All-State Football Nominees (CIFSS)

If there’s a player who should get free tickets to the new arena of the Golden State Warriors, it’s Chase Center (left), the senior QB from Crescenta Valley (La Crescenta) who helped the Falcons win a section title and finish 14-0 after they declined to participate in CIF regional/state bowls. At right is tight end Jack Yary of Murrieta Valley. The son of one of the greatest linemen ever from a California high school, Ron Yary, had committed to USC (where his father played), but recently de-committed. Jack still hadn’t signed or committed as of January 1. Photos: crescentavalleyweekly.com & @MVNighthawkFB / Twitter.com.

Here is the third of three, free-to-see nominations lists of players who are part of the early stages of the selection process for our annual all-state teams, which this year will be the 41st consecutive year they have been done. The first lists were from CIF sections in Northern California with the second one for the CIF Central Section, L.A. City Section and San Diego. This final one is for the entire CIF Southern Section. As usual, we welcome additional nominations plus any and all input. It’s become a great way for us not only to collect additional nominees, but to learn so much more about many of the players.

Note: Cal-Hi Sports All-State Football content that will be for Gold Club members include second, final list of nominees plus second team, third team overall and All-State Juniors & Sophomores. The free posts will be first team overall and first team small schools and medium schools. If you can’t see this post and want to check out all of our rankings content, all of our all-state content and state record updates, you can check it out for just $3.99 to cover a one-month subscription. For info, CLICK HERE.

Please send any nomination with each athlete’s height, weight, position, year in school, significant statistics. Comparing a player not on the board yet to one who already is also can be very important toward eventual selection. Limit each nomination to one page please. Send to: markjtennis@gmail.com or call (209) 608-1317. Text messages to that number are okay as well.

The format we will continue to use is to honor a 30-player overall all-state first team with 30 more on second team. Each first team player is written up. There also are 30 for medium schools and 30 for small schools and yes we are struggling with what’s medium and what’s small with competitive equity. All that is certain is that players from large, public high schools will not be considered “small school.”

Don’t assume we know all there is to know about a player on the list, either. Send us info to make sure all pertinent information is turned in and placed into our files.

Special thanks for the work done on these nomination lists to Northern California correspondent Daniel Poulter. He’s a great follow on Twitter and did great work for us on our State Top 50 rankings packages this season. Check him out at @DanielJPoulter.

Why are you including players that barely even played this year? Is this not based on actual performance … or is it just name recognition. You have players that were hurt for 75% of the season, transfers that only played in 4 games … and at least 1 that played in just a few games and was then kicked off the team.

We may not see injury reports for the 1,200 high schools in California.
If we know of a player who was injured and only played a few games, we take them off the list from the previous season.
If we don’t know, that player is going to continue to be listed.
We did kick off a few players that were not on their teams for various reasons, but again if we don’t know we’re going to leave a player on until we do know.
When we get to actually picking players on all-state teams, we will know all of those who didn’t play in enough games.
Part of the reason for doing nomination lists is to find out about players like you describe and it’s why these are not the final all-state nomination lists we’ll look at.
