Only one is named from each region for offense, defense and special teams and we’re going to do our best to spread it around as much as possible. This week’s honors go to North Hills, Newport Beach, Sierra Madre, Tulare, Fremont and Sacramento.

Note: For purposes of this feature, we are considering the CIF Central Section to be in the north.

To nominate a player for next week, email markjtennis@gmail.com by Monday at 12 noon and be sure to include a photo that we can use (which means it’s not from the local newspaper or from another web site). Please feel free to call at 209-463-9050 as well both for nominations or to see if your business or small company would like to become a sponsor for this weekly content. Thanks to Stockton office assistant Paul Muyskens for contributing to these selections and writeups.

Offensive Player of the Week

Luis Dorame (Monroe, North Hills) Sr.
He’s not the biggest QB around – in fact he’s just 5-foot-8 – but Dorame’s passing arm has been heating up as the season goes on. He followed up a 412-yards and five-touchdown performance from the week before with 459 yards and three touchdown during a 27-21 win last week over Belmont of Los Angeles. Besides completing 31 of his 49 pass attempts, he also rushed for one score. Through four games, Dorame ranks among the state leaders with 1,303 yards and 11 touchdowns while rushing for 145 yards and four scores. The senior captain also has helped the Vikings start the season 4-0.

Defensive Player of the Week

Parker Chase (Corona del Mar, Newport Beach) Sr.
Someone we more than remember watching during the Sea Kings’ CIF Division III state championship season last year, Chase was a never-say-die defensive end who has continued to shine this year. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior had four sacks, 10 tackles and recovered a fumble when Corona del Mar defeated Newport Harbor of Newport Beach 28-18 for its 30th straight win. Through four games, he also has 29 tackles and eight sacks for a team that just moved up to No. 1 in the CIF D2 South bowl game rankings and is taking on Tesoro of Las Flores this week in one of Orange County’s top games.

Special Teams Player of the Week

Grant Schober (Maranatha, Pasadena) Sr.
While he is listed more as a punter on recruiting sites, it was his kicking last Friday that earned him this honor. Schober went into the game against rival La Salle of Pasadena yet to make a field goal, but in that game he went 4-for-4 on field goals, including the final one with 2:01 left that gave Maranatha a 33-23 lead and ended up being the difference in a 33-30 win. Schober also had three PATs in the win to make him 15-for-15 on PATs for the season. In addition, he’s been averaging more than 39 yards per punt so far this season.

Offensive Player of the Week

Romello Harris (Tulare Union, Tulare)
A member of our all-state sophomore team last season, Harris has had a great start to his junior year and that includes last Friday during a 49-28 win over Kingsburg. He carried the ball 24 times and rushed for 357 yards and three touchdowns for the Redskins. According to CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett, Harris was 26 yards behind school record holder Dominique Dorsey, who had 383 yards in one game in 2000. Dorsey eventually set the career state rushing record (later broken). Harris, who already has several Division I college offers including reports that he picked one up over the weekend from Duke, only needs 73 yards in his fifth game to reach 1,000 for the season.

Defensive Player of the Week

Jacob Murrieta (Kennedy, Fremont)
This 6-foot-3, 215-pound linebacker plays on both sides of the ball for the Titans, but it was on defense where he made the biggest impact in a 57-0 win over Hercules. In that game, Murrieta came through for four sacks, which was his third game already this year in which he’s been credited with that many sacks. Also in the win, he caught two passes for 63 yards and one touchdown and has now caught at least one touchdown pass in every game. On the year, he has caught just nine passes but they have gone for 209 yards and five touchdowns. Murrieta’s play also has helped Kennedy get out to a 4-0 start for the season.

Cal-Hi Sports Northern California
Special Teams Player of the Week

Dejon Glover (Natomas, Sacramento) Sr.
Not only did he play a part when the Nighthawks snapped their 32-game losing streak in their season opener, but Glover’s performance on offense, defense and special teams helped them move to 3-1 on the year after a 50-22 win last week over Highlands of North Highlands. One of Glover’s TDs against the Scots came on a 70-yard punt return, which also marked the second straight game in which he returned a punt for a score. It was a breakout performance for Glover, meanwhile, on the offensive side of the ball as he rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, he also had six tackles, a sack, and intercepted a pass. Natomas began the year with the longest active losing streak in the state and we’re glad to give the program some attention for a different reason.

Any knowledge what college Nick Capella of St. Bonaventure will commit to?

In regard to special teams Cal High’s Spenser Thompson-Meyers has something like 15 or 16 kickoffs so far this year with only one not being a touch back. Most go out of the back of the end zone.

My guess on Capella is Cal but it’s hard to tell from looking at the top three recruiting sites.
