Week 14: SoCal CIF Bowl Rankings

Senior quarterback Christian Rossi has had the hot hand for Clovis North in the CIF Central Section Division I playoffs. He and his team will go for their first D1 crown Friday against Central of Fresno.

Big changes in D2 South with Chaminade taking over at No. 1. Other new No. 1 is Ontario Christian, but it’s not favored in its section final. With one week to go before CIF selects teams, we have projections and scenarios for every division.

Open Division: The top 10 teams that would be ranked by CalHiSports.com for the CIF Open Division in Southern California would be:

1. Narbonne (Harbor City); 2. Vista Murrieta (Murrieta); 3. Mater Dei (Santa Ana); 4. Centennial (Corona); 5. Crenshaw (Los Angeles); 6. St. Bonaventure (Ventura); 7. Chaminade (West Hills); 8. Serra (Gardena); 9. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach); 10. Edison (Huntington Beach).

With assistance from Harold Abend and Paul Muyskens, here are the Week 14 rankings for each of Southern California’s CIF bowl game divisions (previous ranking in parentheses; after games of Saturday, Nov. 24):

DIVISION I SOUTH
1. (1) Narbonne (Harbor City) 13-0
2. (2) Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 13-0
3. (5) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 11-2
4. (6) Centennial (Corona) 12-1
5. (8) Crenshaw (Los Angeles) 11-1**
6. (4) St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 11-2*
7. (9) Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 10-3
8. (3) St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 12-1***
9. (10) Mission Viejo 11-1*
10. (11) Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 9-3*
11. (7) Upland 12-1*
12. (12) Alemany (Mission Hills) 9-3*
13. (13) Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 8-4*
14. (14) Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 8-3*
15. (15) Clovis North (Clovis) 11-1
*Indicates season complete and ineligible for CIF bowl game.
**Does not include default win.
*** Does not include forfeit losses plus season complete, ineligible for bowl game.
Drops: None.
Bubble Teams: Bishop Amat (La Puente) 7-3-1*, Central (Fresno) 11-2, Clovis 9-2*, Chaparral (Temecula) 7-4*, Charter Oak (Covina) 10-2*, Crespi (Encino) 8-2*, Eastlake (Chula Vista) 9-3, Edison (Fresno) 9-4*, El Toro (Lake Forest) 9-2*, Mission Hills (San Marcos) 10-2, Moorpark 8-3*, Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) 10-2*, Rancho Cucamonga 10-3*, Tesoro (Rancho Santa Margarita) 7-4*, Westlake (Westlake Village) 6-5*.
*Indicates season complete.
No. 1 Team Result: Narbonne defeated Carson 39-12 in CIF L.A. City Section Division I semifinals.
Cal-Hi Sports Projected Bowl Game Matchups: Narbonne vs. Vista Murrieta for Open Division; CIFSS Pac-Five winner (Mater Dei or Long Beach Poly) vs. Clovis North (favorite in CIF Central Section Division I final) for Division I.
If Narbonne or Vista Murrieta lose in their section final: Mater Dei could then come up and take one of the Open Division slots if it were to beat Long Beach Poly in the Pac-Five final. This is because both Centennial of Corona (loss to St. Bonaventure) and Crenshaw (loss to Westlake) have lost to Pac-Five opponents. If Narbonne loses to Crenshaw and Mater Dei wins, however, Crenshaw can point to the common opponent criteria since Narbonne has a win over the Monarchs.
If Narbonne or Vista Murrieta lose and Long Beach Poly wins: In this situation, it doesn’t look like the Jackrabbits can come up into the Open Division. Their overall resume would probably put them behind either Crenshaw or Corona Centennial.
If Clovis North loses in its section final: Mission Hills of San Diego (if it beats Eastlake of Chula Vista in San Diego D1 final) then would seem to be in a stronger position than Central of Fresno to grab the final SoCal Division I bid.
Don’t be stunned if: A 12-2 team from Mater Dei gets voted into the Open Division ahead of a 14-0 Vista Murrieta. Last year, it was mentioned by CIFSS officials that Santa Margarita (which was 12-2) was chosen in front of Vista Murrieta for a bowl game not because of Vista Murrieta’s five forfeit losses (team was 14-0 on the field) but due to Santa Margarita’s strength of schedule.

