State Stat Stars of the Week

QB Jorge Amaya (center) passed for 739 yards in a win last week by L.A. Hawkins over West Adams. Three teammates who helped him get that total were (l-r) Jalen Hall, Quante Hayden and Greg Johnson. Another who contributed greatly with yards after the catch was WR Joseph Lewis. Photo: Courtesy Hawkins H.S.

Presented by ATHLETETRAX, this week’s best includes details from Hawkins of Los Angeles about QB Jorge Amaya’s 739 yards of passing for one game, the second best in state history and one of the best in U.S. history. Plus, it’s the first 500-yard outing in CIF Central Coast Section history for Pacifica Terra Nova’s Anthony Gordon and we have the answer whether Chaminade’s Ben Kreitenberg has set a state record for career PATs.

Thanks to Paul Muyskens, Harold Abend, Ronnie Flores and CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett for contributing items this week. This honor roll is for games played from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.

PASSING

Jorge Amaya (Hawkins, Los Angeles)
As we tweeted earlier this week, we spoke with head coach Milvon James, who is confident that his junior quarterback’s totals of 35 completions in 46 attempts for 739 yards and five touchdowns during a 46-27 win over West Adams of Los Angeles are correct. “We did have a correction after looking at the film but it was about adding rushing plays and not about the yards,” said James, who noted that Amaya’s totals were given incorrectly at 45 completions in 56 attempts to the L.A. Times. “It was basically a lot of slip screens. We did it about 12 or 13 times and our receivers just ran wild. I think we have a great group of young receivers.” Amaya’s 739 yards ranks only behind the state and L.A. City Section record of 764 set in 2000 by David Koral from Palisades of Pacific Palisades. For the Hawks’ list of top receivers in the game, check below under receiving.

Anthony Gordon (Terra Nova, Pacifica)
Completing 24 of his 30 pass attempts for 513 yards and six touchdowns during a 56-35 win over Menlo School, Gordon was named as the San Mateo County Boys Athlete of the Week by the San Jose Mercury News. According to our own Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book, Gordon also set a new CCS record with 513 yards and is the first in CCS history to reach 500 or higher. Last year, Jack Heneghan of Menlo almost hit 500 and finished with 498 in a loss to Terra Nova. The previous CCS record before that was 486 set in 1987 by Gilroy’s Jamie Jensen. Through eight games, Gordon has passed for a reported 3,076 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Nick Basile (Malibu)
He completed 29 of his 47 pass attempts for 436 yards and six touchdowns during a heartbreaking 26-24 loss to Santa Paula.

Jimmy Jacob (Trabuco Hills, Mission Viejo)
Despite his best passing performance of the season, Jacob’s 26 of 41 for 401 yards and four touchdowns was not enough to prevent a 42-35 loss on the road to San Clemente.

Blake Barnett (Santiago, Corona)
Despite hitting on 31 of 54 passes for 379 yards, it was the highly regarded Barnett’s worst game as a QB since he didn’t have any touchdowns but did have four interceptions in a 49-14 loss to Norco.

Kam Brown (Charter Oak, Covina)
He connected on 21 of 33 passes for 320 yards and four TDs (with two of the scores going to highly regarded junior Zion Echols) as Charter Oak beat West Covina 33-21. With the win, the Chargers moved into a first-place tie in the Hacienda League.

Kaymen Cureton (Los Angeles)
The sophomore QB has helped the Romans get to 8-1 under first-year coach Eric Scott and had a big game in a victory over Santee of Los Angeles. Cureton completed 10 of 18 passes for 314 yards and two TDs and he even caught a TD pass.

Jaaron Stallworth (Cosumnes Oaks, Elk Grove)
Falling one completion shy of earning a spot in the state record book, he went a perfect 9 for 9 for 205 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for two short scores during a 55-7 win over Whitney of Rocklin.

RUSHING

Ricky Cervantes (Sierra Vista, Baldwin Park)
Putting in the work to make sure the Dons would pick up their third win of the season, Cervantes rushed for 423 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries in a 47-15 win over Workman of City of Industry. His total of 423 yards also is good enough to get into the Cal-Hi Sports state record book.

LaVance Warren (McClymonds, Oakland)
Scoring half of the game’s points by himself during a 40-8 win over Skyline, the dynamic senior who just got an offer from Sacramento State ran for 378 yards and four touchdowns on 35 carries for the undefeated Warriors.

Rashaad Cooper (Kimball, Tracy)
Despite Central Catholic of Modesto picking up a 70-28 win over the Jaguars, the Raiders had a hard time slowing down this senior as he rushed for 337 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries.

