FB: Sac’s Wheeler sets state record

Sacramento WR Damen Wheeler established new single-game state record for receiving yards in a game during his team’s 48-38 win over Christian Brothers of Sacramento.

After checking the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book and the last four plus seasons since the book was published plus performances from earlier this season, it can be confirmed that senior wide receiver Damen Wheeler of Sacramento set a state record on Saturday afternoon as he caught eight passes for 380 yards and four touchdowns during the Dragons’ 48-38 win over Christian Brothers of Sacramento in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III semifinals.

Both Joe Davidson of the Sacramento Bee, who covered the game, and Sacramento High’s official stats are going with the 380-yard total.

All four of Wheeler’s touchdown catches were on plays of at least 67 yards. Wheeler also gets into the book since one of the TD passes from sophomore Caden Vogues was 99 yards in length, which ties a state record held by many.

While looking through our files, we didn’t see any above the record total in the published book of 377 set in 1996 by Ramon Nevarez from Bolsa Grande of Garden Grove in 43-23 win over La Quinta of Westminster. In that game, Nevarez had eight catches for 377 yards and four TDs.

Wheeler is the son of the former Valley High of Sacramento standout by the same name. His dad’s teams at Valley were some of the most talented the city has ever seen. One player in that era at Valley (Damen Wheeler was two years behind and not on varsity at the same time) was Rae Carruth, who played in the NFL until he was convicted of conspiring to murder his wife in 2001.
