State Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard

Jackson Lataimua scored the only touchdown of the game on a two-yard run in the third quarter of No. 13 San Mateo Serra’s 10-0 victory over No. 17 Valley Christian of San Jose on Saturday at Serra. Padres still have to win next week at St. Ignatius of San Francisco to earn outright title of West Catholic Athletic League. Photo: Mark Tennis.

Saturday scores added, including matchup of No. 2 and No. 3 teams in Bay Area. There was one big upset loss on the field on Friday in San Diego and a huge announcement from the CIF L.A. City Section that took state powerhouse Narbonne off the field for the upcoming postseason. Cathedral Catholic, the team that ended Narbonne’s season last year in the CIF SoCal D1-AA regional final, was the team that lost and will drop from No. 10 in last week’s rankings. Narbonne was No. 7 and will have to fall some spots as well, but clearly did enough on the field to stay in front of a lot of other State Top 50 and State Top 25 squads.

Note: Look for a brand new State Top 50 set of football rankings that won’t simply be a list on Monday. We’ll have insights and breakdowns based on more than 40 years of going to Friday night games with an overview of the state’s top teams and what’s coming up that just can’t be matched. It’s more than 8,000 words of jam-packed info. Each new set of rankings will be for Gold Club members only. The late Friday/Weekend Scoreboards will continue to be free posts and will provide snippets of info, comments and more.

(Through reported results of Saturday, Nov. 2)
THANKS TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CORRESPONDENT DANIEL POULTER FOR CONTRIBUTING TO THIS POST.

1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 10-0
Defeated No. 12 JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 51-14. Alabama commit Bryce Young was amazing again, this time going 17 of 17 passing for 373 yards and five TDs. He broke a school record he set last season. The Cal-Hi Sports state record for perfect passing is 23 of 23.

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 9-1
Defeated Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 56-10. The Braves cruised as expected and may get Calabasas in their first CIFSS D1 playoff game in two weeks.

3. De La Salle (Concord) 9-1
Defeated Clayton Valley of Concord 56-14. Spartans had 42 points by second quarter. Clayton Valley’s Omari Taylor played for his team just one day after his brother, Omar, was one of five victims of a house party shooting in Orinda.

4. Mission Viejo 10-0
Defeated Tesoro (Las Flores) 44-14. That Mission defense held Tesoro’s offense to 32 yards. All three levels of the program capped 10-0 seasons.

5. Servite (Anaheim) 7-3
Defeated No. 32 Lutheran (Orange) 34-14. Friars wrapped up third place in the Trinity League. Likely getting Mission Viejo in CIFSS D1 first-round playoff matchup.

6. Folsom 9-1
Defeated Del Oro (Loomis) 62-21. Looks like no more alternating QBs. Jake Reithmeier blasted off with seven TD passes with four going to C.J. Hutton. Del Oro actually scored first but it was 48-8 thirty seconds into the second half.

7. Narbonne (Harbor City) 8-1*
Did not play. Scheduled game vs. Banning (Wilmington) canceled and ruled no contest shortly after it was announced that Narbonne would be ineligible for the CIF L.A. City Section playoffs for the next two years (starting now) and also will have forfeit losses for the last two seasons as well. We’re sure not all the kids and not all the coaches were involved and we feel sorry for them.

8. Centennial (Corona) 8-2
Defeated Roosevelt (Eastvale) 77-20. While we don’t agree with Centennial being ranked third in SoCal (loss to Cathedral Catholic) it makes sense because the CIFSS isn’t going to want a rematch of an earlier game in the semifinals, which would happen if the Huskies were fourth and then opposite No. 1 Mater Dei. Those two opened the season against each other.

9. Helix (La Mesa) 9-1
Defeated Steele Canyon (Spring Valley) 35-23. Christian Washington led the Highlanders with four touchdowns against previously unbeaten opponent.

10. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 8-2
LOST to Lincoln (San Diego) 24-19. A stunner after the Dons were coming off their bye week. Despite loss, still seems like they might make it into San Diego Open Division (just not as top seed).

