Week 15 D2 South CIF Bowl Rankings

One of these highly respected head coaches -- John Carroll (Oceanside) or Dave White (Huntington Beach Edison) -- and their supporters are going to be hugely disappointed on Sunday when the CIF announces which teams are going to be chosen to play in the Division II South regional bowl game.

Both John Carroll (Oceanside) and Dave White (Huntington Beach Edison) coached teams this year to section titles.

SUNDAY PICKS ARE IN: Edison gets call in close debate over Oceanside. We have more plus an early prediction for Chargers’ game against Gardena Serra.

Saturday’s regional final at Orange Coast College: Serra (Gardena) vs. Edison (Huntington Beach).
Bowl history: Serra is playing in its third bowl game (won in 2009 State Division III over Marin Catholic, lost in 2010 State Division II to Folsom). Edison is playing in its first-ever bowl game.
Controversial choice? This was one of the most heated debates since the bowl games began in 2006. Depending on how one interpreted the various results, criteria and even personal evaluations after watching both teams play, Oceanside could have just as easily gotten the nod as one of the two teams in this division. Citrus Hill (14-0) also was no doubt a strong team on the board.
Early Prediction: Serra 20, Edison 14. The speed and talent of the Cavaliers will present the toughest test for Edison’s outstanding defense so far this season.

Here are the Week 15 CIF Division II South bowl game rankings (completed before this year’s bowl selections were made; after games of Saturday, Dec. 1; previous rank in parentheses):

Thanks to managing editor Ronnie Flores for taking the initiative to watch Edison and Oceanside in separate games this weekend. He also watched Serra of Gardena in person.

*Indicates section champ, eligible for CIF bowl game.
Drops: Previous No. 8 La Serna (Whittier) lost to Downey 33-25 in CIFSS Southeast Division championship.
Bubble Teams: Cathedral (Los Angeles) 10-3, Foothill (Tustin) 10-3, Helix (La Mesa) 9-2**, Lincoln (San Diego) 9-4*, Olympian (Chula Vista) 11-1, Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley) 10-4, San Fernando 12-2*, Sanger 10-3, Valencia 9-4, West (Torrance) 10-4.
*Season complete and eligible for CIF bowl game. Lincoln won CIF San Diego Section Division III title Saturday by 42-14 over Ramona. San Fernando won CIF L.A. City Section Division II title Saturday by 42-35 over Canoga Park.
**Win by forfeit not included plus season complete, ineligible for bowl game.

Note about this division: Previous No. 1 South Chaminade of West Hills lost to Serra of Gardena 30-28 in the CIF Southern Section Western Division championship game. This result means this division will be closely scrutinized between three deserving section champions: Serra, CIF Southern Section Southwest Division champ Edison of Huntington Beach and CIF San Diego Section Division II champ Oceanside . This means all three teams, which we’ve have seen all in person, require an in-depth analysis.

Case for Serra: The Cavaliers not only defeated Chaminade to avenge a loss to the Eagles in a Mission League contest, Serra also defeated an unbeaten Lompoc 34-21 in its semifinal contest. Lompoc went into that game with the state’s longest winning streak at the time — 32 games — and Serra beat the Braves convincingly. It’s safe to say Serra’s victory over Lompoc was the most impressive semifinal playoff win among the three teams being seriously considered in this division.

It’s not just Serra’s last two victories that makes the Cavs such a strong pick, either, it’s the overall body of work. When Long Beach Poly won the CIF Southern Section’s Pac-Five Division — the section’s premier championship — it turned into a feather in the cap for Serra since the Cavaliers beat Poly, 20-12, in their second game of the season. Serra’s season-opening 26-23 victory over Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks was also a quality win since that team advanced to the Pac-Five quarterfinals. Serra, unlike Edison and Oceanside, does have a second loss: a 22-9 setback against CIF L.A. City Section champ Narbonne of Harbor City in its fifth game. Considering Narbonne won its section title with a 14-0 record and is SoCal’s consensus top-ranked team it’s easy to conclude Serra played the toughest schedule of the three contenders in this division. There is also previous precedent that a two-loss team has no trouble getting selected provided it played a strong schedule.

