All-State Football Nominees (NorCal)

Two on the board are QB Casey Mornhinweg from Stevenson of Pebble Beach and LB Jace Krick of Oakdale. Mornhinweg is from one of the all-time best football families in the CCS. Krick, a junior, had a memorable pick six during bowl win over Sutter. Photos: Hudl.com & Joe Cortez/The Modesto Bee.

It’s time to get rolling toward selection of the 38th annual Cal-Hi Sports All-State Football Teams. This first group of players who have been placed on our board of nominees is from the CIF Central Coast Section, CIF North Coast Section, CIF Northern Section, CIF Sac-Joaquin Section plus San Francisco & Oakland. Don’t get mad if a player isn’t listed. It’s our goal not to miss anyone at the end, a second set of nominees will be posted (Gold Club) and we welcome additional nominees from parents, coaches and fans.

Note: Cal-Hi Sports All-State Football content that will be for Gold Club members include second, final list of nominees plus second team, third team overall and All-State Underclass. The free posts will be first team overall and first team small schools and medium schools. If you want to check out all of our rankings content, all of our all-state content and state record updates, you can check it out for just $9.99 to cover a three-month subscription. For info, CLICK HERE.

This post represents the first step toward selection of the annual Cal-Hi Sports All-State Football Teams and it is for us to present lists of nominees that have been put up on our virtual board.

This first list is for the CIF sections in Northern California. The next one will be for the CIF Central Section plus San Diego and L.A. City. The final one will cover the massive CIF Southern Section.

By no means are these meant to be all-inclusive lists of every possible all-state player in California and we will miss listing some top juniors and sophomores on purpose because this isn’t a recruiting list. We encourage and welcome input from all users of our site and will be releasing a second, even more complete, updated list of nominees prior to when the teams are actually chosen and released.

Please send any nomination with each athlete’s height, weight, position, year in school, significant statistics. Comparing a player not on the board yet to one who already is can be very important toward eventual selection. Limit each nomination to one page please. Send to: markjtennis@gmail.com or call (209) 608-1317. Text messages to that number are okay as well.

The format we will continue to use is to honor a 30-player overall all-state first team with 30 more on second team. Each first team player is written up. There also are 30 for medium schools (Div. III traditional state rankings division with some D2) and 30 for small schools (Div. IV and Div. V traditional state rankings divisions). We often get enough information to include second teams for all divisions as well.

Don’t assume we know all there is to know about a player on the list, either. Send us info to make sure all pertinent information is turned in and placed into our files.

With appreciation to Stockton office assistant Paul Muyskens, here is a list of those currently on our board from the CIF Central Coast, North Coast, San Francisco, Oakland, Northern & Sac-Joaquin sections:

Your missing out on Offense and Defense lineman Andrew Berrier from East Nicolaus . He is the Co MVP of the Mid Valley League and a returning two way starter. He is a returning all northern section player.

Andrew Berrier is easily one of the best lineman in the North Section. Take a look at his highlight film on hudl if you want to see a kid dominate a game. It would be a shame not to have him on this list.

How is Jalen McKenzie on this list? The guy started off at Tackle and than was moved to Center after their loss to Helix. Put that kid in a real offense and he will struggle. Have you even seen a CV offensive lineman play? They run block by deception. Or maybe he is on this list because his size and who his brother and father is.

He does have offers from Miami and UCLA. I didn’t see him this year, but Paul did and thought he was at minimum an all-state nominee. I did see him at NorCal Nike camp and looked better than most who were there that day. If he looked awful, it wouldn’t matter who is father is.

What criteria is used to compile this list? Is it by hype and popularity or by statistics ? How is it that a Kid can rush for over 2000 yards and average over 200 yards per game and not make your list? Case and point Greg Cabral Del Campo High school. I know these list are highly subjective and you do the best you can but come on man. This kid deserves his props.

Hey Joe , just checking the state leaders and with 2000 he’d be 3 rd in the section!! Max preps has no numbers on him??

It’s easier to miss someone when their coach doesn’t use MaxPreps. We do see the Sac Bee most weeks and Greg had some good games but didn’t have one that made us check the record books and hence make his name more familiar to us. He’ll be added to the second list and will be considered for every team he is eligible to make.

        Hey Mark and Jimm,
I think his coach doesn’t post stats on his players because he likes the anonymity. I personally don’t agree with this practice because of this example right here. Keep up the good work guys. I know its a thankless job and you cant please everyone. FYI Greg rushed for almost 400 yards in game 1 against Merced. He had a 70 plus yarder called back or he would have had close to 500 yards that game. Thanks again Guys!

I want to give props to my sons teammate. Jaquari Godfrey from Bishop ‘O Dowd high school. He was the defensive MVP of their league and a cal commit. His dmsrats don’t stand out because teams simply refused to throw at him. He plays the cornerback position with ease and I didn’t see him give up 1 reception this entire year. He did get hurt after the 1st game in the playoffs in a freak practice accident. Maybe that ms why he was mistakenly overlooked. He’s easily the best cornerback in Northern California and probably in the state.

Cooper Hagmaier from Bishop O’Dowd was 1st Team All League at TE and DE and has better offensive stats than Berzibs from Campolindo and the same defensive stats as teammate Jordan Jackson. Hagmaier was totally missed, he should be on your NCS list.

Looks like this list is compiled by people who have no regard for stats or are on the take. Hagmaier from O’Dowd was 1st team All League at both TE and DE and has the same Stats as DE teammate Jordan Jackson. Hagmaier should have either joined Jackson on this list or replaced him. Shame on you Cal High Sports!

We’re on the take because we missed a kid on the first run-through of a list in which we specifically asked for nominations? Wow, that’s a new one. We’ll of course add Cooper to the second list. You should know we cover the entire state of California and have very limited resources to continue to do all of the things we do (record updates, all-state, rankings in five sports, etc). Please feel free to submit more info, but do it without an attitude. With all other factors being equal (including stats), I guarantee a kid with parents who aren’t jerks is going to be selected higher over a kid with parents who are jerks.

That was a good come back, Mark

My Kid didn’t make the list from St. Marys and was a 3 year starter on O. Line. But hey.. Lots of guys to choose from.
Onward and upward. High school is over!

This list clearly doesn’t take stats into consideration or is compiled by people who are on the take. Hagmaier at BOD had better stats than teammate Jordan Jackson and played both sides of the ball. Godfrey from O’Dowd should also be on this list and is missed. Poor reporting…Shame on you!

2,851 rushing yards and he missed two games. He averaged about 300 a game in the playoffs.

We know all that stuff. He will be considered strongly for all-state overall, all-state medium schools.

When is the deadline for submissions? Your Northern Section list is missing Chico High School’s running back DJ Miller. He was D2 / EAL’s 2nd leading rusher with over 100 less carries. 9.4 YPC and 17 TDS, 1209 yards on 129 carries! Despite playing on a losing team, opposing coaches voted him EAL All-League.

Deadline is basically when we push the publish live button on the first all-state team (which will be in about two weeks). We’ll accept nominations right up until the last second. It’s only fair because don’t want to miss anyone. D.J. Will be added to the second, updated list of NorCal nominees. Thanks.

Simple emails to markjtennis@gmail.com are best. Include why certain players should be on the lists and actual teams.
