State Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard

Gaudie Campbell, Devonyae McClay and Willem Karnthong were three of the key players who helped Antioch improve to 4-0 with a 35-34 win on Friday over state No. 21 Clayton Valley of Concord. Photo: Mark Tennis.

The only State Top 25 team to fall to a lower-ranked opponent happened to be the game we went to as Antioch held on to edge host and No. 21 Clayton Valley of Concord 35-34. One of the nights other big winners was No. 8 Folsom, which led 35-0 in the early going and went on to blow past No. 17 Chaminade of West Hills 70-34.

Note: Look for a brand new State Top 50 set of football rankings that won’t simply be a list on Monday. (Rankings based on State Top 50 released last week)
(Through reported results of Saturday, Sept. 8)
(Contributing: Daniel Poulter)
*Indicates forfeit result not included.

1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 4-0*
Defeated St. Mary’s (Stockton) 56-0. It was another running clock victory for the Monarchs, who have a monster matchup at the Santa Ana Bowl in two weeks against IMG Academy of Florida with national title implications.

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 4-0
Defeated Paramount 56-12. Yes, we know Bosco fans aren’t always fans of Mater Dei, but we’re sure most of them are hoping the Monarchs beat IMG to further distance both of the California squads above really the rest of the nation.

3. De La Salle (Concord) 4-0
Defeated No. 18 St. Francis (Mountain View) 33-15. Junior standout Shamar Garrett had 148 rushing yards alongside two rushing touchdowns. Garrett also had an 84-yard pick six. Spartans hosting Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) next Friday.

One of the big winners of the night was Folsom and head coach Kris Richardson. Photo: Willie Eashman.

4. Centennial (Corona) 4-0
Defeated Narbonne (Harbor City) 42-23. The Huskies had some early woes in their road game at Narbonne, but had a strong second half. If they are hoping not to potentially have to beat both Mater Dei and St. John Bosco in back-to-backs of the CIF Southern Section D1 playoffs, they need to go 10-0, have MD beat Bosco in October and have the CIFSS actually count Mater Dei’s forfeit loss. That would give Centennial the top seed and then would mean MD and Bosco’s second game might be a 2 vs. 3 in the semifinals.

5. Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 4-0
Defeated No. 34 Alemany (Mission Hills) 56-14. Alemany was 3-0 coming in under new head coach Casey Clausen (a former assistant at Oaks), but wasn’t able to come close to the Lions. It was 35-0 in the first half at roughly the same time Folsom was leading Chaminade at the same time. If Oaks also goes 10-0 in regular season, Mater Dei’s forfeit loss also could push the Lions to a higher seed in the CIFSS D1 playoffs as well. It could be Centennial 1, Oaks 2, MD 3 and Bosco 4 which would reflect the forfeit loss and also still keep MD and Bosco from playing each other again until the final.

6. Lutheran (Orange) 2-1
Did not play. Bye. Up next week is a trip to play Heritage (Menifee).

7. Mission Viejo 4-0
Defeated Villa Park 28-13. The Spartans came into this matchup at 2-0 and have some D1 players, including QB (Paul Piferi) going to Purdue. Certainly another solid win for the Diablos.

8. Folsom 3-1
Defeated No. 17 Chaminade (West Hills) 70-34. Quarterback Kaiden Bennett unofficially went 16 of 23 for 339 passing and six passing touchdowns. He also had two rushing touchdowns. The Bulldogs moved up last week from No. 9 and good chance they’ll go up one or two more this week.

9. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 4-0
Defeated Pinnacle (Phoenix, Ariz.) 42-35 on Saturday at Brother in Arms Classic played at Moorpark. Pinnacle was 3-0 and was No. 2 in Arizona in at least one ranking.

10. Cajon (San Bernardino) 3-0
Did not play. Bye. The Cowboys play Oak Hills (Hesperia) next week.

11. Upland 3-0
Defeated La Mirada 25-7. Head coach Tim Salter’s team was coming off of its bye week. Still No. 1 team from CIFSS in Division 2.

12. Central (Fresno) 4-0
Defeated Paso Robles 62-0. Quarterback Trent Tompkins connected for eight touchdown passes for the game, which is the total it takes to get a listing in the state record book.

13. Servite (Anaheim) 3-0
Defeated Roosevelt (Eastvale) 32-13. The Friars also were coming off of a bye, but they will have one more this season and will only have nine games for the regular season.