DIVISION II SOUTH
1. (3) Chaminade (West Hills) 12-1
2. (5) Serra (Gardena) 11-2
3. (2) Edison (Huntington Beach) 12-1
4. (1) Oceanside 11-1
5. (7) Citrus Hill (Perris) 13-0
6. (8) Serrano (Phelan) 13-0
7. (NR) Villa Park 12-1
8. (10) La Serna (Whittier) 12-1
9. (15) Poway 10-2
10. (4) Lompoc 12-1*
11. (13) Garces (Bakersfield) 11-1
12. (6) Tustin 12-1*
13. (14) Palos Verdes (PV Estates) 10-3
14. (11) Carter (Rialto) 12-1*
15. (NR) Kaiser (Fontana) 12-1
*Indicates season complete, ineligible for CIF bowl game.
Drops: Previous No. 9 Helix (La Mesa) lost to Poway 21-7; No. 12 Olympian (Chula Vista) lost to Lincoln (San Diego) 20-7.
Bubble Teams: Cathedral (Los Angeles) 10-3*, Downey 10-3, Foothill (Tustin) 10-3*, Helix (La Mesa) 9-2**, Lincoln (San Diego) 8-4, Olympian (Chula Vista) 11-1*, Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley) 10-3, Sanger 10-2, Valencia 9-4*, West (Torrance) 10-3.
*Season complete, ineligible for CIF bowl game.
**Win by forfeit not included plus season complete, ineligible for bowl game.
No. 1 Result: Chaminade defeated Cathedral (Los Angeles) 45-7 in CIF Southern Section Western Division semifinals.
Cal-Hi Sports Projected Bowl Game Matchup: CIF Western Division champion (Chaminade or Serra of Gardena) vs. Edison of Huntington Beach (if it beats Villa Park for CIF Southwest Division title).
If Edison loses to Villa Park: Although the Spartans would then have a win over the only team they’ve lost to, they wouldn’t seem to have a strong enough resume to win in a vote over Oceanside (if the Pirates win against Poway in the CIF San Diego Section D2 final).
If either 13-0 Citrus Hill or 13-0 Serrano win by a large margin in their game: That would be a surprise in the CIFSS Eastern Division final, but if it’s Serrano and Paraclete (which has lost only to Serrano) also wins in the CIFSS Mid-Valley Division then the Diamondbacks would have to get consideration at 14-0. They’d still probably need Oceanside and Edison to lose, though, for serious consideration.
Don’t be stunned if: Oceanside gets voted in over Edison even if both teams win out. It seems as though the voting CIF section commissioners can be swayed by familiarity with certain teams getting onto the board over and over again. If it’s between those two teams for the second spot opposite the Chaminade-Serra winner, it’s going to be a good debate.