11. Central (Fresno) 10-0
Defeated Clovis East (Clovis) 42-7. Make it four straight Tri-River Athletic Conference titles for Grizzlies. Also have 23 straight TRAC wins.

12. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 6-4
LOST to No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 51-14. Losses to MD, Bosco and Servite. Wins over Bishop Amat, Calabasas.

13. Serra (San Mateo) 9-0
Defeated No. 17 Valley Christian (San Jose) 10-0 on Saturday at home field. The Padres’ defense stepped up the most in the first game without injured senior starting QB Daylin McCutcheon, but sophomore QB Dom Lampkin in his first start had some spectacular moments mixed in with a few mistakes. Damon Lewis had a key interception and made a 32-yard field goal.

14. Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 10-0
Defeated Los Alamitos 48-14. Ethan Garbers fired five more TD passes for the Sea Kings, who should be No. 1 seed for CIFSS D3 playoffs.

15. Bishop Amat (La Puente) 9-1
Defeated Loyola (Los Angeles) 38-10. Leading RB Damien Moore went out with an ankle, but Dyson McCutcheon stepped up with 127 yards rushing and three TDs.

16. Calabasas 7-2*
Did not play. Coyotes had their scheduled game vs. St. Bonaventure (Ventura) canceled due to the impacts of the Maria Fire. It was officially listed as a forfeit win, which wrapped up the Marmonte League title.

17. Valley Christian (San Jose) 8-1
LOST to No. 13 Serra (San Mateo) 10-0 on Saturday. The Warriors missed a field goal in their best chance of scoring. The defense played very well in the red zone. The 0-0 tie was broken after an offsides penalty gave Serra a first down at the 10-yard line. VC could still earn a share of the WCAL title if St. Ignatius of San Francisco were to upset the Padres next week.

18. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 9-1
Defeated Paraclete (Lancaster) 24-20. It was a comeback win for the Trailblazers, who got 16 of 20 passing for 184 yards and two TDs from Chayden Peery and clinched the Gold Coast League title.

19. Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 9-1
Defeated Camarillo 28-13. A fake punt TD run by Josh Henderson was one of the big plays of the game for the Lancers, who bounced back from a loss to Sierra Canyon.

20. La Habra 8-2
Defeated Sonora (La Habra) 42-6. QB Ryan Zanelli tossed five TD passes for Highlanders, who will be team to watch in CIFSS D2 playoffs.

21. Upland 7-3*
LOST to No. 31 Rancho Cucamonga 47-28. All-American LB Justin Flowe didn’t play with was reported as an abdominal bruise. We felt Upland had to be higher ranked coming into the game with a win over a Rancho Verde team that had beaten Norco after Norco had defeated Rancho Cucamonga.

22. Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley) 9-1
Defeated Heritage (Menifee) 44-0. Jordan Jefferson led the way for head coach Pete Duffy’s crew by scoring five touchdowns.

23. Pittsburg 8-1
Defeated Antioch 42-41 on Saturday. It was quite a battle in the Big Little Game rivalry as the huge underdog Panthers almost pulled off a big upset. They went for two with a chance to win at the finish but did not convert.

24. Liberty (Brentwood) 9-1
Defeated Heritage (Brentwood) 59-6. Known as the Brentwood Bowl, it was an easy win as expected for the Lions over the Patriots.

25. San Clemente 8-2
Did not play. Head coach Jaime Ortiz’s squad completed its regular season last week with a loss to No. 4 Mission Viejo. The Tritons will be in the CIFSS D2 playoffs.

There were teams (not just in State Top 25) from all over the state on Friday looking to go 10-0 for the regular season. One of those was Inglewood, which has one of the state’s most prolific QBs (Jared Heywood). The Sentinels improved to 10-0 with a 48-0 victory over their arch-rivals from Morningside. TEAMS ON THE BUBBLE

Alemany (Mission Hills) 7-2*
Defeated Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 35-29.

Buchanan (Clovis) 7-3
Defeated Clovis North (Fresno) 45-27. C.J. Jones had a monster night for Bears with two interception return touchdowns plus a kickoff return TD.

Camarillo 9-1
LOST to No. 19 Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 28-13.