14. Liberty (Brentwood) 4-0
Defeated Rocklin 51-9. The Lions’ schedule hasn’t been that great thus far, but the Bay Valley Athletic League with Pittsburg and Antioch is looking as loaded as ever.

15. Torrey Pines (San Diego) 4-0
Defeated San Pasqual (Escondido) 35-0. San Diego Section’s top-ranked teams won by this same score last week vs. Olympian of Chula Vista.

16. La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) 4-0
Defeated El Camino (Oceanside) 41-21. If you’re curious, LCC and Torrey Pines are in the same league and could be 9-0 when they eventually face each other.

17. Chaminade (West Hills) 2-2
LOST 70-34 to No. 8 Folsom. Chaminade’s other loss was 31-13 to No. 5 Oaks Christian.

Jake Thomas scored five TDs for Santa Margarita in its win vs. Mayfair. Photo: @SMCHS_Football / Twitter.com.

18. St. Francis (Mountain View) 2-1
LOST 33-15 to No. 3 De La Salle (Concord). Evan Williams had two TD catches for the Lancers, further demonstrating why he’s one of the top pass-catchers in the state. DLS had some turnovers the helped St. Francis, but still a solid outing and probably only enhances the Lancers’ status as the top team in the CIF Central Coast Section.

19. Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 2-2
Defeated Mayfair (Lakewood) 55-7. Mayfair was 3-0, but this was a huge step up in competition for the Monsoons.

20. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 3-1
Defeated No. 47 Helix (La Mesa) 30-21. This wasn’t as convincing as the win over Gardena Serra from the previous game, but Helix is the defending San Diego Section Open Division champion.

21. Clayton Valley (Concord) 3-1
LOST 35-34 to No. 45 Antioch. Looks like we went to the game of the night for teams that were in the top 25 of our State Top 50 from last week. The Ugly Eagles, who beat Pittsburg in their first game of the season, came back from a 27-6 deficit to cut the score to 35-34 with four minutes left, but missed a two-point conversion. By the time Clayton Valley got the ball back, it was just too much of a scramble for them to do anything. Three turnovers, including a kickoff return fumble for a touchdown, really hurt head coach Tim Murphy’s squad in the first half.

22. Westlake (Westlake Village) 4-0
Defeated St. Francis (La Canada) 35-21. The Warriors will have very challenging Marmonte League games against Oaks Christian and Calabasas.

23. Buchanan (Clovis) 4-0
Defeated Liberty (Bakersfield) 28-13. The Bears have De La Salle coming up in two weeks and won this game on the road against another team from the CIF Central Section that has been in our State Top 50 this season.

24. Pittsburg 2-2
Defeated No. 30 Serra (San Mateo) 45-35. The Pirates used a 24-0 third quarter to power to victory. Their two losses are to Centennial of Corona and Clayton Valley.

25. Bishop Amat (La Puente) 2-2*
Defeated Rancho Cucamonga 45-14. There was some bad news for the Lancers, however, as they lost junior running back Damien Moore for the season.

A few observations and questions from the folsom and chaminade game…

    1) i understand that folsom pulled starters at half and chaminade did not until 4th so it could have been lot worse…so it will be interesting to see sjb game next week against chaminade and the observation of that game…

    2) i understand from a dls poster and fan on a discussion board, who was at the folsom dls game, told his friends that even though he was a dls fan, he would pick folsom 8 or 9 out of 10 times to win that game but it was the 6 turnovers and red zone missed opportunities that gave it the result it was..and that folsom should have and could have won that game…now i was not there so i could not confirm and all credit to dls defense but also considering folsom moved ball well and held veer to 100 yrds and went up against that dl of dls…very possible

    3) if folsom ends up in d1aa game, there is not a non trinity league team that can compete with folsom…not even oaks christian…so we might be looking at 2014 all over again with folsom and oceanside type game

    4) so to my question…is the cif even potentially considering a last minute change for nor cal open to have a dls folsom rematch and maybe even have loser go to d1aa? I cannot imagine they want another 2014 scenario ..if dls loses to bg or even plays close win…with md beating bg 41-0 or say sjb doesnt do much better than folsom vs chaminade (or gets upset..which wont happen) or keeps starters in unlike folsom…would we want a guaranteed md or sjb match up vs dls when it is possible folsom should really have beaten dls or either nor cal team gets regulated to d1aa and could crush any other so cal team?

