In addition to our two players of the week, this week’s honor roll of the state’s top single-game performances includes Bakersfield Christian QB Brandon Jones with nine TD passes and Enterprise of Redding running back Izzy Matthews with 371 yards rushing.

We will lead off the State Stat Stars every week with the Northern California and Southern California Players of the Week, which were announced on Wednesday night on Time Warner Cable’s Varsity Roundup show. We will then present the stat stars each week according to performance and no longer simply alphabetical.

As has been customary for many years, we collect the state stat stars in support of the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book & Almanac. The book has been published seven times and is as official as a state record book can be since no other exists. To report a State Stat Star of the Week of your own, please email details to markjtennis@gmail.com.

Note: All football state records are in the process of being added to this web site. They will be part of our Gold Club membership. To join our Gold Club today, please CLICK HERE.

Thanks to Paul Muyskens, Harold Abend, Ronnie Flores and CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett for contributing items this week. This honor roll is for games played from Oct. 3 to Oct. 5.

Northern California Player of the Week
Malik Hutchings (Deer Valley, Antioch)
We’re going defense for the first time this season and the player is this 6-foot-4, 245-pound linebacker. Malik is a senior, but this is his very first year of playing organized football after playing mostly AAU basketball. In a 45-34 win last Friday over Vacaville, a legit team known for its running game, Hutchings was all over the field with 19 tackles, including three for loss. He also forced four fumbles and recovered two of them. He’s the younger brother of Michael Hutchings, the freshman linebacker at USC who was our Mr. Football Player of the Year last season at De La Salle. Colleges are just starting to find out about him and we’ll have a special feature about him coming up over the weekend.

Southern California Player of the Week
Donovan Lee (Chaminade, West Hills)
In one of the best games of the year, Donovan had 32 carries for 222 yards and scored five touchdowns as the Eagles held off Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks 46-43. He also caught two passes for 27 yards. Donovan was primarily a receiver last year and has switched to running back to replace graduated standout Terrell Newby. For the season, Lee has rushed for 856 yards with 11 TDs in ‘Nade’s 4-1 start (only loss by one point to Hart of Newhall).

PASSING

Jake Pruitt (Sierra, Manteca)
For the second time this season, Pruitt passed for over 400 yards in a game and this time it was nearly 500 yards as he completed 27 of his 41 pass attempts for 496 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-26 win over Sonora. He has now passed for 1,555 yards and 17 touchdowns and has led the Timberwolves to four straight wins since losing their season opener to Tracy.

Alif Grayes (Alemany, Mission Hills)
The third prolific starting QB in a row for the Warriors passed for a school record 477 yards on 22 of 39 attempts and added three touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as Alemany suffered its first loss in a 38-27 setback to Norco.

Sam Metcalf (Farmersville)
Farmersville’s 45-35 win over Lindsay produced a record night as the junior quarterback continued his hot streak by passing for 461 yards on 32 of 45 and had six touchdown passes.

Alex Lara (Lindsay)
In the same game in which Farmersville’s Sam Metcalf passed for 461 yards, Lara set a school record by passing for 436 yards. He completed 22 of 42 and had four TDs. According to CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett, a new section record for two teams was established with 10 passing touchdowns. The 901 total passing yards is the second most.

Jonathan Sturholm (Mt. Eden, Hayward)
Playing for veteran coach Paul Perenon (who now has 219 career wins and is moving up the all-time state list), the senior quarterback was 27 of 41 for 420 yards and five TDs in a 48-0 shellacking of Concord Mt. Diablo.

Brandon Jones (Bakersfield Christian, Bakersfield)
He came up just short of tying the state record for touchdown passes in a game but it had some angry people on both sides of his performance since he was still in the game let alone throwing the ball in the second half during an 83-0 win over Kennedy of Delano. Jones, who did set a new CIF Central Section record with his nine TD passes, completed 16 of his 20 pass attempts for 405 yards. Kicker Nathan DeJager of Bakersfield Christian also made all 11 PAT attempts.

Trey Tinsley (El Toro, Lake Forest)
Tinsley and favorite receiver Dominic Collins continue to put up big numbers through the air. The junior QB completed 28 of his 42 pass attempts for 386 yards and three touchdowns in the Chargers’ 39-10 win over Claremont.

Michael Wilson (Colfax)
With the ball flying through the air, the Falcons defeated Mesa Verde of Orangevale 48-19 as Wilson passed for 346 yards and seven touchdowns. Chas Reising was on the receiving end on four of Wilson’s TD passes.