DIVISION III SOUTH
1. (1) Paraclete (Lancaster) 12-1
2. (2) St. Augustine (San Diego) 10-2*
3. (3) Monrovia 11-2
4. (4) Wasco 12-0
5. (5) Madison (San Diego) 11-1
6. (NR) North (Torrance) 11-2
7. (6) Nordhoff (Ojai) 12-1
8. (NR) Rim of the World (Lake Arrowhead) 11-2
9. (NR) Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 10-3*
10. (NR) Garden Grove 11-2
*Forfeit win not included.
Drops: Previous No. 7 Laguna Beach lost to Garden Grove 35-21; No. 8 San Dimas lost to Paraclete (Lancaster) 28-20; No. 9 Mission Oak (Tulare) lost to Bakersfield Christian 7-0; No. 10 Brawley lost to Madison (San Diego) 35-18.
Bubble Teams: Banning 11-2*, Brawley 10-2*, Jurupa Hills (Fontana) 8-4*, Laguna Beach 11-1-1*, Mission Oak (Tulare) 9-3*, San Dimas 11-2*, San Marino 10-2**, Salesian (Los Angeles) 11-2*, Valley Center 7-5*.
*Indicates season complete and ineligible for CIF bowl game.
**Indicates forfeit loss not included plus season complete, ineligible for bowl game.
No. 1 Team Result: Paraclete defeated San Dimas 28-20 in CIF Southern Section Mid-Valley Division semifinals.
Cal-Hi Sports Projected Bowl Game Matchup: CIF Southern Section Mid-Valley Division winner (Paraclete or Monrovia) vs. CIF San Diego Section Division IV winner (St. Augustine or Madison).
If Wasco wins in its section final 49-0: That would happen to be the same score by which the Tigers beat Bakersfield Christian (their opponent this week) earlier in the season. The team’s lack of a quality opponent for the entire season may end up costing it a bowl bid.
Don’t be stunned if: Wasco gets a bid regardless of its schedule. The team could end up being the only other CIF Central Section team besides Clovis North to get a bowl game and it also would be the only unbeaten team on the board for this division.
Why These Rankings: Paraclete’s lone loss is to Serrano of Phelan and that would look even better if Serrano ended 14-0 and Paraclete gets a win over Monrovia. Monrovia has lost by just one point to larger school Ayala of Chino Hills and by three to larger school South Hills and has wins over San Dimas, San Marino and defending D4 state champ Sierra Canyon. St. Augustine’s two on-field losses were to Cathedral Catholic (later changed to forfeit win) and larger school Otay Ranch. The Saints also have a win over San Diego Lincoln (which just knocked off unbeaten Otay Ranch in SD D3 playoffs). As for Madison, which is the same team last lost to Escalon in the D3 state bowl game in 2010, its only loss is to Valhalla of El Cajon (which just lost by 31-28 to Oceanside). That’s why we think Madison can get a berth with a win over St. Augustine.

DIVISION IV SOUTH
1. (3) Ontario Christian 13-0
2. (1) Bishop Diego (Santa Barbara) 12-1*
3. (2) Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 11-2*
4. (4) Mission Prep (San Luis Obispo) 11-1
5. (5) Rio Hondo Prep (Arcadia) 11-1
6. (6) Santa Fe Christian (Solana Beach) 9-3
7. (7) Francis Parker (San Diego) 8-4
8. (10) Bakersfield Christian 10-2
9. (NR) St. Margaret’s (SJ Capistrano) 10-2*
10. (8) Horizon (San Diego) 8-4*
*Indicates season complete, ineligible for CIF bowl game.
Drops: Previous No. 9 Christian (El Cajon) lost to Francis Parker 27-24.
Bubble Teams: Boron 10-2*, Calipatria 9-3*, Christian (El Cajon) 8-4*, Flintridge Prep (La Canada) 6-5*, La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla) 7-4*, Windward (Los Angeles) 5-4*.
*Indicates season complete, ineligible for bowl game.
*Win by forfeit not included
No. 1 Team Result: Ontario Christian defeated Jurupa Hills (Fontana) 34-33 in overtime in CIF Southern Section East Valley Division semifinals.
Cal-Hi Sports Projected Bowl Game Matchup: Ontario Christian (if it were to win CIFSS East Valley title) vs. CIFSS Northeast Division champion (Mission Prep or Rio Hondo Prep).
If Ontario Christian loses in its section final: Although the Knights are 13-0, it does look like they’re going to be the underdogs to D3 South ranked Rim of the World in its last game. Rim is led by Jacob Taylor, the state’s leading rusher, and is coming in after a 69-20 romp past Banning (a team the Fighting Scots lost to earlier). Rim wouldn’t be D4 for the bowl games due to its enrollment and a loss by Ontario Christian would open it up for other D4 enrollment schools.
If Santa Fe Christian loses in its section final: With Bishop Diego (has win over Mission Prep) and defending D4 state champ Sierra Canyon already knocked out from bowl eligibility, the next team in line would be the CIF San Diego Section D5 champion. Santa Fe Christian already has a 35-17 win over Parker and would need to beat the Lancers again. If Parker wins and Ontario Christian loses, it would then simply move up to take SFC’s spot because at that point the list of eligible teams is down to a precious few.