Lutoviko Ahoia (St. Francis, Mountain View)
In a game that our own Harold Abend was there to see, “Ship” Ahoia surprised everyone in a fill-in role as he rushed for a school-record 333 yards and scored three touchdowns on 30 carries in a 27-21 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco.

Angel Solorza (Calvary Chapel, Santa Ana)
He rushed for 320 yards and five touchdowns on 26 carries during a 45-28 win over Sage Hill of Newport Beach.

Terrell Lee (Vista del Lago, Moreno Valley)
With TD runs of 83, 1 and 52 yards, Lee had another strong outing to lead his team past Banning 53-13. He finished with 17 carries for 308 yards. Teammate Kirtius Crosby also wasn’t nice to Banning with a 40-yard interception return and an 88-yard kickoff return.

Romello Harris (Tulare)
The junior running back continued his fine season by rushing for 283 yards on 36 carries and scored three touchdowns (runs of 3, 7 and 63 yards) but the Redskins came out on short end in a 42-21 loss to Mission Oak of Tulare.

Nyric Hinton (Fresno)
Fresno High became the first school to play football in the Central Section dating back to 1892 and last Friday night a big deal happened. Hinton rushed for 282 yards on 20 carries for a new school record and according to Central Section historian and Fresno grad Bob Barnett it’s only the eighth time a player has rushed for 200 yards in a game at the school. Hinton also scored three touchdowns on runs of 8, 22 and 19 yards as Fresno beat McLane 48-0.

Uriel Arrendondo (Caruthers)
He set a new career high by rushing for 279 yards on 29 carries and scored two touchdowns (runs of 29 and 49 yards) as Caruthers beat Orosi 35-29 in overtime.

Gil’Scott Jackson (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village)
When freshman Matt Corral wasn’t passing the ball in a 35-21 victory against Moorpark, Jackson was likely running it. The junior carried 35 times for 276 yards and four touchdowns.

Isaiah Jones (Porterville)
The junior running back did not get his third consecutive game of 300 yards as initially reported, but did end with 266 yards on 19 carries and scored three touchdowns in a 42-22 win over Delano.

Elijah Preston (St. Augustine, San Diego)
Now with over 4,200 rushing yards in his career, this junior carried 23 times for 261 yards and four touchdowns during a 62-37 win over Scripps Ranch of San Diego. Preston has been banged up this season but may be getting back to full speed just in time for the playoffs.

DeJuan Tyson (Inglewood)
The Sentinels kept their playoff hopes alive with a 40-35 win over Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates when he capped off a big night with a game-winning TD with just eight seconds left. Tyson also had 17 carries for 260 yards and three touchdowns.

Alex Camacho (Northview, Covina)
They had to be using the old Macho Camacho chants after the game Alex had when Northview topped Covina 34-6 to improve to 8-1. He rushed for 258 yards and one TD, threw a 27-yard TD pass and also came up with a pair of picks on defense.

Jacob Newman (Valley Center)
With an 84-yard TD bringing up his total significantly, Newman blasted away for 258 yards on 28 carries and scored twice as the Jaguars beat Escondido 27-13.

Isazah King (Lower Lake)
If it was homecoming night, it would have been hard to not name him the king after his performance during a 49-28 come from behind win against Kelseyville. King rushed for 253 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

Jonathan Simmons (Kennedy, Sacramento)
With all three of his touchdowns coming on runs of at least 50 yards, he finished with 248 yards on just 10 carries as the Cougars defeated Florin of Sacramento 54-41.

Sterling Salguero (Birmingham, Lake Balboa)
Since starting the season 0-5, the Patriots have won four straight and Salguero’s play has been one of the reasons it’s happened. He rushed for 243 yards on 26 carries and scored four touchdowns during a 53-20 win over Taft of Woodland Hills that clinched the West Valley League title for the fourth year in a row.

Nate Jones (Tracy)
It was the best performance of the season last Friday night for the 2014 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section 100-meter dash champ against Lincoln of Stockton. Jones carried 21 times for 241 yards and four touchdowns as the Bulldogs defeated the Trojans 42-27.

Willie Lepori (Tomales)
Tomales always has a running back with big totals and Willie is the one in that role this season. In a 36-6 victory over Calistoga, Lepori galloped for 228 yards and three TDs and went over 1,400 yards for the season, according to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

Hector Soto (Manteca)
Picking a great time for a career-best performance, Soto was handed the ball 31 times and rushed for 193 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Buffaloes past previously undefeated Sierra of Manteca 34-20.