Jack Heneghan (Menlo School, Atherton)
Menlo’s trip to West Oakland to play McClymonds lived up to what we would have expected: a great game between two top-level small school squads. Menlo hung on for a 47-40 win after Mack stormed back from a 40-12 deficit. Heneghan led the Knights by completing 20 of 34 passes for 343 yards and four TDs. He also rushed for a score.

Jack McInally (Brethren Christian, Huntington Beach)
He completed 14 of his 19 pass attempts for 310 yards and five touchdowns as the Warriors picked up their fourth win of the season with a 45-6 win over Riverside Christian.

Brandon Dawkins (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village)
He has had bigger numbers in other games this season but was outstanding early when allowed to throw and finished 17 of 20 pass for 303 yards and five touchdowns during the Lions’ 63-7 win over Thousand Oaks.

Gilbert Soto (Lincoln, Los Angeles)
One of the L.A. City Section’s top passers, Soto completed 13 of 18 passes for 280 yards in a 47-12 win over Santee of Los Angeles. Soto also threw six touchdown passes for the Tigers.

RECEIVING

Gaven Mann (Lindsay)
Alex Jara was looking for him early and often in Lindsay’s game against Farmersville as he caught 12 passes for 335 yards and three touchdowns but the Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season 45-35. Mann’s yardage is tied for second best in CIF Central Section history.

Dominic Collins (El Toro, Lake Forest)
He’s going to fly by his last season’s total of 82 catches for 1,013 yards and 11 touchdowns as he already has caught 72 passes for 954 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. Last week, Collins caught 12 passes for 213 yards and four touchdowns for the Chargers in their 39-10 win over Claremont.

Lucas Widmer (Sierra, Manteca)
Half of his catches ended in six points during the Timberwolves’ 45-26 win over Sonora. Widmer caught six passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns.

Bradley Clark (Ripon)
In Ripon’s 35-13 triumph over Modesto Christian that further solidified the Indians as one of NorCal’s top small school teams, Clark caught 10 passes for 151 yards. He was a first team all-Trans Valley League selection at receiver last year as a junior.

RUSHING

Izzy Matthews (Enterprise, Redding)
According to T.J. Holmes from the Redding Record Searchlight, this talented junior RB/LB set a school single game rushing record in the Hornets’ 56-48 win over Chico. Matthews rushed for 371 yards on 27 carries while also scoring a career-best four touchdowns.

Richard Doctor (Lemoore)
According to CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett, the senior running back tied a section record by scoring eight touchdowns for the Tigers in their 62-32 victory against Hanford West. He rushed for 345 yards and seven TDs on 23 carries and added another score on a 95-yard kickoff return. For the season, Doctor is among the state leaders with 21 TDs and 1,575 yards in six games.

Brandon Boyd (Gilroy)
A lot of teams had the week off, but this senior back – and the Week 5 NorCal Player of the Week — put in lots of work during the Mustangs’ 55-14 win over Watsonville. Boyd carried the ball 30 times for 315 yards and four touchdowns.

Dayton Pepperdine (Dunsmuir)
Gotta love the images of Malibu and the Shasta area mountains that Dayton’s name brings forth. In a 42-7 win by Dunsmuir of Butte Valley in a CIF Northern Section 8-man contest, Pepperdine carried the ball 28 times for 309 yards and two touchdowns as the Tigers remained undefeated on the season.

Darius Jones (Canoga Park)
He rushed for 266 yards and three touchdowns in the Hunters’ 35-7 Valley Mission League victory over Kennedy of Granada Hills.

Jamal Anderson (Sonora, La Habra)
It wasn’t mentioned if he did the dirty bird dance like the former Atlanta Falcons running back by almost the same name but he did carry 22 times for 257 yards and two scores in a 19-14 loss by Sonora to Estancia of Costa Mesa.

Cory Young (Norco)
Behind a highly-touted offensive line, Young dashed for 247 yards in the Cougars’ 38-27 upset win over state-ranked Alemany of Mission Hills. It also helped offset a huge passing performance by Alemany QB Alif Grayes.

Edgar Segura (Mendota)
The senior standout reached 100 career touchdowns after he scored three times on runs of 74, 34, and 24 yards in a 42-13 victory against Sierra of Tollhouse. Segura also had 24 carries and 244 yards.

Clayton Bowler (Holtville)
In leading the Vikings to their fourth straight win, Bowler rolled over defenders from Palo Verde Valley as if they were pins. He finished with 28 carries for 243 yards and three TDs and led the team to a 28-7 win.

David Ramirez (Van Nuys)
He lugged the leather 30 times for 235 yards and four scores in the Wolves’ 35-28 Valley Mission League win over Reseda.

Mark Parsons (El Dorado, Placentia)
With Parsons leading the way, the Golden Hawks have now won two in a row after starting 0-4. Parsons rushed for 231 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-24 road win over El Modena of Orange.