You are 100% right. Because of the SSD1 competitive equity the #2 or #3 school in Norcal either Folsom or DLS will play about the #10 or worse in SoCal in D1-AA game (Ex. This year Folsom destroys Alemany or Calabasas by 60), where Folsom would be in mix but have trouble with MD and SJB in Open like DLS does. Would also love to see a Folsom vs. Centennial game some year for best public in CA.

That’s just a reflection of where we are with the MD-Bosco “transfer era” teams we have now. They’re going for national No. 1, battling each other and have adopted an IMG Academy approach. At least there’s two of them and not just one slaughtering everyone else. Neither DLS or Folsom can compete. The CIF is not going to pick Folsom ahead of DLS based on what could have happened in that game between the two. They played, DLS won and still hasn’t lost to a SJS team ever so there’s no way you can look at comparative scores and do something different. Of course, Folsom could have won that game. I was up close on the Folsom sideline the entire game. Who else has ever covered Ngata and Badger with single corners on the edge and succeeded? The DLS d-line also was dominant. It’s one of the best defenses DLS has ever had. The offense still isn’t close to where it needs to be to even be competitive with MD or Bosco. The D1-AA state final is looking like Folsom vs. either Cajon or Upland. That’s not going to be the same at Oceanside. The projected winner of Cajon-Upland is going to be 15-0. I’d take that and so would the CIF.

I see what your saying about sjb, md and img…and as much as i want folsom to beat dls and be in open, would i rather have folsom win a state championship, finished ranked fairly high nationally, schedule up each year or get crushed by a md or sjb in the open..and go off that…going back a few years, having 2014 a 2014 folsom or 2010 folsom or 2008 grant play a trinity league team in the open might have been more than doable but with these so cal transfers creating more and more super teams, even dls…unless they get a bunch of tranfers…cannot compete at the same level…folsom is a public shool with an incredibly talented team with amazing receivers, running backs, solid defense, etc. ..maybe one of the best assembled offense casts in nor cal history and still probably cannot run with md or sjb..you would have to have that 2014 folsom ol with jonah williams and jake browning at qb and this years receivers and running backs and this years dls defense line to have a shot and there is virtually no way that can happen with public schools….

I am just wondering then…first, how does nor cal even compete if we continue to head that direction, does the cif have any plans or can anything even be done? second, how are public schools like allen tx or bingham utah or others able to compete with teams like img md etc..are they not subject to transfer rules or is football such a part od the culture it impacts their success?

In Texas, the publics and privates are separated so the culture there is all about giant public schools. Other than that, I don’t know. In Utah, think there is one small Catholic school that has football but that’s it. The dominant church there doesn’t have private schools with big-time football programs. If the current trends continue, the push for a similar system of private vs. public (like having a public school open division) may grow. The CIF isn’t going to want that, but the groundswell from public schools could overwhelm that.

Don’t forget DLS and Folsom are not the victims here. At least they both have a shot at a state title. Public schools like Mission Viejo, Centennial and a couple others in D1SS could compete and possibly beat Folsom in most years in a D1-AA state title game but will NEVER get chance to go because must go through SJB, MD, OLu, etc., etc in same CIF bracket. With Trinity teams getting crazy good recruiting (all of them) they really need to separate public and private in Southern Section…

As long as CIFSS wants its 16-team top division completely based on competitive equity and how that impacts the CIF state playoffs (meaning that top public school teams like Centennial & Mission Viejo probably have no chance) is of secondary importance, this is going to continue. It was only “way back” in 2014 and 2015 that Centennial won that division and you hate to say they have no chance against the big two, but probably that’s the case.

If De La Salle can shut out that Folsom offense, which could easily have scored around 90 on Chaminade, they look capable to me of beating MD or Bosco. Let’s see how they do against Gorman. I believe that MD held Gorman scoreless.

Would love to see Folsom play in Open game more than DLS, but before getting ahead of ourselves remember Chaminade is one of weaker teams in D1SS and would will also get trucked by either MD or SJB in playoffs (if they are there)… if want to compare could Folsom get through a CIF playoff (for example) of killing Chaminade, then beat OLu, then Centennial, then Mater Dei or SJB in four consecutive weeks?? Maybe but that is the difference. A trinity league team who makes it to Open game plays 5 games in league and 4 in playoffs to make 9 straight weeks of top 25 opponents (most top 15) without a break…