Serra has now won three CIF Southern Section titles in the last four seasons and appeared in four section title games in five years. It has played and beaten some of the state’s best teams in that time frame and is 1-1 in state bowl games, winning in Division III in 2009 and losing in Division II in 2010. Those two bowl-bound teams were led by fantastic players such as Heisman Trophy candidate Marqise Lee and fellow USC wide receiver Robert Woods. It’s hard to say if any of this year’s players can become as good as that duo, but the talent level is the same as when that group played at the school.

All-purpose back Adoree Jackson is a big-time player and coach Scott Altenberg also has two quality running backs in Marques Rodgers and sophomore Malik Roberson. Serra’s defense is talented, too, with players such as junior linebacker Dwight Williams.

Considering all the above-mentioned factors (strength of schedule, quality wins, quality of players and previous performances), Serra isn’t likely to be left out of a regional bowl game.

Case for Edison: The Chargers won their first section title under veteran coach Dave White with a 28-10 victory over Villa Park. It was the Chargers’ second victory over Villa Park after beating that team in their second game 27-7. A strong point for Edison is Villa Park didn’t lose to another team all season long and the Spartans beat a previously unbeaten Tustin team in their semifinal playoff game.

As the season wore on, Edison’s victories over teams such as San Clemente (5-5) and traditional Pac-Five power Servite of Anaheim (3-7) lost some luster, but Edison has been on a roll since its only loss to Pac-Five runner-up Mater Dei of Santa Ana. Edison trailed Mater Dei, 20-0, before rallying to lose by six points and opposite of some of its wins, the Edison-Mater Dei score became more significant as the season wore on. Edison would have loved to seen Mater Dei defeat Long Beach Poly on Saturday night, but its only loss being to the Pac-Five runner-up makes for a strong resume. It’s also against a better opponent than Oceanside lost to (read below) and Edison does have one less loss than Serra.

Speaking of the Pac-Five, Edison was previously in that division and when the Chargers were moved to the Southwest Division, the Chargers did not lose to any team from that division and showed just how dominant they could be against those teams, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Edison’s defense, led by players such as linebacker Donald Rice and sure-handed cornerbacks Kiante Goudeau and Jeremy Maxwell, had two safeties in the Southwest Division championship game alone. Oceanside and Serra have more potent offenses than Edison, but in recent years (2006, 2009) Edison advanced to Pac-Five title games and this year’s defense is just as good as the ones on those clubs were.

With its performances this season and track record, Edison is a solid choice for one of the two spots in this division.

Case for Oceanside: Similar to Edison, Oceanside beat a strong foe (in this case Poway) for a second time in its respective section title game whereas Serra avenged a loss. Poway has previously won San Diego Section titles in Division I, so when Oceanside dominated the Titans 32-10 after beating them 23-13 in the first meeting, it left no question that the Pirates are the best team in San Diego and deserving of a bowl bid.

Looking at the Pirates’ overall schedule, it’s wasn’t as strong as Serra’s, but it was quite similar to Edison’s. In fact, both teams squeaked by its playoff semifinal foes. When you point to a signature win, Oceanside clearly has that, even more so than Edison, with its 34-14 win over Oakdale in the first game of the season. The Pirates led the eventual Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champions 34-0 at halftime. Oceanside’s 34-14 victory over Oakdale was that NorCal team’s only loss.

Now let’s talk about Oceanside’s only loss. It was a 40-30 setback to Chaparral of Temecula, a team that lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Inland Division playoffs and finished 7-4. Chaparral was highly-regarded in the preseason and whether or not it underachieved or simply was not that good, it doesn’t matter because the result hurts Oceanside regardless. In our rankings system, the loss to 12-2 Mater Dei hurts Edison less than Oceanside’s loss to 7-4 Chaparral. Of the four losses suffered by the three top contenders in this division, Chaparral would clearly be the lowest ranked team of the quartet.

