CIF Central Sec: Sierra Pacific Salute

Here’s some record updates and highlights of top coaches, players & teams from the past week as reported to us from CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett of Fresno. Bob has done phenomenal work on behalf of CIF Central Section schools, athletes and coaches for more than 40 years.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Congratulations to Sierra Pacific head coach Amy Bush & players in winning the CIF Division 5 state championship. Sierra Pacific becomes the fourth team in Central Section history to win a state Championship. The first team was Woodlake in Division III in 1985 under head coach Marvin Welch. Second team was Hanford in 2001 in Division II under head coach DeWayne Tubbs. The third team was Clovis West in 2017 in the Open Division under head coach Craig Campbell. Senior Kalea Bush scored 1,085 points, Haley Bettencourt scored 1,079, Janae Tolbert scored 939 points, and Hailey Leslie 788 points in their four years of varsity play.

SOFTBALL

Clovis stayed unbeaten with a 5-1 win over Bullard of Fresno in a non-league contest (11-0 for the season). Danielle Lung pitched seven innings with 11 strikeouts and improved to 9-0 for the season. Jordyn Martinez was 2-for-3 at the plate with a homer and three RBI and Jenna Scarborough also homered.

Avery Fitch of Chowchilla had quite a day at the Fowler Easter Classic by going 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run, double, three runs scored and three RBI in a 19-0 win over Lindsay in the first game. Avery went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double & four RBI in a 12-0 over Woodlake in the second game.

Mia Barbosa from Immanuel of Reedley had a season high of five RBI, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run in a 10-2 win over Firebaugh.

Finally, junior Corrine Acosta of Exeter had a big day at the Tulare Classic by going 7-for-10 at the plate, scoring seven times and getting four RBI all in one day. The Monarchs won against Tulare 1-0, Tranquillity 20-0 and Minarets 19-1. Exeter has a 15-1 record for the season and Acosta was averaging .704.