Years ago I hung on the coat tails of 1 player, and consequently acquired 6 pieces of jewelry. I have heard that a team called Edison is/has been hanging on the coat tails of some team called Mater Dei for their success ? However, I have the copyright on “coat tail hangin.” Since I have the copyrights to “coat tail hangin”, Edison may be infringing copyright laws@ ?

Look i am an Edison grad and i am so proud of the Chargers just like i am sure people who went to Oceanside and in the San Diego area are very proud of them….lets let these games they have to play this weekend play themselves out….they face two good teams! I am prepared that this will be Edison’s last game but you should (the Oceanside, San Diego) be too….just sayin

It’s gonna be a tough pill to swallow for Bishop Diego if Mission Prep & Santa Fe Christian reach the Regional Bowl. Bishop beat both. CIF made it nearly impossible for Bishop to reach a bowl game. Red Bird had to play 4 road play-off games in a row (Mission Prep game was basically a play-off game). The good news for the Cards is the team is mostly underclassmen.

Just when I thought the BCS didnt make any sense, these new rankings come out. How does Oceanside win and drop 3 spots?? Are you kidding me? A team that has lost twice is now in the drivers seat? Even Edison wins and drops a spot. Im no math genius, but last time I checked 1 is less than 2! Who is Serra, the new LSU? Get beat twice and still go to the bowl. So much for the incentive to win. Why not jump Palo Verdes up 5 spots, they have 3 losses! Dont give me that nonsense about “who” they lost to. They lost TWICE!!! If Serra wins the state championship then we will have not one but TWO teams that can brag they beat them. Talk about a paper champion. Even the best of teams will have a hiccup and lose one game, that happens at every level. But come on, two losses. Politics have now made its way down to the high school level. This new system was suppose to eliminate the confusion and make the state bowl team clear cut. Instead, just like the BCS, bias and politics are ruling the roost. The message being sent to the kids at Oceanside and Edison is dont win. Lose twice, then you have a shot. I say, lets put Servite in the mix. If 2 losses is better than 1, then 7 losses has to be even better!!

There is no rhyme/reason to what Tennis does.
His rules are arbitrary and are not even consistent (he does not apply the same rules to every team).

A team should not drop when they are winning,a win is a win and its the playoffs and semifinals at that i.e Oceanside they haven’t lost a game since week two and even then they played without players, but they drop and there winning what a joke if you go off strength of schedule there’s is alot tougher than Edison by far remember Oceanside also beat an Oakdale team who is probably in running for a state bid as well

What is the perfect senario for Wasco to get in? They’ve dominated everybody they’ve played scored 63 on a good Chowchilla team in the semi’s. Only undefeated in the southern section in D3 and outscored opponent 659 to 129.

From what I am seeing, Wasco should have lost twice. That is the formula for Serra in D2. Wascos biggest mistake was going undefeated. Two losses seems to be what they need.

This is also a response to your previous post. As the results have come in during the last few weeks, Serra has been able to build a very strong case for itself while Oceanside has not. This is no fault of Oceanside’s players, just the way it goes. If you look at it now, Serra vs. Oceanside isn’t even close. Oceanside’s best wins are against Oakdale, Mission Hills, Poway with a loss to Chaparral, a CIFSS team that was solid early but ended up not getting out of the first round in its division. Serra’s best wins are against Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, Long Beach Poly (now playing in the CIFSS Pac-Five final) and Lompoc (had state’s longest winning streak) with losses to Narbonne (No. 2 in the state, top 10 in the nation) and Chaminade (a loss it can avenge with a win this weekend). Oceanside vs. Edison is a different story. We believe at this point that if both teams win then Edison is going to have the better case because the voters in the room on Sunday will look at the two teams’ losses (Edison’s to Mater Dei and Oceanside’s to Chaparral). But it’s going to be a good debate and probably a close vote. Oceanside certainly might get the nod and good for them if they do.

Wasco’s best shot I think is if Monrovia wins against Paraclete. We would still have Monrovia higher than Wasco due to strength of schedule, but Monrovia does have two losses compared to Paraclete with one (and Paraclete’s could end up being to a 14-0 team from a higher division).