With this year’s section title under its belt, Oceanside has won eight CIF San Diego Section titles in various divisions in the last nine years. The only time the Pirates didn’t win in that time span in 2011, they lost to Helix of La Mesa in the championship game and that team went on to win the Division II CIF Bowl Game. Under head coach John Carroll, the Pirates have won 12 section championships since 1995. That’s awfully impressive.

Two of Carroll’s teams went to CIF Bowl Games in Division I and Division II and won both games. This year’s team is quite similar to those bowl-winning teams with a balanced offense led by a stellar quarterback and a big offensive line. Isreal Paopao started two years ago on Oceanside’s section title-winning team and he was impressive in this year’s title tilt against Poway, displaying a strong arm and the ability to elude tackles as a runner. Oceanside has explosive offensive players on the outside and when the team needs to convert short yardage situations, fullback William Gulley is as good as they come. Oceanside has a lot of two-way players, but there is no drop off on either side of the ball.

If the CIF Commissioners simply go by the criteria of won-loss record and who teams lost to with the same amount of losses (remember Oceanside had a first-round playoff bye that’s why they are 12-1 and not 13-1) when casting their votes in this division, Edison is the logical choice. If the commissioners place more emphasis on Oceanside’s win over Oakdale and how strong it has been since the advent of the CIF Bowl Games in 2006, Oceanside’s chances to be selected in this division increase.

Note on Serra, Edison and Oceanside: For these three teams we mentioned some of the strengths and weaknesses of their player personnel for comparatives. We saw all three teams play and even minor points might make a difference in which two teams eventually get selected.

Special Mention: 14-0 Citrus Hill of Perris defeated 13-1 Serrano of Phelan 38-24 in the CIF Southern Section Eastern Division championship game. The Hawks had a terrific season under head coach Eric Zomalt, a former all-state player at Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley, but the all-important strength of schedule criteria simply doesn’t allow for them to be mentioned as serious contenders above Serra, Edison and Oceanside.

I respect the ranking and just wish someone would give Citrus a chance, for a small school that is only limited to neighborhood kids, they are a tremendous collection of talent and are scared to go up against anybody…I just wish this particular format was in place last year when Rancho Verde won the their title because that team was for real.

@Garrett, I agree with you. Oceanside also is a public school and all their players are kids that live in the neighborhood. They do not recruit, nor have all the benifits that Chaminade, Serra, or Mater Dei etc. etc. have. They do have a great Pop Warner program in Oceanside and it starts at that level, along with passionate support from the community.

Good job on winning another title PIRATES!! That’s all we do is win championships.
It seems like chaminade was a bust from the get go. All that talk about this and that amounted to nothing.
Let’s hope the commissioners make it an O’side vs edison regional. I would like to see O’side put those O.C./L.A. doubters to rest. Critics attack our schedule and our section but they for sure don’t want to play us. Two lose teams should have no business in a regional. But according to this website O’side has no chance. I sure hope they give us that spot. Once again Good job PIRATES!! Consistency at its best.

Great job Oceanside, the coach, the team, and the San Diego community! I said in earlier post that i would be the first to congratulate them…this coming from a former player and fan of Edison. It’s a hard job for the selection committee today…all three teams are more then deserving to continue there season…we will see what happens!

This an excellent analysis, especially coming so quickly after the section championships. No argument about Serra. One thing you didn’t mention is that I think it’s fair to say the SDS D2 playoffs and Avacado West League were both tougher than the SS D6(Southwest) playoffs and Sunset League this year. Given the 12-1 and 13-1 records of Oceanside and Edison respectively, I would think the team that won the tougher playoff would get the nod.
    A side note:
For the most part, it’s my opinion SS is well run. However, dumping the Sunset five divisions down was not a smart move on the part of SS (There certainly was a lot of legitimate squawking from the other Southwest leagues and teams). Instead, replacing the Golden League with that league in the Northern Division would have been a good fit.
Perhaps it will be poetic justice that the commissioners will favor Oceanside on this basis.

