No. 1 De La Salle falls in Texas on Saturday night as comeback attempt falls short, but is that enough to cause a change in next state rankings? No. 13 Mission Viejo also plays on Saturday and wins, while No. 12 Helix loses to Arizona school. Not a good day for California’s national reputation at all.

Note: Next week’s updated rankings plus one-of-a-kind analysis and breakdowns will be a post for Gold Club members only. The only free rankings content this season will be the weekend scoreboard. Here is a look at scores through Saturday, August 29. The next updated state rankings will released on Monday morning.

1. De La Salle (Concord) 0-1
Antoine Custer’s 81-yard TD run and a defensive stop gave the Spartans a chance to come back from a 26-14 deficit, but they fell short 26-21 to Trinity of Euless, Texas, on Saturday night in a nationally televised matchup. We’ll see if that enough to cause a change at the top of the state rankings, but it will put to rest any notion that this is the best DLS team its ever had unless Trinity ends up as one of the best teams in Texas history. The Spartans are still more than capable of winning another CIF Open Division state title.

2. Centennial (Corona) 1-0
Head coach Matt Logan’s club beat East High of Salt Lake City (Utah) 49-13 in its season opener. Preseason No. 7 Gardena Serra is next.

3. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 1-0
Yes, early in the game, the Braves were trailing La Mirada 8-6. Final score: 76-8.

4. Bishop Amat (La Puente) 0-1
As strong as the Lancers were supposed to be, their 24-21 loss to Mater Dei on Friday wasn’t a big surprise. The Monarchs have won big games early in the season before. For details, CLICK HERE.

5. Folsom 1-0
Beat Clayton Valley (Concord), 27-26. For details, CLICK HERE.

6. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 1-0
Did not play. Jackrabbits won their first game last week 13-12 vs. Peoria Centennial of Arizona.

7. Serra (Gardena) 1-0
Beat Lakewood 41-15. The Cavs are playing No. 2 Centennial next and will be without QB Kahlil Tate (he will have to sit after ejection vs. Lakewood).

8. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 1-0
A late grind-it-out TD drive won it for Monarchs 24-21 vs. No. 4 Bishop Amat. How high to they go up on Monday? For details, CLICK HERE.

9. Grant (Sacramento) 1-0
Defeated Burbank (Sacramento) 50-14. Next two games for Pacers will be vs. Fresno area opponents.

10. Narbonne (Harbor City) 0-0
Did not play. Gauchos’ first game will be Thursday against No 6 Long Beach Poly.

11. Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 1-0
Defeated Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 40-14. The Eagles beat a team that was highly ranked in preseason San Diego Section polls.

12. Helix (La Mesa) 0-1
Like DLS, the Highlanders opened their season Saturday vs. an out-of-state opponent, in their case Chaparral of Scottsdale, Ariz. And like DLS, they also lost, in their case 23-19. For reference, Chaparral lost in the AZ D2 state playoffs last year 24-0 to Centennial of Peoria, which is the team Long Beach Poly beat 13-12 last weekend.

13. Mission Viejo 1-0
The Diablos gave up two late scores, but impressed in a 27-14 victory on Saturday night over No. 14 Liberty of Bakersfield. This was a team they lost to in their first game last season.

14. Liberty (Bakersfield) 0-1
Lost to No. 13 Mission Viejo 27-14 on Saturday. Zach Ewing of the Bakersfield California tweeted that he thought it was a big difference that Mission was playing its second game compared to Liberty playing its first.

18. JSerra (SJ Capistrano) 1-0
Defeated Cabrillo (Long Beach) 48-13. How many losses will Trinity League teams have this year before start of head-to-head league games?

19. Del Oro (Loomis) 1-0
Defeated Pleasant Grove of Utah 41-0. Golden Eagles are playing another out-of-state foe, Punahou of Hawaii, next.

21. Alemany (Mission Hills) 1-0
Defeated Garfield (Los Angeles) 61-7.

22. Pittsburg 1-0
Defeated California (San Ramon) 28-0. This is a team that has given the Pirates a lot of trouble in the past. Not this time.

23. Oceanside 1-0
Defeated San Marcos 28-10. Solid opening win in first game for new head coach David Rodriguez.

24. Redlands East Valley (Redlands) 0-0
Did not play. First game next week vs. Chaminade of West Hills, which will be a candidate to go into next State Top 25 after winning 32-30 in first game over St. Bonaventure (Ventura) team that handed REV its only loss last season.

Looks like excuses from the Bakersfield newspaper. Mission was hardly tested in their first game.
