State Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard

Saturday updates added. It seemed like a lot of the most anticipated games in Southern California since the season began took place on Friday with the headliner of course being No. 1 Mater Dei playing No. 2 St. John Bosco. The Monarchs won, but the Braves know they won in the first game between the two last year only to lose in a rematch. Also winning on Friday were No. 4 Mission Viejo over No. 21 San Clemente, No. 23 Sierra Canyon over No. 10 Grace Brethren and No. 17 Calabasas over No. 22 Oaks Christian.

Note: Look for a brand new State Top 50 set of football rankings that won’t simply be a list on Monday. We’ll have insights and breakdowns based on more than 40 years of going to Friday night games with an overview of the state’s top teams and what’s coming up that just can’t be matched. It’s more than 8,000 words of jam-packed info. Each new set of rankings will be for Gold Club members only. The late Friday/Weekend Scoreboards will continue to be free posts and will provide snippets of info, comments and more.

(Rankings based on last week’s State Top 50 released last Monday)
(Through reported results of Saturday, Oct. 27)
THANKS TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CORRESPONDENT DANIEL POULTER FOR CONTRIBUTING TO THIS POST.

1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 9-0
Defeated No. 2 St. John Bosco 38-24. This was the first time these two played at Bosco’s Panish Family Stadium, which opened last season. Bryce Young passed for 256 yards and three TDs with all three going to Kody Epps. Young also rushed for two scores. The comparisons with this team to Mater Dei’s 2017 consensus national title team should only continue to grow.

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 8-1
LOST to No. 1 Mater Dei 38-24. The Braves were down 31-10 in the third quarter, but got it to 38-24 with 10:44 left on a 48-yard TD pass from D.J. Uigalelei to Kris Hutson. They had a later drive to the Mater Dei 8-yard line that could have made it 38-31 but that drive ended on a fourth down incomplete pass. The two teams likely will play again in the CIF Southern Section Division I championship game.

3. De La Salle (Concord) 8-1
Did not play. The Spartans had a bye and will close their regular season next Friday at home vs. Clayton Valley of Concord. They probably spent a lot of time this week on Mater Dei & St. John Bosco because if there’s one advantage they do have against those two is that they’re 90 percent sure they’re going to be in the CIF Open Division state final.

4. Mission Viejo 9-0
Mission Viejo made quick work of No. 21 San Clemente, as the Diablos cruised to a 38-6 win. Mission Viejo clinched a share of the South Coast League title for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons. Easton Mascarenas grabbed a 54-yard pick six to put the game out of reach early.

5. Servite (Anaheim) 6-3
Defeated Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 27-0 in a Thursday night contest. Sophomore QB Noah Fifita had another strong outing. The Friars have already played Mater Dei, Bosco and JSerra in the Trinity League with Orange Lutheran remaining.

6. Folsom 8-1
The Bulldogs had little trouble with a once formidable Grant (Sacramento) program, as Folsom blew out the Pacers 62-17. UC Davis commit CJ Hutton added another kick return to his stat list, as the senior had a 96-yard kickoff return for a score to counter a Pacers score. Malik Rose added in with the non-offense touchdowns, as the sophomore took a pick 78 yards for the touchdown.

7. Narbonne (Harbor City) 8-1*
The Gauchos had a running clock quickly as they bashed Banning (Wilmington) 52-3. They’ll play Banning’s rivals from Carson next week.

8. (8) Centennial (Corona) 7-2
Centennial had a 35-0 lead at halftime against M.L. King (Riverside) and took the foot off the gas for a 42-0 rout. Huskies seem locked in the No. 3 spot for upcoming CIFSS D1 playoffs.

9. Helix (La Mesa) 8-1
The San Diego Section’s No. 1 team didn’t have an issue with Granite Hills (El Cajon), as the Highlanders defeated the Eagles 49-27. They will play 9-0 Steele Canyon next week.

10. Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 8-1
LOST to No. 23 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 13-7. The Lancers saw their usually dominant running game shut down by the Trailblazers. Mikey Zele’s 35-yard TD pass to Jaden Hammer accounted for their only score.

