KDOC To Televise HSBB Games

KDOC-TV, Channel 56, will telecast 20 boys basketball games for the 2019-20 season involving CIF Southern Section and L.A. City Section Schools. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Game of the Week on KDOC-TV will feature many teams featured in our preseason Cal-Hi Sports state rankings.

It was recently announced KDOC-TV, Channel 56, would expand its coverage of SoCal high school basketball, which means highly-regarded high school teams will be on television more than ever before in our state’s history. Last season KDOC-TV televised eight games, and the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Game of the Week broadcast agreement extension (through the 2021-22 season) calls for 20 games to be televised this season.

Regular season high school basketball games in California have been televised sporadically over the last 20 years after Fox signed an agreement with Student Sports (which Cal-Hi Sports was part of at that time) to produce games in 1997. The first televised high school basketball game after that agreement was signed was at the third Nike Extravaganza during the 1996-97 regular season, when a Dominguez (Compton) featuring point guard Kenny Brunner, future NBA forward Tayshaun Prince and Grid-Hooper Jason Thomas took on national power Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.). That fall, Fox began its popular high school football game of the week with a matchup between Justin Vargas-led Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks vs. Alemany (Mission Hills). Fox has been televising a game of the week in football ever since, with occasional basketball broadcasts.

With technology making streaming much easier and cheaper over the years, and with the announcement of this KDOC schedule, plus the recent announcement that ESPN will televise or stream 15 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) games this season, fans definitely can watch more California high school basketball games from the comfort of their homes (or smart phones) than ever before.
