CIF Central Sec: 2 left, Allen done

Here’s some record updates and highlights of top players & teams from the recent week as reported to us from CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett of Fresno. We are now in our second week of basketball updates as well. Bob has done phenomenal work on behalf of CIF Central Section schools, athletes and coaches for more than 40 years.

FOOTBALL

Senior Joseph Garcia of Strathmore rushed for 270 yards on 44 carries and scored five touchdowns on runs of 3, 8, 20, 11 & 1 yard as Spartans avenged last year’s loss in CIF D6-A state final with 49-35 win against St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo in the CIF NorCal D6-AA regional final. Garcia now has 108 touchdowns for his career and 6,027 rushing yards as Strathmore stayed unbeaten at 15-0. Teammate Alonso Acevedo also had a fine game by rushing for 100 yards on 15 carries.

Senior Gonzalo Rodriguez of Visalia Golden West rushed for 255 yards on 31 carries and scored three touchdowns on runs of 7, 1 & 40 yards in a 41-21 win over Big Bear in a Division 5-AA game. Teammate Kai Campbell rushed for 150 yards on 15 carries and scored one touchdown on a 20-yard run. Rodriguez has 5,057 yards yards & 69 touchdowns in three years of varsity play. Golden West hosts Oakland McClymonds (13-0) for CIF state title on Friday night.

It’s all over for senior Kazmeir Allen of Tulare as his career and remarkable season comes to an end after visiting Serra of San Mateo ran past Tulare 76-43 in the CIF NorCal Division 2-AA final. Allen rushed for a game-high of 347 yards on 27 carries and scored on two long touchdown runs of 91 & 79 yards to push his season total to 72, a new national high school record. His total also will stand eight TDs ahead of the previous state record. Allen also finished his career with 121 touchdowns, the second most in section history, and 6,276 rushing yards.

Junior quarterback Trent Tompkins from Central of Fresno passed for a season high of 355 yards on 17 of 33 and had three touchdowns while receiver Jacob Torrez had nine receptions for 182 yards and three touchdowns vs Folsom in a 54-35 loss that decided the CIF NorCal D1-AA title. Tompkins set four school records this season: 237 completion, 282 attempts, 3,624 yards & 40 touchdowns.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Junior Hannah Hurley of Kern Valley (Lake Isabella) scored a section high of 44 points and was 20-of-28 at the free-throw line as the Broncs edged McFarland 68-66.

Savannah Tucker of Clovis North (Fresno) scored a team high of 32 points in a 78-41 win over River Valley (Yuba City) & 25 points against Whitney (Rocklin) in a 80-59 win in the championships game of the Sasha Brown Memorial Tournament. Tucker also was chosen MVP.
