With many teams on first-round playoff byes and those that did play winning quite easily, there was only one move made on this week’s CIF Bowl Boards. Instead of doing a new feature post, this week we’ll just go over that one change in a blog post and direct people to look at last week’s Gold Club post with all divisions broken down.

The only change was in the north and involved teams from the CIF Northern Section, which last week ended its regular season and doesn’t begin playoffs until this week.
On the previous board, we had West Valley of Cottonwood highest among those teams because of a head-to-head win over Paradise, which entering the week was leading the Eastern Athletic League with no league losses. The Bobcats, however, got throttled in their regular season finale by Pleasant Valley of Chico 38-6. That created a three-way tie for the EAL crown between PV, Chico High (which beat the Vikings two weeks ago 17-10) and Paradise (which had an earlier win over Chico).
In the Northern Section pairings that were done last weekend, Chico took the top seed in D2 with Pleasant Valley at No. 2 and Paradise at No. 3. The Panthers also have a win over Sutter (defending D3 champions). They won in their last regular season game 42-7 against Foothill of Palo Cedro.
For this week’s NorCal bowl board, we placed Chico in the same slot that West Valley was in last week (D4-A opposite Rio Linda representing Sac-Joaquin D4) and just lowered West Valley to D5-AA (opposite of Colfax representing Sac-Joaquin D5). It looks like Chico or Pleasant Valley is going to win the Northern Section D2 title and that either West Valley or Sutter will win in D3. There clearly isn’t a team like Shasta of Redding from last year (unbeaten until losing to Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara in D3-AA state final) or even Sutter from last year (which lost to Half Moon Bay). Whichever section teams win are going to be lower on the board than last season.
In the south, meanwhile, there would be zero changes to any of the placements we had from the previous week.

Wow, to come up with logical predictions of Cal Bowl match ups, especially in the mid and lower divisions takes a tremendous amount of research as well as knowledge! Thank you for doing that.
One team I took an interest in following this season and I don’t believe you have on the board, is a new school in Perris: the Orange Vista Coyotes coached by Greg Zomalt (Is he related to crosstown Citrus Hill coach Eric Zomalt?) with a regular season record of 9-1, losing only to Mission Valley League Champ the El Monte Lions, also at 9-1. 14-20 Week 4. The Coyotes won the Inland Valley League 5-0 with their closest league win against Elsinore Lakeside 38-7. Their regular season average margin of victory was by 35.6 points (45.2 in league). They won their 1st two SS-D13 playoff games Menifee Santa Rosa Academy 42-0, and Anaheim Loara 43-0. They’re the only SS-D13 team in their league with the others as high as SS-D8. El Monte got the #1 seed for the SS-D13 playoffs with the Coyotes getting #2 since El Monte beat them head on. However, although the Lions beat their opponents by similiar margins, the Mission Valley League has 2 other SS-D13 teams. Freeman’s computer has the Coyotes slightly higher than the Lions. Also, SS-D13 has 81 teams which had to compete for 16 playoff spots, which the odds would indicate that it’s considerably stronger than any of the other sections’ lowest playoff divisions, of which many are empty-bracketed and/or 3 rounders. If the CIF bowl committee looks at everything, the SS-D13 champ should be no lower than CIF-5A.
I agree with your “board” for the most part, but one I would question is Brentwood Liberty ahead of Fresno Central for 1AA North. Not only do I feel the Grizzlies are a stronger team than the Lions (look at Central beating Buchanan 42-24 one week after DLS “only” beat the Bears 31-24. Liberty would have to play Dela a lot tougher than I think they will to overcome that “fact”.), I doubt if the commitee would put a section open division runner up ahead of a strong section D-1 champ. Of course Central still has to win CS-D1 and Liberty beat Clayton Valley, than lose to DLS for any of this to have any merit.
In the Liberty-Central comparison, I’ve seen both play. Just close any way you look at it but Central just seems to be slipping a bit in recent weeks, including last night’s game with Edison in which they were tied 21-21. Also, the Zomalts are brothers. Followed both when they were tearing it up at Canyon Springs. Just have Orange Vista behind El Monte for that CIFSS division but it’s another close one.
Just a question Mark if oakdale wins out in which I believe we can this team is special not like teams before them but being in d4 I believe helped us this year but where would we be placed in a not cal game d4 large game or d4 small game
If Oakdale were to win out in that SJS division, can’t see them ahead of any of the CCS teams or McClymonds so that puts them in a likely game against whichever team comes out as the top one overall in the Northern Section (Pleasant Valley or Chico). West Valley from the division below PV and Chico’s is close, too, but its win over Paradise is now not going to come into play as much with Paradise conceding its game. Just an awful situation there and feel bad for those people.