  4. Posted December 2, 2012 at 8:28 am | Permalink

Hopefully SS will move Citrus Hill into either the Sunkist or Sunbelt Leagues in the Central Division for next year. They’ve been an anomoly in the Mountain Pass League for several years. Actually, the Hawks would have been very competitive in the Citrus Belt and Inland Division this season.

history has shown us that a two loss team belongs because two loss teams have won the state bowl game.Serra will be a slight favorite against either O-side or Edison.to me i think the pirates will get the invite because of who they are and what they have done in previous bowl games and if i were a pirate fan i would want Serra for the exact same reason.Serra has the track record of bowl games and so do the pirates so that seems like the game everyone should want to see.

Oceanside looked very very good last night against a big, well coached, and good team. Tofi Paopao may be the best QB to play at Oceanside (Jordan Wynn, Derek Shaw, Se Poumele etal) ? Their defense was fast and physical and they play very precisioned and well coached football in all aspects.

Oakdale whom Oceanside beat won their Section Championship, hopefully that is an important element for voting today. Granted, they are a smaller school, yet, they were ranked 1 for D-II at begining of season and now are ranked 2nd.

I find it interesting that it was noted that both Edison and Oceanside were watched this weekend and yet Edison is still ranked ahead of them…. Anyone watching both teams play clearly knows that Oceanside is better… btw the idea that Edison has a better defense than Oside is highly debatable… Oceanside would not have given up a point in the D6 playoffs… real talk…

@osde, to state that Edison’s defense is hands down the best is Calhi trying to justify the number 2 ranking. Oceanside’s defense is just as good or better; not only represented in the scores, but in speed and the sheer violence and physical nature of their team.

Message sent loud and clear to our kids. Losing is better than winning. Especially if that loss is to a “highly regarded” team. No wonder the rest of the country views California as soft. We celebrate losing here. Coach Carroll, schedule Mater Dei, LB Poly, Servite, and Edison next year and lose to all of them!! That seems to be the winning formula here.

It sure wouldn’t hurt foy Oceanside to schedule more quality Southern Section Teams from OC or LA

      • Posted December 5, 2012 at 4:03 pm | Permalink

Oceanside actually does try to schedule many CIFSS teams, including Servite, Mission Viejo. LB Poly and others over the years. The problem is you can’t always predict when some team you schedule is going to be good and then actually play that one team for that one season. Another problem with scheduling like that is that both schools need to agree to travel to the other. We can predict with some certainty that Serra is going to be ridiculously good next year so if you want to play a quality CIFSS team that’s a good place to start.

They probably wanted to give Edison a shot, even though the blngster tries to make them out to be something they are not (and haven’t been for some time) they do have tradition and it’s cool to see them get their shot… A Serra vs. Oside game would have been fun to watch tho… could have been some good story lines too with each team having a couple of SBG games under their belts…

Those 63 year old men on the CIF panel are looking at their watches, thinking about their stock portfolio and Sadie at the local…………… They could careless about who goes in. That is life. We focus on what is important to us, and what uplifts our lives. To put Edison in is a way to go home early all based upon the metaphoric SEC hype of the SS via riding on the loss of Mater Dei.

Nobody is 63 and three of the commissioners are women. Newest commissioner is Russell White, the former Crespi and Cal star who is the new guy from the Oakland Section. If Oceanside got in and Edison didnt, the Edison people would be just as upset. That’s the type of decision it was.

Serra vs Chaminade was utter garbage slop football. They took football back to the 30’s with the terrible play calling and non-thinking, no special team having high level city slop football. I have never seen such terrible coaching and non awareness of terrible coachin than this game. They masquerade this bad football in speed. Newby was running sweeps with no blocking. The ” Emperors Clothing ” story, i.e no one acknowldeges he has no clothing, as no one acknowleges that Serra plays bad football disguised in ” speed ” and SS hype !