Ok, Im throwing out all common sense and making by Region bowl picks based on what I reading from this site. Side note, all of these teams have what appears the be the manditory 2 losses: D1 Mater Dei vs Long Beach Poly. LB Poly has the “magicial” 3rd loss so I could bypass them. D2 Serra vs Palos Verdes. Palos Verdes also benefits from that 3rd loss. D3 Monrovia vs North. Easy pick here, both teams have 2 losses. D4 Bakersfield Christian vs Santa Fe Christian. Just could not over look Santa Fe Christian and those 3 losses. I know, I know, there are plenty of team that are undefeated or have only one loss. But until you get that second loss, your just not in the hunt. Just ask Serra.

Agreed, a two loss team in a bowl game loses all credibility with me. Regardless if the opponents they lost to are in section finals. You might as well put LB Poly in the bowl game if they win CIF. Playoff system needs to be implemented ASAP. There are always excuses not to have a playoff and I wonder what entity benefits from that??

    What is to debate?
Edison has a strong SoS and is ranked higher than Oceanside in every ranking system in the state… Tennis talks out of both sides of his mouth on every post… Oceansides loss to Chaparral should have moved Edison past them over a month ago. Everybody has an excuse after a loss. Winning% does not take into affect who you did or did not have… If SoS is not an issue, why isn’t Citrus Hill the #1 team? They are undefeated!!!

    • Posted November 28, 2012 at 12:31 pm | Permalink

wasco is 12-0,they beat an 11-1 chowchilla by 50 points in playoff ,No. 9 Mission Oak (Tulare )held the number one ranking for a week and were in the top five most of the year and they got beat by a very good Bakersfield Christian team, which wasco beat easily 49-0 , Bakersfield Christian 10-2 will have another shot at wasco, in the central section finals and if wasco wins and goes undefeated i dont see how you could leave a 13-0 untested and only unbeaten team in D-3 out of the bowl game

    • Posted November 28, 2012 at 1:05 pm | Permalink

Bakersfield Christian lost earlier 31-7 to Ontario Christian, which is a D4 team. Gotta give em credit, though, for beating Mission Oak. Wasco also hasn’t played anyone close to Serrano (Paraclete’s only loss), hasn’t beaten a big school like Dorsey of L.A. (Paraclete did) and hasn’t played anyone close to as good as Valhalla (San Diego Madison’s only loss). We just like the strength of schedule that the Paraclete-Monrovia winner and the St. Augustine-Madison winner will have.

Serra has 2 losses. It does not matter if that second loss is to the Patriots. When you match up 1 loss to 1 loss, then you may compare the quality of team they lost to like Edison has been doing all year with their weak SOS. But that extra loss should be counted as a loss at that point. So when Serra beats an over rated and overconfident Chaminade, they should not be automatically placed in there..

Let’s state some facts for several of Oceanside’s fans: Oceanside lost to Chaparral 40-30. Chaparral lost to Tesoro 17-14. Tesoro lost to San Clemente 29-21. EDISON BEAT SAN CLEMENTE 31-3. Connect the dots…do you see a common ground?

edison – ???? A weak team from a weak league. Good luck if you girls make it there, you’re not very good in big games.
Oceanside wins Championships, and that’s a fact.
edison… Lives off of… one team who beats another team who beats whatever team and somehow that establishes them as great?? Now can you connect those dots?

Last I recollected Edison didn’t play Oceanside. So your 6 degree of separation nonsense is meaningless. Its about matchups heaad to head, not by using other teams. Yet, Edison is using a other team Mater Dei for all their hopes to get a State Playoff game.

So the claims that the Sunset League is weak and Edisons SoS is weak are simply unfactual..