Josh Barnard (Oceanside)
Rushing for four touchdowns and 142 yards on 14 carries, Barnard he also caught a 50-yard touchdown pass and scored all five of the touchdowns for the Pirates during a 35-6 win over La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad.

RECEIVING

Trent Irwin (Hart, Newhall)
During a 43-12 win over Saugus, our SoCal Offensive Player of the Week caught six touchdown passes for a reported state best for the season. That also is a school record as is his 284 yards. Irwin also had 13 receptions in the outing.

Joseph De La Cruz (Farmersville)
This is one week in which De La Cruz as a receiver is getting the mention instead of QB Sam Metcalf. In a 44-14 romp past Orange Cove in which Metcalf passed for 361 yards and three TDs, De La Cruz had 12 receptions for 270 yards and one of the scores. He also tied former teammate Cody Hall with 154 career receptions for first-place in the school record book.

Indiana Mcalpine (Malibu)
He was the Shark that Santa Paula had a hard time stopping but the Sharks were on the losing end of a 26-24 final score despite his 17 catches for 260 yards and three touchdowns.

Jordan Genato (Terra Nova, Pacifica)
In the same game in which teammate Anthony Gordon passed for over 500 yards and a new CCS record, Genato had the majority of those yards. The senior caught nine passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers’ 56-35 win over Menlo School.

Joseph Lewis, Greg Johnson & Quante Hayden (Hawkins, Los Angeles)
These three were running rampant mostly on slip screens in the game when Hawkins QB Jacob Anaya passed for 739 yards, the second-most in state history, in a 46-27 victory against West Adams. Lewis, a sophomore who according to head coach Milvon James already has Pac-12 offers, caught seven passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson, who earlier this season made the state record book by rushing for 368 yards on five carries against L.A. Jordan, caught 11 passes for 216 yards and one score. Hayden finished with 11 catches for 171 yards and one touchdown.

Jacob Breeland (Trabuco Hills, Mission Viejo)
With his quarterback Jimmy Jacob passing for over 400 yards, it was this senior wide receiver who was on the receiving end for more than half of those yards as he caught 14 passes for 209 yards in the 42-35 loss to San Clemente. Breeland, who did not reach the end zone in the game, is a 6-foot-5, 215-pounder who will be a tight end in college. He has committed to Oregon.

Daniel Tveretinov (Rosemont, Sacramento)
The Wolverines have clawed their way to a likely playoff spot after he caught eight passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns during a 26-20 win over Liberty Ranch of Galt.

Edson Velazquez (Loara, Anaheim)
For the first time this season, the Saxons got to experience the sounds of victory after a 27-14 win over Orange. Velazquez caught seven passes for 194 yards and one touchdown while also returning a punt 54 yards for six points.

Jaylinn Hawkins (Buena Park)
After 13 catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns from the week before, Hawkins once again caught double-digit passes on Thursday of last week when he caught 10 for 186 yards and three scores during a 42-14 win for the Coyotes over Sonora of La Habra.

DEFENSE, MULTI-PURPOSE & MORE

Ben Kreitenberg (Chaminade, West Hills)
We were asked earlier this week to check into whether Ben’s career PAT total of 237 is a new state record. He’s been a terrific kicker for the Eagles for sure, but it’s not a state record and since Chaminade isn’t going to the playoffs he ends his high school career at No. 2 on the all-time list behind the record of 244 set last year by Modesto Central Catholic’s Kenny Smart. Kreitenberg’s total will be in front of Westlake Village Westlake’s Alex Ball (232) and is obviously well in front of the 206 total from Central Catholic’s Gio Podesto from 2004 that was the record the last time we printed a book. Both Ben and Kenny, however, need to know that Folsom has a sophomore kicker this year – Tony Caldera – who is getting tons of PATs and that another sophomore – Manny Berz from Citrus Hill of Perris – already has more than 100 since he was kicking on the varsity last season as a freshman.

Hector Viramontes (Norco)
The junior QB was spectacular in sparking the Cougars when they throttled Elite 11 QB Blake Barnett and his team at Corona Santiago 49-14. Viramontes rushed for 190 yards on 19 carries and scored three TDs, including an 80-yarder. He also complete six of 13 passes for 192 yards with TD passes of 69 and 36 yards.

Derrick Cruz (La Sierra, Riverside)
Hector Viramontes wasn’t the only QB in the Inland Empire with a huge rush-pass outing last week. In La Sierra’s 42-33 triumph over previously unbeaten Norte Vista, Cruz rushed for 203 yards on 23 carries and three TDs and he completed 10 of 23 passes for 112 yards and another score. Teammate Windell Thompson iced the win for LS with an 80-yard interception return with just 29 seconds left. Norte Vista was on the verge of perhaps getting a game-winning touchdown.