11. Central (Fresno) 9-0
Defeated Clovis West (Fresno) 56-21 on Thursday. Remember, Clovis West is a team that beat Central Catholic of Modesto in its first game. Head coach Kyle Biggs has things really rolling at Central.

12. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 8-1
Did not play. Don are playing Lincoln (San Diego) next week in regular season finale.

13. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 6-3
No. 30 Orange Lutheran held close with JSerra, but couldn’t muster any offense against a tough defensive unit. JSerra pulled away in the second half for a 19-0 victory. Keegan Netherton had a 40-yard pick six in the third quarter to help with the victory.

14. Serra (San Mateo) 8-0
Defeated Sacred Heart Cathedral (SF) 35-7 on Saturday. The major development, however, was a season ending injury to QB Daylin McLemore. He went out with a broken collarbone in his non-throwing shoulder. There will be a new QB for the Padres when they host unbeaten Valley Christian of San Jose next Saturday with the West Catholic Athletic League title on the line.

15. Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 9-0
It was close for one quarter between Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor (Newport Beach), but the Sea Kings take the “Battle of the Bay” 56-17. Corona del Mar scored 28 points in the second quarter and was too much for Newport Harbor. University of Washington quarterback commit Ethan Garbers found John Humphreys four times for touchdowns for the game.

16. Bishop Amat (La Puente) 8-1
The Lancers wrapped up a Mission League title with a 35-21 victory over Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks). Damien Moore continues to be the machine for Bishop Amat, as the University of California, Berkeley commit grabbed four total touchdowns and ran for 165 yards. Amat also has wrapped up a spot in CIFSS D1 playoffs, which is good news or bad news depending on your feelings about being in the same division as Mater Dei and Bosco.

17. Calabasas 7-2
Defeated No. 22 Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 30-27. Steven Rauso made a 25-yard field goal with 20 seconds left for the Coyotes to get the win. The two teams were tied 20-20 and 27-27 in the fourth quarter. Calabasas also has pretty much wrapped up spot in CIFSS D1 playoffs.

18. Valley Christian (San Jose) 8-0
One half of the West Catholic Athletic League title game was set on Friday (the other on Saturday), as Valley Christian avoided its trap game against Bellarmine Prep (San Jose) and rolled to a 28-0 victory at San Jose City College. The score was 0-0 after the first quarter, but Tyler Roberts grabbed a muffed punt by the Bells are returned it for a touchdown. Valley Christian led by 21 points at the break and will take on No. 14 Serra (San Mateo) next Saturday in San Mateo.

19. Alemany (Mission Hills) 6-2*
LOST to Serra (Gardena) 32-25 in Mission League play. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, but 16 points in the second frame was huge for Serra. Star running back Floyd Chalk had 222 yards and crossed the goal line twice for Alemany. Serra has four losses, but now has wins this year over both Alemany and Calabasas.

20. La Habra 6-2
Troy (Fullerton) was quickly run over by the Highlanders, as La Habra jumped out to a 37-0 lead at halftime and finished off the evening with a 50-3 rout.

21. San Clemente 8-2
The Tritons struggled against No. 4 Mission Viejo and Cole Thompson kicked two field goals for the only scoring in a 38-6 defeat. The Tritons wouldn’t have done much in the CIFSS D1 bracket anyway and now they’ll be in a more competitive D2.

22. Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 4-5
LOST to No. 17 Calabasas 30-27. Forget the losing record. Lions played evenly with Coyotes all night and could be a popular upset special team in CIFSS D2.

23. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 8-1
Defeated No. 10 Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 13-7. Chayden Peery reportedly passed for more than 300 yards, including 35-yard TD to D.J. Harvey. Jason Jones Jr. also scored on 32-yard run. Trailblazers have been behind Oaks Christian in the rankings with a head-to-head loss but can now go much higher after beating Lancers.

24. Upland 7-2*
The Highlanders jumped out to a 28-7 lead in the second half, but had to hold on for a 28-21 victory over Chino Hills. They have been pointing for several weeks toward a matchup with Rancho Cucamonga next week that should determine the Baseline League title.

25. Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley) 7-1
This team took care of Paloma Valley (Menifee) early and coasted to a 56-7 victory over the Wildcats. Mustangs quarterback AJ Duffy was accurate, as the sophomore was 15-of-18 for 303 passing yards and added five touchdowns through the air. Andre McKinney Jr. grabbed six catches of Duffy’s for 184 yards and two scores.

Sheldon Conde rushed for two TDs to lead Del Oro of Loomis past Top 25 bubble team (but in the State Top 50) Rocklin 21-14. Golden Eagles have a tradition of playing their best and stepping up in big games as the season ends. They did that last year and went to the CIF Division 2-AA state championship (lost to Grace Brethren). Photo: Mark Tennis.

TEAMS ON THE BUBBLE

Buchanan (Clovis) 6-3
The Bears only had a 26-14 lead over Clovis East (Clovis) at halftime, but blanked Clovis East in the second half for a 40-14 victory. Five-star Georgia commit Kendall Milton had four touchdowns.

Camarillo 9-0
Defeated Thousand Oaks 47-6. Scorpions meeting Grace Brethren next week for league title.

Carlsbad 8-1
Lancers didn’t make it easy, but they are the Avocado League champions after holding off La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) 14-7.

Culver City 9-0
Hawthorne was pushed aside by Culver City, as the Centaurs cruised to a 55-8 win. They square off with Beverly Hills next week.

Inderkum (Sacramento) 9-0
Defeated Yuba City 35-20. Second straight 35-20 win for Tigers over team you’d have expected them to beat more easily.

Lawndale 6-3
El Segundo wasn’t much of a challenge for Lawndale, as the Cardinals raced to a 44-0 victory. Jalon Daniels connected for 175 passing yards and scored three total touchdowns.

Liberty (Bakersfield) 8-1
The Patriots are starting to find their groove, as they pushed past Garces Memorial (Bakersfield) 31-0 in Southwest Yosemite League play. Only loss to Buchanan.

Liberty (Brentwood) 8-1
After falling to Pittsburg last week, the Lions grabbed a tune up game victory over winless Deer Valley (Antioch) in a 63-22 rout.

Lutheran (Orange) 4-5
The Lancers weren’t able to pick up much traction against No. 13 JSerra (SJ Capistrano) in a 19-0 loss.

McClymonds (Oakland) 7-0
Defeated Fremont (Oakland) 70-0. Third straight Oakland Athletic League shutout for Warriors.

Norco 7-2
Roosevelt (Eastvale) scored once in the first quarter, but was shutout the rest of the way as Norco blasted Roosevelt 56-7.

Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 6-2*
Defeated Granite Bay 34-7. Still has that close loss to Folsom that may help the Trojans gain No. 2 seed in Sac-Joaquin Sec D1 playoffs behind Bulldogs.

Pittsburg 8-1
The Pirates didn’t have their best game after taking down Top 25 Liberty (Brentwood) last week, but still beat Heritage (Brentwood) 28-9 Friday evening. Pittsburg should wrap up the Bay Valley Athletic League title next week vs Antioch.

Rancho Cucamonga 7-2*
Rancho Cucamonga wasn’t looking ahead to its showdown with Upland and handled Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga) 41-6.

Rocklin 6-3
LOST to Del Oro (Loomis) 21-14. Del Oro’s defense held the Thunder to just one score until 1:31 remained. Rocklin’s other losses to Folsom and team from Nevada. Del Oro is playing Folsom next week.

St. Augustine (San Diego) 7-2
Saints managed the War Hawks and came away with a 35-18 victory over Madison (SD). Richard Colmenero III threw for 296 yards on 11-of-18 passing and four touchdowns.

Wilcox (Santa Clara) 6-2
Did not play. Bye. Chargers in news big time, though, with an issue of a male cheerleader being harassed. The fallout may not be over yet, either.

Pittsburg played with their 2nd string quarterback as 1st string qb only played 1 series and 3rd string quarterback ended the game that’s why it was closer then most thing.

Mark, just for fun, if Mission Viejo came up to play Folsom at this point in the season what would be your score prediction?

Always think traveling team in a north vs south game gives up some points so I’ll go Folsom 35, Mission 34. Both are playing well right now.
Folsom will get a home game for the NorCal 1-AA final after traveling to Fresno last year.

Makes sense… thanks! What a game that would be.
