Headlining the first of the Cal-Hi Sports all-state football teams are the best of the best among juniors and sophomores. This post is for the first team juniors and first team sophomores. This is the 35th consecutive year we’ve presented California all-state football teams.

If you want to see more lists of all-state juniors and sophomores (second and third team juniors and second team sophs), it’s for members of our Gold Club only. To see how you can sign up, CLICK HERE.

RELATED: For writeups about some of the state’s top frosh, CLICK HERE.

Note: Criteria includes being chosen already to an all-city, all-area, all-CIF section team plus team success, individual statistics, strength of competition, and personal observations (in other words someone on our staff saw that person play). College recruiting potential is a part of it (it’s more of a factor frankly with offensive linemen) but this should not be viewed as recruiting lists for the Class of 2015 or 2016.

Mater Dei ‘s Malik McMorris should be on team instead of Orange Lutheran Keisean Lucier-South. McMorris was the Trinity League Defensive MVP and had a better season than South. According to the criteria McMorris should have been named first team. It states this is not based on recruiting, but this pick is obvious it is.

Good points. For that one, we already had a nose guard type on first team (McKenzie, who is better than McMorris) so we were thinking to get more of a pass rusher DE type chosen like South. Plus, after seeing MD, thought it was better to have two on second team (McMorris and Humphries) instead of splitting them up.

Westlake’s Kevin Robledo made 20 field goals as a sophomore. In 2013 as a junior, Robledo made 11 field goals.

Just didn’t see him on all-CIFSS team for that division nor on L.A. Wave team and no nomination was sent in on him, either. If he’s that good, he’ll prove it soon or next season and good luck to him in doing that.

We’re there any Centers on 1st or 2nd team juniors? You put in a lot of work into this list, I appreciate it.

Your son was chosen for third team and almost made second team. It’s a very very good class of offensive linemen coming up statewide and only had room for five first team, five second team.

I find it interesting that DLS’ Boss Tagaloa was listed as an O-lineman, but hardly played there the last half of the year as junior Blake Ogburn took over the right tackle duties while Boss focused on defense. Also it’s surprising Antoine Custer was left off the soph list as a two way starter for DLS. Received about half or less of the carries that many of the other RB’s on this list did but put up 1,100 yards rushing and averaged 10 per carry.

I know that TeVon Rhynes only played in 2 games last year for Del Oro before a season ending injury, but he will be back for his Senior year!

We were there when he went down in game vs. Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks and it was obvious how much he meant to the team. Took them awhile to bounce back from it. If he hadn’t gotten hurt, he might have rushed for 2,000 yards or more (not to take anything away from the amazing season that Dylan Kainrath had).

Boss played offense in one of the games we saw and happened to fit best for sophomore team on offense. Custer is on the second team. We just had a couple of kids around 2,000 yards in addition to McGrew. Custer could have been higher than Preston of St. Augustine but he’s already been a star for that team two years not just one.

Malik McMorris definitely earned and deserved 1st team honors. Recruiting should have nothing to do with hard work and talent

Thought Logan Baker would rank higher. I agree that recruiting, nominations and school ranking with hard work and talent plays a big part. It should especially if your lucky enough to have them all working together for you. Of course not everyone does. But like injuries limiting stats and time played in games etc it seems the win % and game ratio on stats should be easier to figure out and not short change a player. A player, (with 1 win and 10 less games) with clearly higher stats at that point (before playoffs) than another player should not be ranked the same and definitely not lower.
