QB vs. Serra. And Notre Dame (which beat Serra) just got crushed by Crespi. We will continue to reward teams that play the toughest schedules and Servite has played the toughest schedule in the state for the past two years. It’s not like we haven’t seen these teams play, either.

And San Mateo Serra started a SO RB at QB vs DLS.

With your SOS logic, Del Oro should move back into the top 25. They have played a great schedule.

Gardena Serra has not played tough schedules in the past and received high rankings.

If Del Oro beats Granite Bay, why not? Losses to DLS, Folsom, Helix, Kamehameha Hawaii & Rocklin. Four of those teams are going to be in this week’s State 25 and Del Oro has wins over Oak Ridge and Vista Murrieta. Don’t even think Grant has beaten teams as good as both Oak Ridge (win over Vacaville) and Vista Murrieta.
