Here are the first top 20 girls basketball polls for the new year in support of the Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area TV show. St. Mary’s of Berkeley is No. 1 after huge win over state No. 1 and national No. 2 Mater Dei of Santa Ana on Saturday.

All-State Basketball: Girls Elite Squads

Unlike the boys’ first team that had eight seniors and two juniors, the girls’ team only has five seniors, with three juniors and two sophomores.

They’ve Got Talent: State’s Underclass Girls Lead Nation

For one two-week stretch, these 70 non-seniors showed the Cal-Hi Sports Caravan they’ve got the skills and talent to gain the attention of Division I colleges. Yes, the Samuelson sisters are amazing, but so is a freshman class led by Dijonai Carrington.

Star players for Monarchs and Wildcats both look great in leading their teams to wins at Nike Extravaganza and P.A.W. Division IV Showcase. State-ranked St. Mary’s of Berkeley and St. Bernard of Playa del Rey also among big winners.

New State Top 20 Girls BB Rankings

Both No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 2 Windward survive upset bids. The week’s only newcomer is Oaks Christian of Westlake Village while the biggest win was posted by No. 11 Miramonte of Orinda at the Campolindo Shootout.