I would LOVE to play Serra!! I watched every minute of their “football” game with Chamifraud!! I have literlly seen better pop warner games. That game set the sport back 40 years. Lousy quarterbacks, no blocking, no kicking game to speak of. Last time I checked special teams are one third of football. Serras special teams were special alright, short yellow bus type special. All that was missing in that game was leather helmets. I kept waiting for Red Grange to run on the field. Don’t even get me started on the coaching!! Must be hard to maintain the playbook when all the plays are drawn up in the sand in the huddle. That was glorified sandlot football!! Their are D3 and D4 teams in the San Diego area with no more that 28 players on the team that play more sound football then what I saw that night. Sorry teams down here like Sweetwater and Castle Park would hang with if not beat Serra. Don’t get me wrong, i’m not trying to hype up the SD area. Those are two of the weakest schools down here. They look like friggin Notre Dame compared to what I saw with Serra on friday. You can have your paper championship that a bunch of L.A. honks voted for. Good luck with Edison, believe me you will need it. They play football there, not the sandlot, running-a-muk “football” that Serra plays.

Just checked the cif website and O’side was not selected. We just got hijacked and was overlooked by a two lose team. The reasoning will never be justified until a real playoff system is instituted. Obviously who you lose to and how far that team that you lost advances in playoffs is gold. (overlooking the two loses) Lesson here is to stay undefeated or at least two loses.

the San Diego section is like the Los Angeles city section, the top 3 or 4 teams can play with anyone but as a whole is not very strong.Oceanside should do what the top L.A. city section teams do and play the toughest non leauge teams out there so when you run the table like Narbonne has your in without a second thought instead of geting dissed because you lost to a team that wasnt very good.

Guys, stop making Oside fans look bad, I’m one, and I saw this was coming mainly because of Chaps weak ending to the year. A win or two in the playoffs would have helped a lot. I am upset, and I do think Ed is in for a loss (probably just bias talking) I have not seen Ed or Serra play but from what I’ve been reading all season, they’ve been good enough to get there. Let it be and look to next year. Great year Pirates!

If Oakdale ends up being the norcal bow div 2 representative and competes and plays whomever is the socal representative close or an upset than CIF selected the wrong SoCal team. I believe Serra beats Edison by 21 pts and then beats Oakdale by 28 pts. If Edison pulls a miracle and beats Serra than Oakdale will beat Edison 21-14. This is just a prediction, but I just bought a $1 lotto ticket and won $5 so I am on to something…just sayin. Congrats to all Socal and NorCal teams for winning their section and becoming CIF Section Champs.

@Tennis, Do you think CIF might go to a 4 team regional game because of the closeness of Div 2 and just to weed out politics and voting deciding who gets to play? This is what we have and it is better than what we didn’t have prior to 2006, but a little more tweaking might be needed.

    • Posted December 3, 2012 at 9:08 am | Permalink

I don’t think there will be a 4-team playoff because there has never been a 17-game season for teams not just in California but anywhere in the nation. I do think there could be more divisions, however. Texas, Florida and Illinois all have more divisions than California. Adding another division probably wouldn’t have helped Oceanside in this situation but for some smaller schools like Wasco and Nordhoff it sure would.

On the cal preps website, their proposed state tournament seems like a logical and sound system. Everyone gets a chance to prove themselves, even the undefeated teams with a so-called “weak schedule” can show what they’re about. But with cal hi sports holding a monopoly in Cali. HS football it’s obvious why they would oppose it. Maybe there’s a lot of money to be made but kept in the hands of a few. Who really knows, but that’s one way to have a true state champ.

    • Posted December 3, 2012 at 6:46 pm | Permalink

Why would we be against any state playoff? It’s the sections, not us, that would be against it. And trust me, there’s no monopoly and no money involved. The CIF doesn’t pay us a penny. And last I checked all of the content we’re putting up on this blog is free.