Clearly polls created and managed by humans are not an exact science. No matter how much computer stats you use, it still comes down to human input. Mark Tennis has a very hard job in putting this together week after week. That being said, there needs to be a bottom line. There are more than enough undefeated and 1 loss teams that can make more than a strong arguement to get the bid for the regional bowl game. The bottom line has to be 2 losses! No matter who those losses are to. There HAS to be a cut off point. If you can make an arguement for 2 losses, then the same arguement can be made for 3 or 4 losses. The first requirement is you have to win you section title. Perfect, makes total sense. The next one should be no more than 1 loss. PERIOD. This is the state title we are talking about!! I make no bones about it, im from Oceanside and am an Oceanside fan. Believe me, if Oceanside had 2 losses, you wouldnt be hearing from me right now. I have to be real. If you lose 2 games, you dont deserve to be a state champion. One loss is too many!! If Serra, Edison and Oceanside all win, the bid should go to Edison and Oceanside. One loss verses two. Oceanside and Edison should not be penalized for the other teams in there league that someone or some computer tells us is “weaker” than Serra’s. They HAVE to play those teams, they have no choice. If Serra is as “strong” as we are being led to believe, then how did they lose twice?? As I said before, all good and great teams have hiccups and lose one game they maybe shouldnt have. Or even got out matched. But twice is pushing the limit. There has to be a limit and bottom line. Without it, we might as well use to age old “inny minnie miny moe” to pick the teams.

    • Posted November 29, 2012 at 12:59 pm | Permalink

Your “2-loss” rule may work for the larger schools, but for the smaller schools, strength of schedule has to be taken into account. For example, 2 of Santa Fe Christian’s 3 losses were against much larger DII schools with enrollment’s over 2000 (SFC enrollment = 416), and the other loss was a very close loss (13-8) against Bishop Diego (#1 in DV for much of the year) on the road. SFC could have easily been undefeated if it had chosen to play cupcakes instead. Teams shouldn’t be penalized for choosing to play a tough schedule. Your rule would just provide incentive for teams to play easy non-conference schedules.

Not if you can win your non-conference games! If you want to be a state champ, you should be able to win those games. Not lose them and use then as a crutch to get in the bowl.

Poly has 3 losses, Mater Dei has 2 losses, I dont buy what your sayin otherwise one loss is too many . There are teams like serrano ,Citrus Hiil, the winner will have no losses, no hicups as you call them and were never outplayed. Zero losses is always better than one if judging by W/L only, right?

I agree with you. One loss is too many. Those undefeated teams are getting screwed. My problem is with Serra not Chaminade. If I argue against you guys getting the bid then im defeating my own arguement. Past performances should have no weight in this years polls. My point is 1 loss should be the cut off. If you lose 2 your out. Bottom line!!

In 2008 the D2 choice came down to Cathedral Catholic (12-0) and Oceanside (11-0-1). Cathedral got the bid pretty much because Oceanside had that tie to a Ramona team they should have destroyed. I had no problem with that. If one tie is worse than no ties and no losses, then how is 2 losses better than 1??

READ THIS: The fact is that the Cali HS football “BOWL” is flawed. Oceanside opened up by beating then Nor Cal #1, DII Oakdale and destroyed them. Oakdale is currently #3 and (12-1) in Nor Cal. This system pre determined what the rankings were to be by assigning teams mathmatical points based solely upon HUMAN thought and opinion. Taking a look at how hightly Servite was ranked is a prime examply. How did they come to be ranked so highly? Because the human element THOUGHT the process through ad REASONED, both of which a computer cannot do, that the determined OPINION was correct. IT’S A HUMANS GUESS and nothing more. Now, if one wants to see CLEAR evidence of how flawed and MANIPULATED this failed system is look at the DII So Cal rankings!! Oceanside who has been #1 forever all of a sudden falls. Not to #2 or #3 but to #4 without having suffered a second loss! The HUMAN control factor MANIPULATED the system so that the new #1 (Chaminade) plays the new #2 (Serra) therefore gauranteeing that either way one of the HUMAN elements desired result is achieved. Then the #3 Team (Edison, previously #2) also drops without having suffered a loss. How? Why? The written explination, which is NOTHING short of pure GOOF BALL FANTASY GEEK JIBBERISH, hints that IF Edison loses to Villa Park the Spartans (VP) MIGHT have won enough “favord” with the ” GOOF BALL football fantasy GEEK idiots” to be “SELECTED” to play in the regional play in vs the winner of Chaminade.Serra. The fact is that these IDIOT “GOOF BALL fantasy football GEEKS” who have somehow been GIVEN a voice in determining the matter of which California high school athletes playing football get SELECTED (very important word here) to participate in a “BOWL” championship is nothing short of a TRAVESTY needless to say an outright EMBARRASSMENT to California high school football in general. DUMP THIS PATHETIC “BOWL” SYSTEM, ALLOW ONLY QUALIFIED TEAMS TO BE IN THE PLAYOFFS AND HAVE A LIGIT CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF SYSTEM TO BE IN PLAY. THOSE “BUBLE” TEAMS CAN PARTICIPATE IN “BOWL” GAMES SO THEY CAN GET THEIR LITTLE TROPHIES AND THEIR MOMMIES AND DADDIES CAN FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEIR LITTLE HEISMAN TROPHY WINNERS HS FOOTBALL CAREERS. If they both win, it shuld be OCEANSIDE vs EDISON in the regional play in game.