Damani Cual-Davis (Jefferson, Daly City)
They might want to change his name to Dual-Davis since he’s such a solid dual-threat QB. In a 28-21 win by Jeff over El Camino of South San Francisco, Cual-Davis went 16 of 28 for 252 yards and four TDs as a passer and he rushed for 187 yards with one TD on 20 carries.

Joey Cox (Calvary Chapel, Santa Ana)
If 31 total tackles and an interception during a 35-28 win in overtime over Laguna Beach doesn’t impress you enough, Cox also caught 12 passes for 138 yards and one touchdown and also returned a kickoff 96 yards.

Khalil Tate (Serra, Gardena)
More than half of his completions went for touchdowns when he completed seven passes for 129 yards and four scores while being even more impressive rushing the football with 218 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries in a 41-28 win over Chaminade of West Hills.

Riley Vickner (Sutter)
The linebacker captain of the Huskies’ defense had 24 tackles during a 44-13 win over previously undefeated Orland.

Parker Chase (Corona del Mar, Newport Beach)
With five sacks that came in a 35-13 win over Beckman of Irvine, the returning All-State Medium Schools pick now has 17 sacks on the season, according to MaxPreps.

Chris Guillen (Christian Brothers, Sacramento)
Not only did he pass for 275 yards and three touchdowns but he also rushed for 36 yards on eight carries and averaged 37.7 yards per punt as the Falcons improved to 8-1 on the year with a 33-24 win over Casa Roble of Orangevale.

Michael Lovett III (Cabrillo, Long Beach)
Rushing for 230 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries during a 54-45 win over Wilson of Long Beach already was enough to be listed here, but Lovett also returned a kickoff 90 yards for another score and recovered a fumble.

Elias Deeb (Mater Dei, Santa Ana)
While none were longer than 26 yards, Deeb kicked four field goals to help the Monarchs defeat Santa Margarita of Rancho Santa Margarita 19-14.

Chris Williams (Laguna Creek, Elk Grove)
Scoring in three different ways during a 42-0 win over McClatchy, he caught two touchdown passes, rushed for a touchdown and returned a kickoff 76 yards for a score.

Matt Lochar (Los Alamitos)
Already with over 100 total tackles on the season, he added 19 more to that total along with a sack during a 49-13 win over Huntington Beach.

Frankie Avantino (Redding Christian)
It was 55-6 at halftime of Redding Christian’s 61-6 win over Tulelake so most of Avantino’s totals came in just one half. He finished with 199 yards rushing and three TDs and he passed for 131 yards with two more scores.

Jamonte Moore (John Swett, Crockett)
In a 36-0 win over De Anza of Richmond that pushed the Indians to 8-1 on the season, Moore had 10 tackles, two sacks and recovered a fumble.

Riley Whimpey (San Clemente)
Not only did he finish with 17 total tackles and a sack during a 42-35 win over Trabuco Hills of Mission Viejo, but he also blocked a punt that set up a score.

Alex Godinez (Natomas, Sacramento)
Named as our NorCal Special Teams Player of the Week, he kicked a 58-yard field goal in a 31-6 win over Lindhurst of Olivehurst. His field goal tied the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section record while the state record is 64 yards.

As has been customary for many years, we collect the state stat stars in support of the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book & Almanac. The book has been published seven times (the most recent, though, was 2009) and is as official as a state record book can be since no other exists. To report a State Stat Star of the Week of your own, please email details to markjtennis@gmail.com.

Note: All football state records are in the process of being added to this web site. Some of them already have been added. They will be part of our Gold Club membership. To join our Gold Club today, please CLICK HERE.

Why is there no mention of Isaiah Morrow?

Heritage HS (Menifee) Sr RB had 155yds and 5 touchdowns against crosstown rival Paloma Valley on senior night last week.

Went 60yds to the house on the first play of the game for the Patriots. Had 3 TDs in the 4th qtr!

Leading his defending CIF championship team to an undefeated season, Cali’s longest winning streak(19) and 24 straight league wins.

Would have been nice to see Justin Zapanta of Clayton Valley mentioned. The senior wingback tallied 5 touchdowns in the Ugly Eagle victory, 3 rushing and two receiving. Totaled a 115 yards rushing on 10 carries, and 106 yards receiving on 4 catches. Panda killed it.