Tennis i can live with who selected but what does out look like when an oakdale team goes out and wins the whole thing say or do to this boys down here in the south, my hope is cif picked the right teams also what is the criteria for the open division and why couldn’t they have bumped up an oside into either Open or division one like they played few years ago

    • Posted December 4, 2012 at 8:57 am | Permalink

The Open Division can be teams from any division, but almost every year north and south the two will be from Division I. The selection criteria is the same. If for example Serra had beaten Narbonne earlier and was unbeaten they could have been in the Open Division. Oceanside was way down the list for Open Division due to having a loss to Chaparral. Teams can’t move up from D2 to D1 or in any other division. I think the reason Oceanside was D1 when it played Bellarmine is because the CIF used enrollments at the beginning of the bowl games to determine which bowl game divisions each school would be in. It’s now based on which section playoff each school is in so that all San Diego D2 playoff teams would be considered D2 South (with only the winner getting bowl eligible).

Cathedral in LA is one of the teams that got beat by 60 plus points each by Serra and Chaminade ? Oceanside currently has 13 players playing NCAA D1 football. To have one player going to the corrupt SEC (the college version of the SS section) is not worthy to base the quality of your team. I watched Serra and Chaminade play, and it was poorly coached and sloppy football. Chaminade ran sweeps all night without correct blocking for Newby. Serra played city ghetto no precision football. Rankings are always going to be subjective. Only when everyone agrees, do we “feel” that they are objective. For D2, if the focus is only on how good the team is that you lost to, then Edison and Serra are properly placed. What happens when you look at quality wins. Here’s Oceanside’s record against opponents that were in the bowl rankings at some point in the season. In parentheses is the highest ranking and division that the team reached. I know someone’s going to say the rankings at the end are the only ones that matter. I agree, but on the other hand, you must be doing something right to be ranked at some point.
    Wins: Oakdale (#1 D2 N), La Costa Canyon (#10 D2 S), Poway twice (#9 D2 S), Mission Hills (#15 D1 S). Loss: Chaparral (#12 D1 S).
So that’s five wins against ranked opponents. Just another way to look at things. I’m not going to take the time to look up the quality of Edison’s or Serra’s wins, but I’m guessing if they can compete, then someone will do the work to make the counterpoint. I’ll consider silence that their wins were weaker. I honestly don’t know, so someone please enlighten us.

    • Posted December 5, 2012 at 6:00 pm | Permalink

there can be no argument against Serra, with four wins against teams that where at one time or another top 30 in the state(LBPoly, sherman oaks Norte Dame,Chaminade,Lompoc).Edison on the other hand has really only beaten Villa park(twice) and Foothill Santa Ana.I guess the selection commitee judged both teams only loss and losing to pac 5 finalist Mater Dei by 6 was judged better than losing to chapperal.

CUT THE B.S. The FACT is that Max Preps paid a FEE to C.I.F. for the RIGHTS to determining the rankins. According to Mark Cohen the marketing director of CIF it is a “long term deal” (exact words). C.I.F. HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CALIFORNIA DEPT OF EDUCATION. It is a seperate entity that has been entitled to decide hs athletics since it was founded as a seperate “watch dog” by a group of hs principals from LA in 1914. THESE PEOPLE MAKE BIG BANK!!! The tax returns are public information and they list the salaries, expenses and income. California is the ONLY, ONLY, ONLY state that does not have a state football playoff. THE ONLY ONE. After the CIF section championships we have a “selection” committee who are handed the final say (Max Preps) on who gets to participate in a BOWL championship series. THATS A FACT FOLKS. IT’S LAUGHABLE AND PATHETIC. Cal HI had a disclaimer posted on their site at the for a long time saying that they were probably going to fold after this season! Then they posted that they were “saved”!!! Gee, I wonder how that happened? Mark Tennis: what makes you ANY type of “authority” on football? Seriously guy? Where have you coached? Where did you play? HOW did you get to become such an “authority” on California High School Football? Another question Mark Tennis: is this site including yourself paid by C.I.F., Max Preps or any other entity to provide “rankings” services of any sort ot type? Answer up guy. You seem to believe you have all the answers every other time you open your mouth.