Chaminade was no good prior to this season, how are they going to rank a team 1 based on prior season if they are average. They don’t have a crystal ball to show the results of future game. Preseason polls are based on prior season, history, etc. This is Chaminades first good season.

We had Serra higher at the start from the same league. Saw a lot of their players (Green, Jackson, etc) at Nike events and love ’em. Plus, one state title and one state runner-up finish since 2009. Plus, Chaminade had never done anything beyond the semis in its 60-year history. Good luck to your team tomorrow night.

I would Think Mr calif HS stats would know that Chaminade did play in the CIF finals in 1987. So this is their second time in the finals. What that has to do with anything I dont know but at least get it right.

I give SoS more weight than Winning%.
Lompoc was undefeated, but barely had a double digt SoS…
    Their SoS was around 13…
    That is retarded…
In my world for every 6 points in SoS advantage a school has (over another school) that is worth one loss…

    Example: A 10-2 team with a 36 SoS is equal to a 9-3 team with a 30 SoS

Serra’s SoS is slightly better than Edisons (+3 points), but not enough to award any advantages…

G_Serra’s SoS is currently 36.5 and Edisons is 34.7 (1.8 difference).
That is hardly enough to award enough points to wipe away an additional loss by G_Serra.
Using my system (which is accurate IMO) G_Serra would have to have a SoS of 41.6 to actually be ranked ahead of Edison…

Mission Viejo currently is around 41.6.
That give you an idea of how many more good teams G_Serra would have had to play (and still only have 2 losses)

Chaminade got favortism this season for no valid reason. They have ONE (1) league championship since 2006 and then they won the league with a 9-4 record. Additionally CHAMINADE is a PRIVATE school so absolutley MONEY and POLITICS plays heavily into their ranking this season. SO many teams are so over hyped and over ranked it is ridicilous. Wathching Notre Dame, Oaks Christian, Serra,,,these teams have very few DI calibur athletes. ESPECIALLY Chaminade. Also playing St Francsis, St Paul, Valencia, Venice Harvard Westlake, Pacificia, Morrow Bay don’t help. On Oceansides schedule they play more DI teams than they do DII (Carlsbad, Vista, Mission Hills, Poway-who dropped to DII only this season, El Camino) during the regular season. And, Mission Hills is in the DI finals. Lets not forget Oakdale (Nor Cal DII #3) who is playing in their DII finals. If the true goal for Cali HS football is to be fair and ligit (which might not actually even be a goal) then you have to have a playoff OR do like NJ and have a seperate “PRIVATE” school and “PUBLIC” school playoff format and championship for each. Oceanside is playing for their 12th CIF championship in 14 seasons, made the CIF semis for the 19th consecutive season (second only to Concord De La Salle) and their 14th CIF Championship in 15 years along with (2) state titles since 2006 with 1 in DII and the other in DI. Additionally the school REGULARLY sends its seniors on to college programs like CAL, UTAH, WASH ST, SDSU, USC as well as a host of DIAA, DII and JUCO progras where they then go on to college programs. Lets also not forget that the section that Oceanside plays in and the teams they play against have produced: MARCUS ALLEN, REGGIE BUSH, RICKEY WILLIAMS & RASHAM SALLAM. No other HS section in the COUNTRY has produced (4) Heisman winners. NONE.