Deven Boston (Buena Park)
The Coyotes suffered their first loss of the season before their bye week and they were more than ready to make sure they wouldn’t lose again as they defeated Westminster 47-15 behind Boston, who ran for 222 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries.

Matthew Shearin (El Cajon Valley, El Cajon)
Shearin was tearin’ it up for his team in a 38-13 triumph over Orange Glen of Escondido. He had 23 carries for 220 yards and reached the end zone five times. It also was Shearin’s second 200-yard game of the season.

ALL-PURPOSE

Ty Gangi (St. Francis, La Canada)
Ty played like gangbusters to lift St. Francis past Monrovia 48-14. He accounted for a whopping seven touchdowns as St. Francis steamrolled a team that was ranked No. 1 in the DIII South Bowl Game rankings coming in. Gangi’s performance included four touchdown passes, two touchdown rushes and a touchdown reception on a trick play.

Cameron Griffin (View Park Prep, Los Angles)
One of the state’s top linebacker prospects headed to San Diego State got it done on both sides of the ball in View Park’s 32-14 victory over Morningside of Inglewood. He intercepted a fourth-down pass in the end zone late in the game and had a hand in a whopping 22 tackles, including 14 solo. On offense, Griffin scored two rushing touchdowns and also caught two more for a team trying to make some noise in the D4 South Bowl Game rankings. Teammate Clarence Jackson also had a big night, picking off three passes on defense from his free safety position.

Bobby Okereke (Foothill, Tustin)
Named the Football Athlete of the Week by OCVarsity, he rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns, caught two passes for 48 yards and had six tackles on defense in Foothill’s 28-14 win over Villa Park.

Andrew Brown (Ripon Christian)
The Knights moved into the top 10 of our D4 North rankings this week and his performance so far this season is a big reason. In a 45-14 win last week against Denair, Brown had nine carries for 209 yards and four touchdowns while also catching five passes for 156 yards and one score.

Coltin Gerhart (Vista Murrieta, Murrieta)
Doing the most of his damage running the ball, he rushed for 200 yards and four touchdowns on 12 carries but he also completed 3 of his 6 pass attempts for 62 yards and a touchdown as the Broncos defeated Crespi of Encino 42-2.

DEFENSE

Jalen Canty (St. Patrick St. Vincent, Vallejo)
Somehow we missed the big fella, and at 6-foot-8, 260-pounds that’s hard to do. One of the top basketball recruits who has already committed to Washington, Canty has been a dandy on the gridiron, and told reporters after Saturday’s 28-21 win over Pinole Valley of Pinole, that he might try to play football at Washington as well as basketball. Last week at defensive end, he only had 1.5 sacks, 10 tackles and caught a 20-yard pass as a tight end, but two weeks ago against Walnut Creek Berean Christian, he had 5.5 sacks and 12 tackles. Canty currently leads the state in sacks with a reported 16.

Chandler Ramirez (Archbishop Mitty, San Jose)
In Mitty’s 51-7 romp past Archbishop Riordan that kept the Monarchs unbeaten, Ramirez was a force with five sacks. He also now has nine for the season.

Tanner Gallion (Fall River, McArthur)
He gained co-defensive player of the week honors from the Redding Record Searchlight after he had four sacks in his team’s win over Mount Shasta.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Joey Cooper (Highland, Bakersfield)
The fine kicker from Highland tied a Central Section record by kicking five field goals of 34, 32, 49, 24, 19 yards in a 28-13 win over Mira Monte. He also has now has made 10 field goals for the season.

COACHING

Bill Gray (Terra Nova, Pacifica)
Thanks to the hard work by Horace Hinshaw of the Pacifica Tribune, who went through several archives, including yearbooks and anything else he could get his hands on at Oceana (Pacifica), a school that no longer plays football, we have a new No. 3 all-time winningest coach in the CIF Central Coast Section. The recognition couldn’t have come at a better time. The Tigers had a bye last week, but two weeks ago, in a 38-13 win at “The Pit” in Salinas, it turns out that Gray hit a magic milestone that only a handful of California high school football coaches have achieved, and that’s 250 wins. Now, after 19 years at Oceana that began in 1972 and ended in 1990, 22 years and a 4-0 record to start this season at Terra Nova, Gray has a 250-175-6 record, and earns himself a spot that will continue to grow in the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book. Benny Pierce is the CCS all-time leader with 269 wins from 1961-1994 at Saratoga. Butch Cattolico, who retired last year and is now assisting his son and Elk Grove Pleasant Grove head coach Joe Cattolico, had 266 wins from 1986-2012 at Los Gatos.