    • Posted December 6, 2012 at 2:28 pm | Permalink

You are completely wrong. We never had a disclaimer on our site about going to fold. That was CalPreps. And actually for this season, I have been paid nothing by no one to run this particular blog. I am actually doing it out of my own pocket just to keep things going after myself, Ronnie Flores and others were let go by ESPN in September when ESPN discontinued its entire high school operation. This may even become a hobby site in a few months. Just don’t know right now. What makes me an authority? Seven state record books edited and published in 30 years, running a national high school magazine for 11 years. Compiling rankings in five sports every week for 35 years. You are correct to complain about California not having a state championship, but what you say are “facts” are just flat out, 100 percent wrong.

I only agree that I never played. It’s your opinion that I therefore can’t be an authority. I already laid out specifically what you are wrong about, that we (meaning Cal-Hi Sports) never posted a story we are going out of business. The CIF also does not, never has, paid a service such as ours to make selections or do rankings for them. And it’s not “Mark” Cohen of the CIF. You have his name wrong. Also, I have never played Fantasy Football. And if you knew how many years we spent going to the library looking up state records in every CIF sport you wouldn’t be dissing our work so easily. There are 80,000 to 100,000 names in the California state record book and we compiled them all. If that makes me a “Fantasy Football Geek” whatever. Your posts also have had to be edited for vulgarity (which the Serra people don’t know about). Keep it up and you will be gone from this board in about 10 seconds.

Serra has more D1 palyers in college right now over the last 5-years than any other school in CA. A majority of the kids go in and play right away. I don’t know where you get this Jungle and/or street football stuff, but the game was a defensive battle between 2 very good teams. It is easy to sit back and criticize coaches, but you do not know what goes into game planning and play calling and what the QB’s are checking off. You had 2 teams with very good coaching staffs. Serra has only lost 8 games in the 6-years. All from a school that has 300 boys. To say that Oside would smash on Chaminade and Serra is assinine.

Oh? Serra has mor DI players than “any other school in CA”? Humm? Well, here are the 20 that Oceanside hasput into DI over that time frame. Thats an average of 4 per season. Considering we suit up 40 players year in and year out, with the starters playing both ways for the most part, and considering that there are (2) grades at OHS which play varsity with more players in the JR class by a bit yr in and yr out, that be about 15 SR’s and 25 JR’s. Thats a pretty good average…PLUS those that also go play DII and JUCO we average about 50% of our graduating SR’s yr in and yr out going on to college……Eduardo Middleton, Wash St c/o 2012

LOL!!!!! You people just have NO CLUE what BIG TIME physical football is. NONE. PRIVATE SCHOOL BOUGHT THEIR WAY INTO SOMETHING THAT THEY DIDN’T EARN! TYPICAL.

Serra just kicked the crap out of Edison.

Serra would do the same to Oside.

Chaminade would do the same to both also.

Serra/Chaminade was the D2 state game only we got it twice. ; )

Serra is the best out of the 4. Nade a close second and Edison and Oside can pound sand.

SERRA was getting kicked in the teeth for half the game! Your version of “kicking the crap” is halarious! Edison and SERRA are both SECOND rate teams. They, like Chaminade BOUGHT Their way in. Everyone knows it.When the private schools from SS go play real schoolsback east they get the crapbeaten out of them and run back to Calito beat up the other soft, skinney little kids in their respecitve confrences in the SS. Coaches in NJ, PA, OH, TX, FL and every other state that produces better HS players laugh at Cali and the politics it employees to “select” who gets to play.

@Tennis, Thanks for the response about the commissioners watching the games. It makes sense that they would be involved in their own section championships but wouldn’t it make sense that those in charge of choosing the teams have actually seen each eligible team? Even if it is just film? I know it would take time to get through the games but it seems that it is the least they could do considering they are responsible for selecting the teams they feel will best represent their regions. Anyway, on to next year. I’m just glad to see Oside back on top where they belong.

Considering they are essentially only losing Gulley (MLB/RB) and PaoPao (QB) how high do you see Oside starting in the state rankings for 2013? Those two will be tough to replace for sure…This is kind of the same position Oside was in after the 2008 year when all the wrs, most of the oline and defense returned but not the prestigious QB. They found a QB in Quentis Clark and went undefeated and on to the D1 state title… On a side note, The little bros of a few of the standouts on that 2009 team will be 3 year starters and D1 recruits this up coming season.