THE BEST WAY TO SETTLE IT IS ON THE FIELD.

  33. Posted November 29, 2012 at 1:04 pm | Permalink

CIF Southern Section also has four Heisman winners so not sure if that ruins your argument or not. Also don’t know which games you saw Oaks Christian, Serra, Chaminade or others actually play. These teams certainly do not have “very few” D1 calibre athletes. I agree completely that the best way to settle this is on the field, but the way our state is set up a true state playoff is never going to happen. The sections are not going to give up one or two rounds of their football playoffs to accommodate a state system and schools are not going to give up a 10th regular season game. It’s reality. Just isn’t going to happen. People need to ask themselves if what we have now is better than nothing.

I agree with the politics with private schools, but I can say that Serra, Chaminade,Oaks, MD, etc are loaded with Div 1 talent. For what Oceanside has done for so long as a public school is remarkable. As for DLS…if Pittsburg would have real coaching they would not be as dominate. Pittsburg is the “poly” of the bay area and if a coach would go in and take reigns…they would truly rival DLS for a section championship.

@Blackbeard-The bottom line is Oceanside lost to a weak team. What does that say about Oceanside? Everyone continues to say that Edison is riding on the coat tails of Mater Dei, but somehow fail to mention that when the final decision is being made as to who gets a bid, everyone’s losses are looked at and compared (team by team.) So as you continue to talk of Mater Dei, others then focus on who you lost to. Losses matter…it’s a fact and a Narbonne loss doesn’t look so good for Oceanside. So continue talking about Edison/Mater Dei coat tails as your rants shine a bright light on Oceanside/Narbonne loss (yes…more dots to connect.) Thanks for pumping Edison up!

I think it can’t be ignored when a team does not look great against average opponents… Not sure if that is taken into consideration… but is having one bad night with half the defense out against an undefeated/state ranked/confident (at the time) team more showing than a team that for much of its season looked very unimpressive in victories against average teams. They may have won, yes, but looking good while winning should be considered… I guess that is more of the human side in the rankings…

A question for Mark Tennis… At these bowl selections, when teams each have at least one loss, do the committees place more emphasis on comparing the wins of the two teams in question or their losses?

IMO the wins are significantly more important but maybe others disagree with that…

If they do compare wins, Edison has always had one of the toughest pre-season schedules year in and year out. That will definitely help their case. Wow some interesting comments. La Serna should be higher ranked. They beat Westlake 38 to 9 on the road, after Westlake had beaten Div 1  teams  in the North Granite Bay currently ranked 7 and Del Oro 11 and Div 1 South Crenshaw  ranked 5 and statewide rank of 7. La Serna only loss was to Norco another Div 1 school which they led 16 to 6 after the first quarter. In my bias opinion they should ranked higher in Division 1 south and at least 25 statewide.

Answering question earlier about whether the committee looks at comparing wins and losses. I’ve never been in the room (been presenting before the meeting and in it afterward for KBC internet) during the process but the losses are certainly scrutinized and teams from lower divisions (this is D2 we’re talking about) can and have benefited by being linked to a top team from a “higher” division. Last year, remember, Del Oro of Loomis certainly benefitted because during the meeting it was no doubt mentioned that its only loss was in overtime to Westlake (this fact also would have been made after Westlake was voted in as the South Open Division team). This year, I think Edison could benefit similarly if it wins in addition to Mater Dei since its only loss is by 6 to MD. The committee also will look for significant wins. Edison lacks in that department while Oceanside has the possibility of getting a better last win in its game against Poway. Poway, after all, was the D1 champ for San Diego last year and was on the board. The San Diego Section commissioner also can point to the win over Mission Hills if it wins this year’s D1 title. I’ve been in this business for nearly 35 years and this D2 South situation will almost surely be controversial no matter which way the vote goes. Whichever school that doesn’t get picked is going to have a legit beef about it. The only way that isn’t going to happen is if Villa Park or Poway pull off the upset? Who knows, maybe they both win and the argument is between Villa Park, Poway, La Serna and the winner of Serrano vs. Citrus Hill. These teams still have to play one more game.
