Carson Schellenberg of Reedley Immanuel stops the presses by throwing a no-hitter and then in his next start doing even better with a perfect game. This week’s three other choices have gone to players from Orinda, Huntington Beach and Oxnard. The Huntington Beach baseball player also is not from the team you might think he’s from.

Note:For purposes of this feature, we are considering the CIF Central Section to be in the north.

To nominate a player for next week, email markjtennis@gmail.com by Monday at 12 noon and be sure to include a photo that we can use (which means it’s not from the local newspaper or from another web site).

Baseball Player of the Week

Carson Schellenberg (Immanuel, Reedley) Sr.

It wasn’t just a case of Carson throwing back-to-back no-hitters last week for the Eagles. The senior flamethrower made one of the no-hitters a perfect game.

In his first game of the week, Schellenberg pitched a seven-inning no-hitter and had 18 strikeouts in Immanuel’s 11-0 romp past Monache of Porterville.

Then later on, Schellenberg went seven innings again and this time there were no walks or no errors in the no-hitter, meaning it was a perfect game. In the perfect game, Schellenberg also finished with nine strikeouts.

Megan Bower (Miramonte, Orinda) Soph.

While the Lady Mats basketball team has one of the top seniors in the nation in Sabrina Ionescu, their softball team may have one of the top sophomores in the state with this catcher.

Bower had a huge game last week in an extra-inning 14-11 loss to San Lorenzo. Against the Rebels, she was 4-for-4 with a double, triple and two home runs while driving in eight runs.

Through nine games so far, the University of Santa Clara commit was hitting .704 with four home runs and 24 runs batted in. She looks to do even better this season after hitting .672 with 41 runs batted in and 11 home runs as a freshman.

Riley Ohl (Marina, Huntington Beach) Sr.

Putting together his second straight impressive start on the mound, Ohl was oh so good when he pitched his second straight shutout last week and struck out seven during a 3-0 win over Fountain Valley.

While it wasn’t last week, we would be foolish to not mention Riley’s first shutout, which was two weeks ago when he allowed just one hit and struck out nine during a 4-0 win over a Huntington Beach team that then went to North Carolina and captured the National High School Invitational championship.

In 25 innings so far this season, Ohl had struck out 27 and he had not allowed an earned run in four straight appearances with just two earned runs allowed all season.

Sieanna Corral (Channel Islands, Oxnard) Jr.

For the second time this season, Corral drove in five runs in a game when she doubled and hit a grand slam home run during a 16-11 win last week over Hueneme of Oxnard.

Two days before that, Corral homered and drove in three runs during a 6-4 win over San Marcos of Santa Barbara and in her game before she went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and one RBI.

Entering this week for the season, Sieanna had a .641 batting average with five homers and 23 RBI.

Earlier this school year, Corral also played volleyball and basketball for the Raiders. One of her highlights for basketball was being named to the all-tournament team in the green division at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.