    • Posted December 6, 2012 at 2:38 pm | Permalink

I agree that the section commissioners should watch the teams they are choosing. I’d get some former coaches together, have them form the selection committee and you’d assume they’d watch games either on film or in person. Thinking it could be retired, respected types like Wayne Schneider from the Sac-Joaquin Section, Ed Buller in the CCS, Dick Bruich in the CIFSS and Ed Burke or Gil Warren (just said he was retiring) from San Diego. As for next year, we usually wait to see which teams are scheduling each other, how certain players look at the Nike camps/combines and then try to talk to locals (like Steve Brand, John Maffei in SD) to see what they think before we start putting together our own preseason state rankings. Transfers also can be important.

If Serra has bad coaching and sloppy play then maybe all teams should look into “ghetto ball” since they beat 4 top 30 teams in the state this year.their loss to the number 2 team in the state was a tough close game 22-9.come on O-side every ignorant comment you guys make is easily refuted with facts.show the same class that your boys have shown all year.everyone who follows high school football knows what Oceanside brings year in and year out and the great program they are and frankly all the crying about being passed over is really a black eye on your city and school.

If anyone plays “ghetto ball” it’s O’side. Lol! It’s perfectly nested in between 2 of the most notorious hoods in O’side. 2 totally different worlds, Serra’s a private school and O’side’s a public school. 90% of our rosters year in and year out are riddled with kids born and raised in O’side. Nearly every single one of rhose kids grew up going to O’side games and dreaming of one day being a Pirate. Junior Seau RIP, came out of the Eastside in the O, so I guess he played ghetto ball. O’side seems to have done a pretty good job of getting kids out as a public school, as has Serra apparently. Pretty impressive between the 2 schools, over 50 kids in NCAA right now?? Wow, that’s impressive!

You know, some of you have forgotten that high school football is about THE KIDS. We all want to win but we should strive to win or lose with CLASS. I am an Oside fan and have always been proud of the way Coach Carrol teaches our players to represent their school, team and families with class and humility. I don’t think he would be pleased to hear the way people are just going at each other in such a vicious manner. We won our section and I am so proud of our boys. We didn’t get a regional bid. Sucks for us, but you know what? I support having regional games because at least you have a chance to fight your way to the State Bowl game. Relax everyone, it’s ok. Our boys will be fine. I wish Serra & Oakdale the best. Going to State is an amazing time and they earned it. If we had been invited then Serra or Edison would have been bummed. That’s life. You win some you lose some. I look forward to seeing who we can schedule to play next year. Would love to play a great team at the Battle for the Veterans at Camp Pendleton (a great cause). We will show them on the field next year. Hope to go undefeated because our core team is still going to be strong and then maybe we can go to State next year. And please….don’t call out other schools players and what they are, or are not, doing in college. We should all just be happy football has helped to get so many of ALL of our kids an education. As for Mr. Tennis thank you for even hosting this site, especially since you don’t have to. Let’s keep it positive and be good role models for our kids. And if you’re wondering…yes I do have my own the team.

For 99% of us it is on to the 2013 season! We have what we have in the regional and bowl championship games. I would of liked to see Oceanside selected but we all knew that it was 3 teams vying for 2 spots and Oceanside wasn’t selected and that is the way it goes! Football and every other sport has changed the lives of so many student athletes and to have adults bash them on a blog is a shame. If a student athlete is blessed enough to have the talent to receive a athletic scholarship that is an accomplishment all in itself.

As for all the rankings, the only rankings I have trusted and followed in the past 5 years is this one. There are so many rankings that are computer generated or not. The time and effort that this staff does to try to get it right must be applauded. Sending people to watch games live and give feedback is pretty cool for high school sports…And now to do this out of the love for high school sports should also be applauded. Hopefully Mr. Tennis and staff will continue to do this next year and years to come. Maybe some other company can pick this up. Hopefully if schedules allow Oceanside can play other Div 2 teams from the SS next year…Go Oakdale!