Carlsbad 9-1
Defeated Vista 26-14. Matchup of Avocado and Palomar League champions. Lancers clinched spot in SD Open Division.

Culver City 10-0
Defeated Beverly Hills 55-0. State Medium Schools No. 1 team.

Inderkum (Sacramento) 10-0
Defeated Roseville 21-14. THis was an even closer call for the Tigers than their recent two-score triumphs against River Valley and Yuba City.

St. Mary’s of Stockton head coach Tony Franks (right) poses with former Ram and NFL rushing champion Doug Martin. St. Mary’s won another league title on Friday with 27-14 win over Lincoln of Stockton. Senior QB Noah May unofficially passed for 272 yards and 2 TDs with one going to senior Jamar Marshall (our State Junior Athlete of the Year for 2018-19) and the other going to Jadyn Marshall (Jamar’s younger sophomore brother). Lawndale 7-3
Defeated Hawthorne 48-0. CIFSS D5 champs from last year will be in D4 this season.

Defeated Bakersfield 37-7. Only loss to Buchanan.

Lutheran (Orange) 4-6
LOST to No. 5 Servite (Anaheim) 34-14.

Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 9-1
Defeated Tamalpais (Mill Valley) 56-7 on Saturday.

McClymonds (Oakland) 8-0
Defeated Oakland High 68-0.

Norco 8-2
Defeated Corona 70-14. Finished in 2nd place in Big XIII League behind Corona Centennial.

Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 7-2
Defeated Elk Grove 30-21. Trojans already were done with their Sierra Foothill League schedule. Elk Grove from the Delta League and will be in SJS D2 playoffs. Oak Ridge looks like No. 2 seed in D1.

Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 5-5
Defeated Westlake (Westlake Village) 35-14. Semaj Freeman’s 47-yard TD run after an interception in the end zone stopped the Warriors from possibly tying the game gave the Lions a 14-0 lead. Oaks had to win to ensure a CIFSS D2 playoff spot.

Palos Verdes (PV Estates) 8-2
Defeated Peninsula (RH Estates) 44-0.

Rancho Cucamonga 8-2
Defeated No. 21 Upland 47-28. Don’t have numbers yet, but C.J. Stroud had another big night at QB for Cougars.

St. Augustine (San Diego) 8-2
Defeated Point Loma (San Diego) 31-28.

Steele Canyon (Spring Valley) 9-1
LOST to No. 9 Helix (La Mesa) 35-23.

St. Mary’s (Stockton) 6-4
Defeated Lincoln (Stockton) 27-14. Lincoln was unbeaten and while competitive wasn’t quite yet ready to take down the Rams, who haven’t lost a league game since 2006. St. Mary’s losses all to higher-ranked teams De La Salle, Mission Viejo, Serra (SM) and Pittsburg.

Wilcox (Santa Clara) 7-2
Defeated Santa Clara High 63-7. First time out for Warriors after the male cheerleader harassment story broke was not hard. Community healing was common theme expressed by district spokespersons.

The CIF is not seeding Centennial third to avoid a rematch with Mater Dei. Many of us feel Centennial is the third best team in the SS, as most rankings bear out.

So “most” rankings don’t care that Centennial lost a game to Cathedral Catholic? Sorry, but results on the field should matter more. Other rankings are giving them a pass for that loss. They might indeed be the third best team, but we’ll never know because Mission and them aren’t going to play.

Since Narbonne Harbor Played Pittsburg Pirates 2 years ago in 2018 so that means Pittsburg won Division 1 for California as i went to that game and remember they hurt our Quarterback Jason Boyd as we was winning 21 to 0 then then took the lead 22 to 21 but we was close for a winning Field goal but Narbonne Harbor hurt our only kicker yes we get a penalty only 5 yards so we attempted another kick but the whole Narbonne yelling he was faking the kick he was unable to even kick the ball.

Two years ago was 2017 season and Narbonne is not vacating that championship. And when a school vacates a title, no school is listed as a champion. It assumes that the runner-up would have beaten the other team that would have made it from the other side of a bracket without the school being disciplined.
